Legatura coeva alle armi in piena pelle [armi di Chrétien-François de Lamoignon de Basville (1735-1789), magistrato e statista francese]; dorso a 6 nervi con titoli e monogrammi in oro agli scomparti; armi al centro dei due piatti inquadrati da triplice filetto dorato. Mancanze di pelle alla legatura (soprattutto in corrispondenza della cerniera anteriore ma con piatti ancora ben saldi, cuffie e punte). Sporadiche arrossature/fioriture, peraltro esemplare ben conservato. John Selden (1584-1654), definito da Ugo Grozio la "gloria dell'Inghilterra", è ritenuto uno dei più originali e influenti intellettuali del Seicento inglese. Le sue posizioni sulla condizione ebraica, la difesa della libertà di stampa e l'elaborazione di un sistema di diritto naturale incardinato sulle leggi ebraiche, gli procurarono inimicizie politiche, l'avversione della chiesa anglicana e soprattutto numerose incarcerazioni. Quest'opera è ritenuta di capitale importanza nell'ambito delle pubblicazioni seicentesche dedicate al giusnaturalismo e alla tradizione ebraica. Isla de los Estados (Staten Island) is also shown. The map features two compass roses and decorative cartouches featuring natives and wildlife (penguins). Description: Source unknown, to be determined. State: Second state.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Johannes Janssonius'. Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson (1588-1664) was born in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk. Engraving with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid paper. Anonymous. Very good, given age. Not in Brunet, nor in Bibliotheca Belgica. Thomas a Kempis (1379-1471) was a religious author. Member of the Brethren of the Common Life at Deventer. He joined the Windesheim Congregation (Augustinian Canons Regular) at Agnietenberg monastery, where he remained almost continually for over 70 years.

Artist: Merian Matthäus ca ; issued in: Schwalbach; date: ca1640 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit:; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 10 x 34; - description: Total view of Homburg; - vita of the artist: Matthäus Merian (1593 ? 1650) , born in Basel, learned the art of copperplate engraving in Zurich and subsequently worked and studied in Strasbourg, Nancy, and Paris, before returning to Basel in 1615. The following year he moved to Frankfurt, Germany where he worked for the publisher Johann Theodor de Bry. He married his daughter, Maria Magdalena 1617. In 1620 they moved back to Basel, only to return three years later to Frankfurt, where Merian took over the publishing house of his father-in-law after de Bry's death in 1623. In 1626 he became a citizen of Frankfurt and could henceforth work as an independent publisher. He is the father of Maria Sibylla Merian, who later published her the famous and wellknown studies of flowers, insects and butterflies.

It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. The design features three large shells, two putti and a garland around a central title shield. Etching/engraving, hand colored on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: No. 142 from a series of figure studies, published by Frederik Bloemaert c. 1640. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Frederik Bloemaert' after 'Abraham Bloemaert'. Made by 'Frederik Bloemaert' after 'Abraham Bloemaert'. Frederik Bloemaert (Utrecht ca. 1614-1690) was a Dutch printmaker and draftsman. Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) was a Dutch painter and etcher/engraver. He was one of the 'Haarlem Mannerists', but shifted towards a more Baroque style around 1600. Condition: Good, given age. A few minor crinkles. Some tiny spots, mainly in the margins. Irregular edges as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. In-12, plein maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs orné de compartiments garnis d'un fer au "Dauphin couronné", plats ornés d'un triple filet d'encadrement, chiffre couronné aux angles encadré de lauriers, grandes armes du Dauphin dorées au centre, tranches dorées, roulette sur les coupes et les chasses (reliure de l'époque). Belle reliure aux grandes armes et au chiffre couronné de Louis de France, le "Grand Dauphin" (1661-1711), fils aîné de Louis XIV et de Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche (O.H.R., pl. 2522, fer 6). Le Grand Dauphin vécut quarante-neuf ans dans l'ombre du Roi Soleil, attendant un trône auquel il n'accéda jamais. En 1711, quatre ans avant son père, il mourait dans son somptueux domaine de Meudon. Seul enfant légitime de Louis XIV à survivre, sur lui reposait tout l'édifice politique construit patiemment par le roi. Cet exemplaire a figuré à l'exposition 'Trésors du Grand Siècle: Louis XIV', tenue au château de Nyon en 1957, sous le n° 510.

Diese Karte war nicht für einen der Standard Atlanten vorgesehen und wurde einzeln verkauft. - Bugfalte und mit Japanpapier hinterlegt, etwas knitterfaltig um die Mittelfalte, Einriß im unteren Rand gerade in die Karte reichend hinterlegt. Gute Erhaltung. - Nice mid 17th century copper engraved map of the area around Nuremberg from J. Janssonius. With two beautiful cartouches, a small plan of Nuremberg with caption. Rare separate issued sheet without the text on verso. - Centrefold backed with Japan paper, some crease around centrefold, one tear in lower margin just affecting the image backed. Good conditions.

L'isola di Wight, che occupa tutta la metà inferiore del foglio, presenta in alto 5 stemmi, di cui l'ultimo è vuoto. Incisione su rame, bella coloritura d'epoca, testo latino al verso, qualche lieve fioritura, nel complesso in ottimo stato di conservazione. Three maps on one sheet: Anglesey, Isle of Man and Isle of Wight, published by Janssonius. Two figurative cartouches each, compass roses, sailing ships, the Isle of Wight with additional 5 coats of arms. Ortelius, engraved by Pieter van den Keere, from Atlas Novus, Amsterdam, c1640. 1st state.- copper engraved map; pate size 39,5 x 51 cm. evenly browned paper; some foxing and rust spots; some slight off-set; fold as issued; add. creases; edges frayed; split c'fold top and lower but not affecting image; on verso: rep. to lower split with old paper; o/w vg cond.- Jansson's historical map of Great Britain after Ortelius' similar map from the Parergon (see different entry). The differences are: no stippling in the sea (one of Ortelius' trademarks); only one cartouche (supported by one ancient British woman and man); imprint of Jansson (Amstelodami apud Ioannem Ianssonium) and Keere (Petrus Kaerius Caelavit); diffrent ships and fish. The map is from one of the French editions which were published in 1642, '44, '46, '47 and '49. French text on verso, ending in 'Clement'.- Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664) was a Dutch publisher of maps, globes, charts and atlases. He founded his business in 1612, the same year he married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius and Colette van den Keere. When his father-in-law died in the same year, Janssonius helped his widowed mother-in-law to continue the publication of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. After her death in 1629, he completely revised the atlas with his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius which from 1638 became known as Atlas Novus. Edition Originale imprimée à Grenoble et dédiée au Dauphin, de cet ouvrage de controverse du jésuite Alexandre Fichet (1589-1661), natif du Petit-Bornand (Haute-Savoie) et dont la verve infatigable lui valut d'être l'un des prédicateurs les plus renommés de son temps. L'ouvrage est dirigé contre le ministre protestant dauphinois David Eustache (1595-1659). Une deuxième partie est une réfutation de l'ouvrage du magistrat dauphinois Marc de Vulson intitulé "De la Puissance du Pape" (1635). Mouillures angulaires aux premiers feuillets.
