GOUYE, Thomas.
De Backer & Sommervogel III, cols. 1640-1641; WorldCat (6 copies); not in Lust. Rare first edition of an extensive account of several scientific observations made to improve the astronomical and geographical information on regions in China and India. The work contains several reports on China and Siam, made by various Jesuits, including father Richaud who comments on the astronomy and calendar of the Siamese, and François Noël who calculated the longitude and latitude of several villages in China. Other reports concern, among others, Cassini's tables of Jupiter's satellites, Tartary at the frontier with China, a journey from the Junnam province in China to the city of Ava as it was made by some 30,000 Chinese fleeing from Tartary, and observations on a comet that had appeared in 1689. All these reports were collected and provided with commentaries by father Thomas Gouye (1650-1725). The two engraved maps depict a part of India, one showing the course of the river Ganges and the other the course of the river Ava. The engraved plate depicts the different letters and numbers of the Bengali language. With a tiny inscription (shelf mark?) on title-page. Slightly browned, title-page slightly thumbed, some occasional small spots, 1 map water stained in the margins, lower corner of page 63 torn off, but overall in good condition. Leather of the binding a bit cracked, otherwise in very good condition.

LAIRESSE, Gerard de.
1640. Bierens de Haan 2609; Kunst op schrift 137. Second edition of a popular practical manual teaching the art of drawing by the famous Dutch painter Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). The book is divided into two parts, the first part teaching young children in 12 lessons the principles of drawing based on geometry, and in the second part a more advanced course is given in 10 so-called "propositions" for professional art students, including a detailed plan for the installation of an Art Academy. Gerard de Lairesse, sometimes called the Dutch Poussin, devoted himself to teaching after he became blind in 1690. Being a classicist, his theories were mainly based on Junius's De pictura Veterum , and on Charles Dufresnoy's De arte graphica , but the practical side of his teaching, based on his own lifelong experience, gives his text books their special interest and importance. The treatise by Segner teaches how to construct lamps which were economic and efficient and also spared the artist's eye-sight. The plates extensively show how to construct such lamps as well as their oil-reservoirs. Slightly browned, with some faint, marginal foxing on only a few pages. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities with some restorations to the spine. A very good copy in attractive binding.

SIMPLICIUS of Cilicia.
Breugelmans 1640:17; Smitskamp, Philologia orientalis 322 (part 3); De Nave, Philologia Arabica 97 (part 3). A parallel Greek and Latin edition, edited by Daniel Heinsius, of Simplicius's commentaries on Epictetus's Enchiridion. The commentaries are especially valuable for the light they shed on earlier philosophers, some of whose writings have not survived. The second part provides extensive additional notes on Epictetus and Simplicius by Claudius Salamasius (1588-1653). The third and fourth part provide the parallel Greek, Latin and Arabic Tabula Cebetis and Aurea carmina Pythagoræ by Johan Elichman (ca. 1600-1639), with a preface by Salmasius. Maire's presswork and typography is excellent. With an 18th-century letterpress bookplate of "Robert" and a late 19th-century engraved bookplate of Harold George Messel. In very good condition, with only minor browning and water stains, and a couple of spots in the text. The spine with a small restoration. A very good copy of Heinsius's Simplicius, in a sumptuous binding.

LOVESICKNESS). FERRAND, JAMES [JACQUES]
Oxford: Printed by L. Lichfield, 1640. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. First published in Toulouse in 1610, then revised and reissued in Paris in 1623, this discussion of erotic melancholy enraged the Inquisition and inspired Robert Burton. Toulouse-trained physician Jacques Ferrand (b. ca. 1575) defines the symptoms, especially the mood swings from jocundity to deep melancholy, that accompany unreasonable passions, and recommends treatments to control them, from diet and rigorous exercise to bloodletting. The Inquisition took issue with Ferrand even mentioning astrology, chiromancy, and magic--even though he disparaged their claims--and with his frank discussion of sexual health. Perhaps his biggest offense, in their eyes, was presenting erotomania as a physical disorder to be treated by medical means when the Church considered it a sickness of the soul curable only by God and his ministers. Madan notes that "If Robert Burton was acquainted with the first edition of this book, as he may well have been, there can be little doubt that he has taken or imitated the general method and treatment of the subject, in his 'Anatomy of Melancholy.'" Burton certainly owned a copy of the Paris 1623 edition (N. K. Kiessling, The Library of Robert Burton, Oxford, 1988, no. 566). The translation here is by Edmund Chilmead (1610-54), a serious scholar of music and a cleric at Christ Church, Oxford, who supplemented his meager income by transcribing music, translating books, and cataloguing the collection of Greek manuscripts at the Bodleian Library.. 145 x 95 mm.
