BERTEREAU, Martine de, Baroness de Beausoleil.
1640. 8vo, pp. [xiv], [ii] blank with engraved armourial coat of arms on verso, 171, [4], Privilege du Roi (dated April 20th, 1640), [1] blank; pp. 103-9 inserted folding astrological charts; title-page somewhat browned with dampstain along gutter and which is evident throughout, though varying in prominence, with some further occasional dampstaining to upper margins, browned throughout due to paper quality, a few headlines shaved close but without significant loss; with a small number of contemporary annotations in brown ink on the margins of a couple of leaves; First edition of this rare and little known early work by Martine Bertereau, Baroness of Beausoleil (fl. 1600-1630), considered to be the first female geologist. Little is known about the early life of the baroness de Beausoleil. Born in around 1590, Martine de Bertereau came from a noble family, though her exact place of birth is uncertain. She clearly received a quality humanist education however, and in 1601 married Jean du Châtelet, Baron de Beausoleil and Auffembach. Du Châtelet was a Belgian metallurgist, alchemist, and prospector, and inspector of mines of the German empire, and for some fifteen years they travelled together across both northern and southern Europe visiting mines, even venturing as far as South America. His alchemical experiments engaged upon during a prospecting trip to Brittany in 1628 prompted his arrest on charges of sorcery. He was released after a short term in prison, but his apparatus was destroyed. Between 1630 and 1634 they were commissioned by the superintendent of mines, to surve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bartolomeo Coriolano (Bologna ca. 1599 - Bologna ca. 1676)
Rhen. In. Barth Coriolanus Eques sculpsit e for. bon", in basso a sinistra "MDCXXXX".

Bellissima prova. Ex collezione H. Fliescher (Lugt 1362b). "Etching and engraving, circa 1640, no signature. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""bunch of grapes"", with margins, vertically fold of paper, otherwise in excellent condition. The work depicts the etching by Ribera, in respect of which is exactly a copy, as evidenced by the fact that in the cartouche in the lower left corner are retained the author's name and the date 1628. The plate reproduce a painting in the same direction that Ribera created in 1626 for the merchant and collector Gaspar de Roomer, currently housed in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. Likely that this work may ascribed to the publisher and print dealer Frans van den Wyngaerde (1614-1679). Beautiful proof. Ex collection H. Fliescher (Lugt 1362b)." Giovanni Andrea Sirani (Bologna 1610 -1670)
Etching, 1640 circa, signed on lower centre plate. Magnificent work printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, uncommon wide margins and signs of central fold, otherwise in excellent condition. A very rare work, invented by the Bolognese artist himself. Giovanni Andrea Sirani started working in the workshop of Giacomo Cavedone and afterwards he went to Guido Reni's, becoming his most faithful pupil and the heir of the majority of his drawings. Sirani was the meekest among Guido's pupils, who often were often very greedy and tried to make out some money on their master by selling minor works that were passed off as originals. Showing his skills as a drawer, Sirani gained Reni's favour who often … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAIRESSE, Gerard de.
First and only edition of a set of plates illustrating seven paintings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711) in the council room of the former Court of Justice of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland (now called the Lairesse room) in the Binnenhof in The Hague. The Court commissioned the paintings in 1684 and they were completed by 1688. They depict Aeneas carrying his father Anchises, an allegorical figure of Justice and five scenes from ancient Roman history, each representing a different virtue: Pompei (prudence), Scipio (moderation), Horatius Cocles (courage), Scipio again (steadfastness) and Papyrius (clemency). The printed image of each plate measures about 40 x 28 cm. In three cases the painting fills the plate; the other four paintings, being more or less square (about 23 x 23 cm to 29 x 29 cm in the plates), are depicted within the architectural context. Binding used. A very good copy.Timmer, Gerard Lairesse (1942), p. 83, nr. 26; cf. MACHIAVELLI, NICCOLÒ
London: R. Bishop for William Hils & Daniel Pakeman, 1640. First edition in English of one of the great books of the Renaissance and a classic of political philosophy. Machiavelli, long a diplomat for the Florentine Republic, was personally acquainted with many of the great leaders of the Renaissance including Lorenzo de Medici (the dedicatee of Il Principe), Louis XII of France, Emperor Maximilian, Catherine Sforza, and Piero Soderini. In 1502 he was sent as the Florentine envoy to the court of Cesare Borgia, duke of Valentinois. In Borgia he found an audacious and strong willed leader capable of deception and violence to achieve his ends, yet a man who appeared at all times both controlled and diplomatically prudent. Borgia provided the model for Machiavelli’s ideal prince, Valentino. His book addressed the problem of the unification of a self-reliant Italy. “It was Machiavelli’s intense preoccupation with this problem– what a state is and how to found one in existing circumstances– which caused the many riddles of his speculative writings He was by no means indifferent to private virtue but in the realm of politics he postponed morals to political expediency” (Britannica 11th ed.). “The Prince is far more than a book of directions to any one of the many Italian princelings. Machiavelli founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind. Politics was a science to be divorced entirely from ethics, and nothing must stand in the way of its machinery. Many of the remedies he proposed for the rescue of Italy were eventually applied. His concept of the qualities dem … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Acquaforte, 1635 - 1640 ca, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra, 'GIO BENEDETTO Castiglione GENOVESE'. Etching, 1635 - 1640 ca, signed at lower left: 'GIO BENEDETTO Castiglione GENOVESE'. Second state, of four, with a black line, at the top in the sky, mesauring about 1 cm. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to platemark, very good condition. Depicted is a scene from the story of Jacob, in the book of Genesis (XXXI, 33 -35). After fleeing Laban's house in the middle of the night, Jacob and his wives, Rachel and Leah, are overtaken by Laban, who searches for the household idols stolen by Rachel in an attempt to protect Jacob from another twenty years of labor under her father's rule. This is one of Blaeu's largest atlas maps, printed on two joined sheets. Published approx. 1640. Two magnificent cartouches, one of the Holy Roman Emperor and the Ottoman Sultan, representing the long stuggle between the two powers for control of the region, the other, around the scale, has allegorical figures of the various tributaries of the river.
