[Click Below for Full Description]

New York 1640 New York / New Amsterdam Manuscripts Signed Two separate and unique manuscript documents signed, one page each, penned on recto and verso of the same leaf, 9.75" x 8.25". Dated March 22, 1640. Fort Amsterdam. Light handling marks, expected folds. Strong contrasting ink and sigantures. Two extremely early New York documents autographed by four of the first Dutch settlers of New Netherlands. The documents, which are back to back on the same sheet of paper, are signed by "Hamanus A. Booghardii", "Wybrant Pietersen", "Ulrich Lupoltt" (two times) and "Cornelis van Tienhoven" (two times). The first document is a Power of Attorney, issued in the court of Cornelius van Tienhoven. It acknowledges that Harman Mijndertsz van Bogaert (aka Herman van Bogart) appointed Care! Looten to travel to Amsterdam to collect money owed to Bogaert from the West India Company. Looten could withhold his expenses. The document is written in Dutch, and translates as: "Before me, Cornelis van Tienhoven, secretary of New Netherland, in the presence of the undersigned witnesses, appeared Harman Myndertsen van de Bogaert, surgeon, who appoints and empowers, as he does hereby, Mr. Care! Looten, 337 merchant residing in the city of Amsterdam, to collect in his, the principal's, name from the honorable directors of the West India Company chamber of Amsterdam, all such wages and board money as the principal has earned from the 21st of March 1630, when he sailed from the Texel on the ship De Eendracht, Jan Brouwer, skipper, arriving on the 24th of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rara. Etching, circa 1640, unsigned. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with narrow margins, small wormholes perfectly restored at the bottom, otherwise in excellent condition. The works is a counterpart copy of rare etching by Ribera, in the example of the second state, bearing the initials of the engraver, publisher and print dealer Flemish Frans van den Wyngaerde (1614-1679). The print shows a man suffering from Alzheimer's Reclinghausen (neuro fibromatosis multiple) which is manifested by the appearance of large benign tumors. Possible that is made for a planned, but never completed, a manual for beginners artists, a sort of compendium for desig … [Click Below for Full Description]

STCN 036718416; cf. Knuttel 5202 & 5205b; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 242 (other editions). Early edition of the Dutch translation of a provisional agreement made between the Dutch States General and the Portuguese ambassador Francisco de Zousa Continho on the jurisdiction and territory of Fort Galle in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), one of the most important outposts both strategically and as a trading centre. The Dutch had captured it from the Portuguese in 1640 and they had been fighting in the region since that time. The treaty notes the losses and battles caused by the dispute between the two powers and the demands made by the Dutch government to secure their position in the East Indies. This includes their demand for a yearly supply of cinnamon, through which the Portuguese are to pay off their debt, and restitution by both parties for the losses they caused one another. The parties agree to honor the treaty and not trespass on each other's rights and territories. In very good condition.

Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked in period style, raised bands, blind ornaments and lettering piece to spine, hinges and corners mended. Some minor nicks and scuffs to boards, small stain to front board, light rubbing to board edges. Light toning to text, light edgewear to preliminaries, light browning, foxing and soiling to title page. A nice copy. * Covers regnal years 1 to 22 of Edward IV. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the Year Books. They are the first examples of common-law court reporting and crucial primary sources for our knowledge of medieval common law. They also provide a richly detailed portrait of contemporary English life, customs and manners. Though it is not known when the first manuscript volumes were compiled, it is clear that cases can be found to date from the 1270's and the series continues to 1535. Printed editions of the Year Books were first issued by William de Machlinia between 1481 and 1482. The present volume is from the so-called "quarto edition." These volumes were issued separately with various dates and impressions between … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Binding / Manuscript Fragment]. Francesco Antonio Glianes
Rome: Typis Manelphi Manelphii, 1640. Second edition. Very good. 12mo, contemporary (Bohemian?) binding utilizing manuscript fragment (13th-century?) over card stock boards, yapp edges, evidence of four leather ties (one extant). Paginated: [22], 599, [1], [35], [1] pp. Arms of Cardinal Francesco Barberini on title-page in red and black. Spine title and shelf-mark in early MS. Spine somewhat soiled, some light wear. Highly curious example of a recycled manuscript leaf used for binding, the fragment being from the late 13th- or early 14th-century; although the localization of the MS is uncertain, the text is the Mass Proper readings and responses from both the third Sunday after Epiphany: Gospel of Matthew 8:1-13, followed by the Offertory of Psalms 117:16-17. Curiously these are followed by the "secreta" (sic) of the third Mass of Christmas Day. "Oblata, Domine, munera sanctifica: nosque a peccatorum nostrorum maculis emunda," followed by the Post-Communion prayer: "Augeatur in nobis, quaesumus, Domine, Tuae virtutis operatio."The provenance is intriguing: not only is the binding of a type that was particularly favored in the Low Countries and Germany, but there is an illegible contemporary inscription on fol. +4v in Dutch or German, recognizable as such by the trema or umlaut on the final word. There is a slightly later inscription on title-page "Loci Capucinorum Goritiae" i.e. the Capuchin Convent in Gorizia, a Slovenian city that was effectively annexed by Italy following fierce ethnic and political turmoil during WWII. A number of sixteenth-century books from this lib … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carlo RIDOLFI (Lonigo 1594 - Venezia 1658)
1640. Acquaforte, monogrammata in lastra in basso a destra CRF. Straordinario esemplare. "Etching, monogrammed on plate at lower right CRF. Magnificent proof, with good contrast and very sharp details, on contemporary laid paper, no watermark, trimmed at the platemark, in excellent conditions. This print derives from a theme by Simone Cantarini, as proven by the inscription at the bottom of the plate bearing the words ""SCP exe."" This etching is unknown to Bartsch, while Bellini places it among the works d'apres Cantarini. De Vesme, instead, ascribes it to Ridolfi, interpreting the inscription as ""Simone Cantarini pinxit/Carolus Ridolfi Fecit"". Exceptional example." Bellini pag. 165, De Vesme pag. 17.

Etching, signed on plate at lower right on white margin. Example in the only known state. Beautiful proof, on contemporary laid paper, no watermark, irregularly trimmed inside the platemark, small repaired area at upper right margin, in very good conditions. Carter, John
1640. Jus Divinum or Jus Divinum Regum? Carter, John. Vindiciae Decimarum. Of Tithes, A Plea for the Ius Divinum. Drawne from the Text. London: T. Cotes, 1640. (iv), 56 pp. First leaf blank. Quarto (7" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt title to spine, endpapers added. Title page printed in red and black within typographical border. Moderate toning occasional light soiling or staining to margins, faint early pen doodle to foot of final page. An appealing copy. * Only edition. Ostensibly an academic study of tithes, this is a response to the opening phase of the intense conflict between Charles I and the Church of Scotland that would help push England into its civil war. Charles wanted to bring the Scottish church under state control and align its practices and creed with those of the Church of England. In 1638 Charles's opponents, or Covenanters, who drawn mostly from the Scottish nobility and clergy, declared their commitment to keep the church away from state control. The notion of tithes was a central point; the Covenanters argued for Jus Divinum, a belief that tithes are paid to the church. Charles believed in Jus Divinum Regum, which directed tithes to a state church through a monarch. OCLC and the ESTC locate no copies in North American law libraries. JANSSONIUS JOANNES
Copper engraving, hand color, mm 377x488. A classic map of Friuli. General good condition, some defects at centerfold, paper oxidation. Johannes Janssonius (1588 - 1664) was born in Arnhem, Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married the daughter of Hondius. In 1616 Jansson produced his first maps influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time, Jansson's name also begins to appear on Hondius reissues of notable Mercator/Hondius atlases.

Giovanni Andrea Sirani (Bologna 1610 -1670)
Etching, 1640 circa, signed on lower centre plate. Magnificent work printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, uncommon wide margins and signs of central fold, otherwise in excellent condition. A very rare work, invented by the Bolognese artist himself. Giovanni Andrea Sirani started working in the workshop of Giacomo Cavedone and afterwards he went to Guido Reni's, becoming his most faithful pupil and the heir of the majority of his drawings. Sirani was the meekest among Guido's pupils, who often were often very greedy and tried to make out some money on their master by selling minor works that were passed off as originals. Bellissima prova. Ex collezione H. Fliescher (Lugt 1362b). "Etching and engraving, circa 1640, no signature. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""bunch of grapes"", with margins, vertically fold of paper, otherwise in excellent condition. Harmensz van Rijn detto REMBRANDT (Leida 1606 - Amsterdam 1669)
Acquaforte e puntasecca, datata e firmata in lastra in basso a destra "Rembrandt f. 1640". Etching and drypoint, signed and dated at lower left "Rembrandt f. 1640". Example of second state of two. with additional shading in thebackground, and on neck and shoulder of St. John.
