Parker, Henry
1640. An Important Statement Concerning an Act that Pitted Parliament against Charles I [Parker, Henry (1604-1652)]. The Case of Shipmony Briefly Discoursed, According to the Grounds of Law, Policy, And Conscience. And Most Humbly Presented to the Censure and Correction of the High Court of Parliament, Nov. 3. 1640. [London: Printed by Thomas Harper], 1640. [ii], 49, [1] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent textured paper boards, gilt title to front board. Light browning and faint dampstaining to text, title page printed off-center with some loss to text. $450. * Only edition, first issue. Ship money, a tax levied on coastal regions to pay for naval protection, was one of a handful of taxes that English monarchs could levy without parliamentary approval. Believing King Charles I was abusing this power, Parliament passed the Ship Money Act 1640 to abolish the tax. The conflict that resulted from this act was one of the causes of the Civil War. A barrister, Parker was "the most influential writer to defend the parliamentary cause in the 1640s" (Goldsworthy). His pro-Parliament review of the case is considered to be one of the first significant political statements of the 1640s. He published his works anonymously, some under the pseudonym "Observator." According to the STC, there are two issues of this work; the second has "policie" rather than "policy" in the title. Goldsworthy, The Sovereignty of Parliament 97. BESLER, Basilius
Eichstatt: , 1640. Copperplate engraving. Later hand-colour. Plate mark size: 485 × 400 mm. Mounted size: 730 x 640 mm. Very good condition. A wonderful life size botanical print from Basilius Besler's epic work; the 'Hortus Eystettensis'. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary, commissioned in 1600 by Konrad, the Bishop Prince of Eichstatt, to engrave the contents of his extensive gardens. The resulting 374 plates (illustrating more than a thousand flowers), were arranged according to the yearly seasons. When the book was first published in 1613, it was the largest book ever printed, and the scarce, coloured versions of the prints sold for ten times the price of those sold in black and white. Besler worked on the drawings for almost sixteen years, supervising a team of at least six engravers. The impressive size and scope of these elaborately produced copper engravings certainly make the Hortus Eystettensis one of the most ambitious and stunning botanical publications in the entire history of botanical illustration.

Manoscritto - STORICO

Blaeu Willem Janszoon (1571 - 1638) Amsterdam
Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1640. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 36 x 48; - description: Map of Chile; - vita of the artist: Joan Guilliemus Blaeu was the eldest son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), and was probably born in Alkmaar in the province of Noord-Holland in the final years of the 16th century. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for several volumes created enormous work for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that over 80 men must have been employed full-time in the Blaeu printing house in Bloemgracht, not including engravers who worked elsewhere, with over 15 printing … [Click Below for Full Description]
