BLAEU WILLEM
1640. Incisione in rame, coloritura originale d'epoca, 412x502.

BLAEU WILLELM-FLORIMI MATTEO
1640. Incisione in rame, 405x513.

[Click Below for Full Description]

BAILLOU (Guillaume de)
Studio & operâ M. Iacobi Thevart Medici Parisiensis, digesti, Scholiis aliquot illustrati, & in lucem primùm editi. "De Baillou was a follower of Hippocrates in his advancement of the doctrines of 'epidemic constitutions'. Crookshank regards him as the first modern epidemiologist (...) A pupil of Fernel, de Baillou was a brillant writer and speaker. The above work includes a description of the epidemic of diphteria in Paris, 1576. Later de Baillou advocated of tracheotomy, although there is no evidence that he performed that operation (...) First description of whooping cough. Baillou called it tussis quintana". Cf. Garrison-Morton, loc. cit. … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSONIUS JOANNES.

PARKINSON, John (1567-1650)
London : Printed by Tho. Cotes. 1640. Sole Edition Folio, eng. title, title-page (1 leaf), Dedication (1 leaf, verso blank), To the Reader (1 leaf), laudatory epistles and poems (5 lls), Contents (1 leaf verso blank), Text, pps 1-1755 (with errors), Errata (1 leaf verso blank), complete. Small wormhole in upper margin of some leaves, 3Y6 and 3Z1-2 with tears mended, margins of 2 leaves of index strengthened, last leaf (errata) with a small hole affecting about 7 words and laid down, all the repairs apparently done at a very early date, indeed the wormhole in the index goes through the repair paper (the first time I have seen this), old reversed calf, morocco label, joints repaired, corners a little worn. Despite these blemishes this remains a good copy of a herbal which is difficult to find complete, let alone in good condition. The author, a London pharmacist, received the title of Royal Apothecary from James I. Later Charles I appointed him as his chief botanist ("Botanicus Regius Primarius"). He had a private garden in Long Acre (Theatrum p.609) in which he grew many rarities. Work on his herbal, which was delayed for a number of years by the success of Johnson's edition of Gerarde, was greatly helped by the unpublished notes of the French botanist, Matthias L'Obel, who had lived in North London for the last years of his life. The result was an enormous folio work containing descriptions of nearly 4,000 plants (almost 1,000 more than the 1636 Gerarde) including some twenty-eight species not previously recorded in Britain. The most important of these were the strawb … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hamond, Walter
London: Printed for Nathaniel Butter, 1640. [38]pp. Small quarto. Antique-style three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt morocco label. 19th-century armorial library bookplate on front pastedown. Closely trimmed, just touching the first "A" at the top of the titlepage and cropping the upper portion of a few running titles and catchwords. Titlepage soiled, with small ink spots affecting a few characters of text. Very good. The only edition of this rare utopian work describing the island of Madagascar and its inhabitants. The author, Walter Hamond (d. 1648) had by his own account traveled several times to Madagascar in the service of the East India Company, once "resident there Foure Moneths together." During the 1630s, as King Charles I was advised that Madagascar would be an ideal location for English traders bound for India and the Far East to refresh and repair their ships, Hamond composed A PARADOX..., encouraging further use of the island for colonization and trade. Describing the land of Madagascar in Edenic terms, Hamond begins his characterization of its inhabitants by referring to them as "a sluggish and slothfull people." "If any where," he writes, "the Proverbe, Terra bona, gens male, may here be applied" (A4v). He swiftly recasts them, however, as an innocent and virtuous race, whose "Nakednesse, Poverty, and Simplicity" demonstrate a happy, prelapsarian state instead of one of wretchedness or misery: "Now for Pride [of clothing and appearance], such is the Happinesse of these people, that they know not what it meanes, here is no man that respectech anothe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Castelli, Pietro.
Basel, Franz Perna, 1640. 4to. Engraved t. p., (6), 51 (1) pp. Written space ruled throughout. Marbled boards. Early botanical study of the Balsam of Mecca (Balm of Gilead), a resinous gum of the tree Commiphora opobalsamum, native to southern Arabia. The resin was valued for use in medicine and perfume in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire; thus Pliny the Elder mentions it as one of the ingredients of the "Royal Perfume" of the Parthians in his "Naturalis Historia". - One of several editions published the same year; Perna himself produced another version without his imprint on the title page. "Concerns controversy with Antonio Manfredi and Vincenzio Panulio" (Krivatsy). - Born and educated at Rome, the surgeon and botanist Pietro Castelli (1574-1662) moved to Messina in 1634. Here, he laid out the botanical gardens, where he cultivated many exotic medicinal plants. - Heavy brownstaining throughout, still a good copy of this rare work. VD 17, 1:062780A. Cf. Krivatsy 2252.
