It became the standard for English apothecaries for 100 years. He sought information and specimens from correspondents throughout the world and created a work based on observation and data collection rather than information based on older works. It was the first work to describe 33 native plants, 13 of which grew near Parkinson's Middlesex home. Some of these plants, such as the Welsh poppy, the Strawberry Tree and the Lady's Slipper, were very common but had gone unnoticed or at least unrecorded. William Marshall's elaborate frontispiece for Theatrum Botanicum is divided into three registers. At the top and bottom, allegorical figures appear against a backdrop of fantastical garden imagery. The rhinoceros in the upper left may refer to the coat of arms of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries founded by John Parkinson in 1617. Parkinson, whose portrait appears at the bottom, also served on the Court of Assistants, the Society's gov … [Click Below for Full Description]

Machiavelli, Niccolo
London: R. Bishop for Wil: Hils, 1640. Rare first edition in English of Machiavelli's Prince, a seminal work in the foundation of modern political theory, and the great classic of political science. 12 mo, bound in full contemporary calf. From the library of William Constable, Baronet with his bookplate, in near fine condition. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example, most rare and desirable in this condition. "Machiavelli founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind... Politics was a science to be divorced entirely from ethics, and nothing must stand in the way of its machinery,...'for when a decision to be taken depends on the survival of one's country, no consideration may be given to justice or injustice, to kindness or cruelty, to actions being laudable or ignominious... That course must be followed which will save its existence and preserve its freedom" (PMM 63). The first manuscript of The Prince arrived in England by way of Thomas Cromwell almost 100 years before this 1640 publication in English, and the influence of "this little work" was great. Shakespeare and Marlowe abound with references to Machiavelli. His seemingly amoral stance earned him a villainous reputation in Elizabethan England, where his name was synonymous with evil and atheism (Lord Macaulay wrote: "We doubt whether any name in literary history be so generally odious"), but his keen and practical analysis were admired by such important Enlightenment figures as Bacon, Rousseau, and above all David Hume (Smith 32). In this first appearance in English, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Trasferitosi a Roma nel 1598, fu protetto da eminenti personalità locali, tra cui il cardinale Alessandro Peretti, che gli fece assegnare dal papa un posto d'insegnante di filosofia e medicina. Cfr. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). The eleventh volume was the Atlas of the Heavens … [Click Below for Full Description]
