Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino"
Acquaforte, circa 1640, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Bibliografia: Bartsch, XX, 24; Bellini 17 II/II; Massari, Tra Mito e Allegoria, p. 520, 213. Dimensioni 410x395. 410 395mm

Bernard Alsop and Thomas Fawcett, London 1640 - [6], 46 p.; 8 cm. In plain brown wrapper with "Priviledges of Parliament" in ink on spine. Signatures: [A]4-F4 G2 (4to). Quire A is unsigned, except for printer's mark "3" on [A]3. D1 is unsigned; F3 missigned E3. Title Woodcut title vignette, headpieces, and initial. First published in 1628. Cf. STC 7749. STC (2nd ed.), 7750; Thomason, E.161[1]. The names of the printers, Bernard Alsop and Thomas Fawcett, are taken from STC. This tract originally printed by Alsop and Fawcett in 1628, probably was re-issued by them before the sitting of the Short Parliament, which sat from 13 April 1640 until dismissed by King Charles in 5 May 1640. Following that dismissal, Alsop and Fawcett printed a number of tracts in support of the rights of Parliament against the efforts of the king to increase his power without that body's backing. In Very Good Condition: lacking first (blank) leaf; "18" in ink in upper right-hand corner of title page; light foxing and soiling throughout; 4-cm. tear from fore-edge of last leaf with invisible (Japanese paper?) repair of part of tear touching text--no loss of text; a few letters rubbed off on p. 46. A very scarce pro-Parliament pre-English Civil War tract.

This plate was first used in Johann Ludwig Gottfried, "Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica.", first published by Matthias Merian in 1638, and reissued in numerous later editions. The print seems also to have been published separately. Then it was included in the "Theatrum Europaeum"; was a journal on the history of the German-speaking lands by Matthäus Merian, published between 1633 and 1738 in 21 quarto volumes. Copperplate, signs of glue in the centre fold, in excellent condition. Includes a decorative cartouche, compass rose, sailing ships and sea monsters. 385 310mm [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Willem Janszoon BLAEU
A nice example of Blaeu's signature map of the North Polar Regions, with several wonderful cartouches and decorative coat of arms. Wonderful detail, both real and imaginary, throughout the map. The discoveries of the late 16th and early 17th Centuries are plainly in evidence throughout Hudson's Baffin's and Buttons Bay, along with Davis Straits. Greenland has many bays named. Spitsberg and Nova Zemla are shown, but I not in a complete fashion. 8 compass roses and 4 sailing ships. The North Pole is the center of this map which shows the coastlines of the countries in the Artic Circle. The decorative title cartouche is in the upper part of the map with cherubs and personifications of the wind and winter. In the lower right is the map legend surrounded by two Eskimos, a polar bear and a fox. A nice old color example of this highly sought after map, taken from a German edition of "Atlas Major" by Johannes Blaeu. Dimensioni 535 415mm

Willem Janszoon BLAEU
Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. This is an attractive c. 1640 map of Turkey or Asia Minor by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. It covers Turkey from the Aegean Sea east as far as the Euphrates River. Cyprus and some of the Aegean Islands are also included. The map is beautifully detailed, noting several important towns, cities, rivers, and topography. Mountains are beautifully rendered in profile. The important cities of Constantinople (Istanbul), Smyrna (Izmir) and Antioch are identified. The Ottoman Empire, at its peak, controlled the entire region during this period with Constantinople as its capital. In the middle part of the 17th century, after its period of growth, the Ottoman Empire would enter a period of gradual decline and stagnation. A beautifully illustrated sea battle in the Mediterranean depicts one of the many naval battles fought by the Ottomans. Another illustration of a sea monster is also featured in the bottom right quadrant. A beautifully engraved title banner adorns the top of the map, with a scale depicted in the bottom right quadrant. Later editions would include an illustration of a turbaned figure holding the scale. This map was issued in 1640 by Willem Janszoon Blaeu's Atlas Novus. Latin text on verso. Johannes JANSSONIUS
Amsterdam, 1640. The map shows the island divided into tribes and lots, and below the map itself appear the coats of arms of Bermuda and England and the names of the first proprietors and the number of shares assigned each. A most attractive variant on the Norwood survey map. The ‘Sea Venture’ under Sir George Somers was wrecked off Bermuda in 1609 and the surviving Englishmen divided the island into Tribes (later Parishes) and Shares, which are individually listed with their owners at the foot of the map. The map's Latin title, Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, means Summer (or Somers) Island for its first leader. Shortly afterwards the Bermudas were grante … [Click Below for Full Description]
