[xii], 305, [7] pp. Collation: A^6 B-O^12. 12mo. Machiavelli's Prince: the First English edition. [bound after:] Romulus and Tarquin, written in Italian by the Marques Virgilio Malvezzi. And now taught English by Henry Earle of Monmouth. Third edition. London: printed for Humphrey Moseley, 1648. Engraved title. [xvi], 222, [2, blank] pp. THE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF MACHIAVELLI'S IL PRINCIPE. First published in Rome in the Italian vernacular in 1532, The Prince marks the foundation of modern political theory. The work was innovative and controversial from the start, divorcing the study of politics from ethics and religion. The Prince was based on observations made by Machiavelli when he served in the Chancery of the Florentine Republic, and his close observation of the ruthless Cesare Borgia furnished Machiavelli with the model of the "Machiavellian" politician - a "mixture of audacity and prudence, cruelty and fraud, self-reliance and distrust of others" (PMM). The Prince was variously banned by the Catholic Church and by ecclesiastical authorities in England. Several 16th century manuscript English translations are known - it is likely that Shakespeare read one of these, for he has Richard III speak of the "notorious Machiavel" and the "murderous Machiavel" in Henry VI, parts I & 3. The Life of Castruccio Castracani, another study of contemporary Italians and which follows the text of The Prince, was a likely source for Mary Shelley's Valperga. Bertelli & Innocenti XVII, 38; Gerber III, p. 104, no. 2; PMM 63; ESTC S111853

[Crimson double-flowered mullein pink] Lychnis coronaira flore rubro pleno; [Speckler mullein pink] Lychnis coronaria flore in carnato punctata; [Mullein pink] Lychnis coronaria flore incarnato non punctata

Eichstatt, 1640. Hand-coloured engraving. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

THEATRUM BOTANICUM: THE THEATER OF PLANTS. OR, AN UNIVERSALL AND COMPLETE HERBALL

London: T. Cotes, 1640. First Edition. The Theater of Plants is "an herbal of large extent" and generally considered the last of the great English Herbals [Anderson, 227]. With 1775 pages describing nearly 3,800 plants, and over 2,700 woodcuts, it is worthy of the description "large extent". The splendid allegorical title page has been colored, as have a number of the plates. The title page "depict[s] signs of divine guidance: 'a cloud by day, a pillar of fire by night', and the presence of Adam, the first gardener, and Solomon, wises of men...and the scope of the work was well indicated by showing plants from the various continents" [Anderson, 230]. The "last of the old English herbalists" was Apothecary to James I, and his work was more original than either Gerard or Johnson" [Garrison-Morton, 1823] An important book, "the Theatrum marked a glorious sunset of the age of herbals, and it left a glow that will last as long as the English language is read" [Anderson, 234]. On the blank leaf is the name "Thomas Goldingham,, Ano. 1659" and the later note "June 21, 1666. Sold this book to Mr Hanserd Knollys [who was an English particular Baptist minister] for tenn pounds and warranted perfect by me, Nathaniell Nor[illegible]." A several small patches to the verso of the title page, and four (of 2700) woodcuts are repaired. The greens of the cuts have oxidized. Lacking the rear endpaper with a 1" x 2" surface loss to the front endpaper. In contemporary paneled calf with repair to the spine and wear to the corners. (Garrison-Morton, 1823; Anderson, Illustrated History of the Herbals).

        Kingdom of Napels - Blaeu.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE [Will. Shake-Speare] is named as one of the actors [or 'Principall Comedians' or 'Tragedians'] in several plays notably 'Everyman in his Humour' and 'Seianus his Fall'. [Shakespeare's Company produced several of Jonson's plays].

Virginiae partis australis et Floridae partis orientalis, interjacentiumq, regionum Nova Descriptio

Amsterdam: Blaeu, 1640. Copper engraving with period outline colour, Latin text on verso. Important early Dutch map of southeastern America: this copy with exceptionally wide margins and with very pretty period hand colouring. This is the second state of Blaeu's map of the southeastern portion of North America. The map depicts the region from present day northern Florida to Chesapeake Bay. France is shown as governing the southern portion of this land (though they had been forced out in fact some time before by the Spanish) and Great Britain as ruler of the northeast. As pointed out by Burden, this map improves on the Hondius-Mercator map of the same region in its depiction of the Outer Banks and in its inclusion of the Chesapeake Bay, and it provided the best depiction of the region until 1700. Its handsome cartouche surrounded by full figure Native Americans and its elaborate calligraphy contribute to make it one of the most artistically successful maps of 17th century America. Cumming, 41 (plate 26); Burden, The Mapping of North America 253; Goss, 31.

        Romagna olim Flaminia.

Amsterdam, 1640 - Incisione in rame, colorata d'epoca, 380x500.

Eichstatt, 1640. Hand-coloured engraving. In excellent condition apart from some mild printer's creases and ink residue on the plate. There are also some faded manuscript notes in the bottom margin and in the base of the plate.

Insulæ Americanæ in Oceano Septentrionali, cum terris adiacentibus

Amsterdam: Blaeu, 1640. Engraved with period outline colour. French text. Mild soiling more evident at the edges. Repaired split at base of center fold. This attractive map called the American Islands is essentially a coastal chart of the eastern seaboard from the Chesapeake to Florida, all of the Gulf of Mexico to the Orinoco River in Venezuela, and part of the Pacific coast of Central America. The map was based upon the Hessel Gerritz map of circa 1631, which was separately published and is extremely rare. Gerritz was the cartographer for the Dutch West India Company, working under Johannes de Laet, who was in charge of Dutch interests in the Americas and Africa. The new material for this map was gathered in 1628 during a voyage through the region that may have included Chesapeake Bay and certainly included all the places from the Bahamas south and southwest depicted in the map.

Saffroy, 17724. Labarère, Essai de bibliographie pyrénéiste, I, 961. Palau, 150 854. Paris, Jean Boudot, 1700. 4to. With a large woodcut vignette (by Bernard Picart) on the title-page, 4 folding numbered engraved plates containing 43 numbered diagrams, an engraved headpiece and initial at the opening of the main text. Contemporary sprinkled calf, gold-tooled spine.

Goldsmith BMC STC French 345; I. Grattan-Guinness, ed., Landmark writings in Western mathematics 1640-1940 (2005), p. 56; Poggendorff I, 383-384. First edition of the first extensive, separately published textbook on integral calculus, by Louis Carré (1663-1711), French mathematician and private teacher at Paris, published 44 years before Leonard Euler's classic textbook. It includes a wide variety of practical applications, including the measurement of surface areas, the determination of the volumes and centres of gravity of solid bodies, and problems of dynamics. With a contemporary owner's name on the title-page, a later 18th-century manuscript note on the endleaf and a couple manuscript notes in the text. A failed attempt to wash out the owner's name on the title-page has left a small faint stain. With the title-page slightly foxed and an occasional minor spot, but still in very good condition and with very large margins. The binding shows some cracks in the hinges, superficial damage to the leather and some corners skilfully repaired, but is still good and structurally sound. The most thorough presentation of integral calculus to its date.
