Gauden, John (author). Print (anonymous).
c1640-1660., [London:] 1640 - Beautiful double-page engraving, mounted on larger plain leaf. Minor stains to outer margin, overall, a very nice piece. Suitable for framing. Citations: BM 1872, 0511.1289. Believed to be from Gauden?s Suspiria. Our print matches that in the British Museum, though the text ?place figure at page 1? is lacking, possibly making this an earlier or later edition than the BM shown, all other points match, that text could be trimmed from this print as well.A cedar tree represnting the traditional episcopal church, inscribed on the truck ?The Church Catholick? with two smaller shoots from the trunk labelled ?Presbytery and ?Independency? Lettered with various inscriptions of churches.?I would call particular attention to the elaborate plate entitled ?The Goodly Cedar of Apostolick and Catholick Episcopacy, compared with the modern Shoots and Slips of divided Novelties in the Church? Gauden was clearly very proud of this plate, which, in his Funeral Sermon on Bishop Browning, he describes as a ?familiar and plain emblem.? [- The Academy Vol.XXIII, 1883].
