Howard (sans indicia).    Searches of COPAC, WorldCat, and the NUC show only one recorded copy in an American library, being the one mentioned above at Princeton University.

"Guicciardini wrote the first history of all Italy within the larger context of the European system of states and thus demonstrated the synchronistic interdependence of political events all over the continent...Bodin and Montaigne were early among Guicciardini's fervent admirers" (P.M.M., 85). Michel-Michel, IV, 101. Italiano

Ovid
London: Printed by J.L. for Andrew Hebb, 1640. Fourth edition of the Sandys translation. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Ovid, additional engraved title-page by Salamon Savery after Francisco Clein, and 15 engraved plates. Folio. Penned on the Banks of the James River, Virginia, 1626. Sandys' translation of the Metamorphosis is of special note as being the first major poetic production to come from American soil. Sandys became Treasurer of the Virginia Company in 1621 and sailed to America with the Governor, Sir Francis Wyatt. Before leaving, he had started the translation, but it was on the banks the James River that he finally finished it in 1626, dedicating it to Charles I. According to Kunitz and Haycraft, "he seems to have been of rather a quarrelsome disposition, and after many differences with his fellow members and with his neighbors he returned to England for good in 1631." His Ovid remained a very popular translation for over a century after his time, and greatly admired by Pope. This was the last lifetime edition, and also contains the first book of his translation of Virgil's Aeneid. Sandys (pronounced 'Sands') died in 1644. A particularly attractive copy, bearing an early ownership signature ("Jo: Rawling"?) on the engraved title, dated 1654. STC 18968. Bound in full early twentieth-century red crushed levant morocco gilt, skillfully rebacked with the original spine laid down, by Stern & Dess, circa 1920. Portrait and engraved title slightly waterstained, the latter with one small closed tear repaired, else fine, in a brown cloth morocco-backed slipcase.

BLAEU, Johannes & BLAEU, Willem
Johannes Blaeu, Amsterdam - Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 15" x 19.5" This incredible map by Willem and Johannes Blaeu dates to circa 1640. Featuring the famous French wine making region of Champagne, the map labels numerous villages, towns, rivers, and important cities including Chalons, Reims, Vitry-le-Francois and Sainte Menehould. Mountains and forests are beautifully rendered in profile. Decorative title and scale cartouches in the bottom corners feature cherubs. The title cartouche also includes a coat of arms. World famous for its spectacular sparkling wines of the same name, the region of Champagne was historically bound by the bishopric of Liege and Luxembourg in the north and Burgundy in the south. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the centerfold. Minor foxing. Original plate mark is visible. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prolific Dutch mapmaker who started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. This series was published by his son Johannes (c. 1599-1673), who took over the business upon his father's death. This is a beautiful example of his work.t.
