Gibson 141b. ~LLL~ Francis Bacon (1561-1626), was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, essayist and author. He has remained extremely influential through his written works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method. Bacon is considered one of the fathers of modern science. He proposed a great reformation of all processes of knowledge for the advancement of learning, which he called the 'Instauratio Magna,' or the 'Great Instauration,' planning this in imitation of the Biblical work of the six days of divine creation. 'Of Proficience and Advancement of Learning Divine and Human' was first published in 1605, in the form of a letter to King James, and was considered the first step in Bacon's Great Instauration scale, of 'partitions of the sciences.' The work was expanded, rewritten in Latin, and published in 1623 as 'De Augmentis Scientiarum,' which served as the basis for Oxford University's Dr. Gilbert Wats' translation here. Bacon's scientific classification system set forth in this work changed the way we look at the world, serving as the basis for Denis Diderot's renowned eighteenth century encyclopedia of the sciences, arts and crafts.

Amsterdam:: J. Broersz for the author,, 1640.. Amsterdam: J. Broersz for the author, 1640. 4to Small oblong 4to (134 x 181 mm). 4 parts in one, separately titled. [56] leaves, of which 38 leaves with engravings; without the poem in Italian sometimes appended at the end. Titles and text in French and Dutch. Engraved frontispiece (with title Le Bouquet des bergers), 36 full-page engravings containing 72 oval medallion portraits of women, printed on rectos with letterpress text on versos (except final plate, with blank verso), the engravings in parts 1 and 2 both lettered (A-X) and numbered (1-22), engravings 26-36 unnumbered, final allegorical engraving of a Sphinx and a Shepherd, all engravings by and after Crispijn van de Passe. Most of the portraits printed two to a plate, those on leaves numbered 5, 6, and 13 printed from two plates. Woodcut music for two songs in Part 4. Pasted down cancel slips correcting text facing engravings [28] and [33], the latter erroneously printing the poems for Erato twice. Title to part 1 backed in thick paper and browned, engravings 11, 12 and [26] with platemarks shaved at fore-edge, touching the portrait frames of the right-hand figure on 12 & [26], a few text leaves with short upper margins (no loss), one or two short marginal tears, some marginal discoloration. Later parchment over pasteboard (covers bowed).***first and only edition. This series of portraits of real women, most dressed as shepherdesses and all disguised under fictitious names, is devoted to the upper classes: sovereigns and noble ladies of Europe, noble young (unmarried) women, and wives and daughters of the prosperous merchant class. In this it differed from Crispijn II?s previous portrait book of women (while adopting its layout of two oval portraits per engraving), the Miroir des plus belles Courtisannes (1630), which revealed the faces of 40 "femmes de joie" from all over Europe. This new group of ladies, entirely respectable, are realistically depicted, long noses, double chins and all. That some of the matrons look a bit out of place in sherpherdess?s garb was of no concern to the artist, whose reasons for abjuring modern dress, he states coyly in his dedication to his subjects, the "nymphs of the Amstel," were to hide their identities and to avoid presenting them in fashions no longer au courant. In fact though, the choice of "disguise" had other motives: first of all, "Crispijn knew as well as we do that the attire of shepherdesses, which was often worn by ladies in the springtime, had amorous connotations" (Veldman, p. 330). More importantly, this costume was the fashion: "the pastoral mode was particularly popular with Utrecht painters, and even royal ladies had themselves depicted as shepherdesses ..." (loc. cit). Les vrais pourtraits in turn increased the appetite for pastoral dress, and numerous Dutch portraits from the 1640s were executed with the sitters dressed as shepherds or shepherdesses; the fashion also spread to England (cf. Frijhoff and Spies, Dutch Culture in a European Perspective, vol. 1: 1650, [2004], pp. 456-7). The women here depicted are neatly grouped by rank; thus part 1 contains royalty, commencing with the Empress of Germany and Anne of Austria (wife of Louis XIII), and including Marie de Medicis, the queens of Spain, England, Sweden and Denmark, and other aristocrats of royal blood. Part 2, les Damoiselles Nobles & Dames de Qualité, is devoted to lesser nobility, and Part 3, les Pourtraits des Femmes et Filles d'honorable Marchants, to ladies of the burgher or merchant class. Including friends from Crispijn?s social circle in Utrecht and Amsterdam, the portraits in this part have proven the hardest to identify. Some of the verses in French and Dutch facing each pair of portraits help to facilitate identification, but most provide few obvious clues. The final verses accompanying the engraving of the sphinx and shepherd (in French, Dutch, German and sometimes Italian versions), also contain "clues for deciphering the pseudonyms," notably that basic facts about each subject are to be found in the names in capitals above each engraved figure, but they must be read "either in Greek or in Latin, or backwards" to solve the riddles. Not surprisingly, "scholars have not yet succeeded in identifying all the sitters" (Veldman, p. 330). Part 4, Le Choeur des Muses, avec leur Chansons a l'honneur des vertueuses Femmes et Filles, contains depictions of Pallas and the nine muses, still based on real women, including several artists. The long poem in this final part, titled here "Aux Dames du Pais-Bas" (in Dutch "Aen de Nimphies vanden Amstel,") memorializes several artistic women, including de Passes?s deceased sister Magdalena, herself a prodigiously gifted engraver, whom he compares to Phidias and Praxiteles. As is evident from the printed correction slips, which vary from copy to copy, the work was subject to a number of press corrections and changes resulting in different textual states. The Princeton copy, for example, has cancel slips on p. [80], and the letterpress page facing plate 8 is printed upside down. As stated above, in our copy the poem in Part 4 is titled "Aux Dames du Pais-Bas" instead of "Aux Nymphes de l?Amstel," as described by Franken and appearing in the BnF copy (digitized); the typesetting of both the French and Dutch versions of the poem appears to be otherwise identical. The final poem, in German (signed C. de Pas), which is printed on the verso of the Sphinx and Shepherd engraving, is followed in many copies by a separate leaf with an Italian version, not included in the Lipperheide copy or this one. OCLC records four copies in US libraries (Princeton, Stanford, Newberry, Getty). Lipperheide 525; Colas 2290; Brunet I:22; Gay-Lemonnyer III:1381; D. Franken, L'Oeuvre gravée des Van de Passe 1371; Hollstein XVI, 187; Ilja M. Veldman, Crispijn de Passe and his Progeny (2001), 329-331.

        "Nova Virginiae Tabula".

1640. Kupferstich-Karte von W. Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1640, altkoloriert. Ca. 37,5 x 48 cm. Burden, The Mapping of North America No. 193, second state. Portinaro and Knirsch: The Cartography of North America: p. 158, Van Erman: The United States in Old Maps and Prints: pg. 20, Tooley: The Mapping of America: pgs. 136-172.. This is one of the most important seventeenth century maps of the Chesapeake Bay region. It shows Virginia with the Chesapeake bay, the place, where the first english settlers arrived in 1607, may 14th. The early settlement of Jamestown is noted as Iamestowne, and there are a number of other place names, both English and Native American. The map was derived from Capt. John Smith's map of 1612, which was the first to depict the bay and its tributaries with any accuracy. In the upper left corner is an engraving of the great Indian chief, Powhatan, seated on his throne and surrounded by his subjects. A Susquehanna chief is depicted on the right under the British coat-of-arms and a key cartouche. The plate was engraved by D. Grijp and originally published by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618. It was purchased by Willem Blaeu shortly after Hondius' death (1629) and Blaeu's imprint replaced that of Hondius. Small spot al lower left corner, otherwise a find copy in brilliant original color. Wide margins.

Aethiopia Superior vel Interior vulgo Abissinorum sive Presbiteri Ioannis Imperium

      - Amsterdam: after 1640. Copper engraved double page map, beautifully hand coloured by Dirck Jansz. Van Santen at the time of publication, sheet size: 21 x 24 1/2 inches. Without text on verso. A masterpiece of hand colouring by a Dutch old master. A beautiful map of central and Eastern Africa, including Mozambique north to present day Sudan. The map contains numerous coastal place names such as Mozambique Island, Quiloa, Mombaza, and Melinde indicating the importance of the area to both Arab, Portuguese, and traders and explorers from other countries. The map includes numerous rivers, villages and settlements throughout, and is highly embellished with elephants, ostriches and other animals within the map, as well as a decorative cartouche flanked by natives. The two Ptolemaic lakes of Zaire and Zaflan are in the lower portion of the map; Lake Niger, and the supposed course of the Niger River, is shown flowing westward. This map is based on Ortelius' 1573 map of the fictitious kingdom of Prester John. The myth of Prester John, the good Christian King of Africa waging his own crusade and defeating the enemies of Christianity, was based upon earlier legends of the Crusaders and is a fascinating piece of early mythological cartographic history. The present example is superbly hand coloured by famed illuminator Van Santen, with copious use of gold highlights identifying each town, boundaries, the gradients, the Equator and Tropic of Cancer, the sun burst above the cartouche and other highlights. "Atlases and books coloured by Van Santen figured among the showpieces of the most prominent collections . and [books] decorated by Van Santen were considered gifts worthy of princes . The colours, the gold, the patience and industriousness of Van Santen were obviously of great renown at the end of the 17th century . His use of colour was much freer than that of other colourists. The tone of the colours was made to complement the gold he used so lavishly. In his best work two other costly pigments, ultramarine and carmine are found in large amounts, mostly set against gold" (Goedings). The present map includes the use of ultramarine, i.e. lapis lazuli, on the clothing of the native flanking the left side of the cartouche. Literally meaning "from over the sea," the pigment was made from the semi-precious stone Lapis Lazuli, found at the time only in Afghanistan. During the Rennaissance and Baroque periods, the striking blue pigment, which was more expensive than gold, was used only by artists of great renown, including Vermeer, Titian, Massaccio, and, as the present map confirms, Van Santen. Van der Krogt (Atlantes) 8720:1B; Truusje Goedings, "Dirk Jansz. Van Santen . A Survey" (Amsterdam, 1992).

        Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, alias Barmudas.

1640. Kupferstich-Karte von W. Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1640, altkoloriert. Ca.40,5 x 53 cm Papier schwach gebräunt. Slaughter 923.. Important map by the Blaeu family, a highly decorative large scale depiction of Bermuda, divided into different shareholders' areas or 'tribes'. Rhumb lines and compass point at sea. Beautifully illustrated title and scale cartouches. Below the decorated border there is a list of the shareholders. Like many Bermuda maps of the period, this one is based on that of John Speed published in his Prospect. To his Dutch version of the popular Speed map, Blaeu has added a magnificent cartouche with Neptune boldly astride the royal coat of arms of England, cradling an English ship. The Virginia Company coat of arms, and the roundel commemorating shipwrecks off Bermuda, have been reversed from the earlier map. The coastlines of Florida, Cape Cod and New England are also shown. There is a miniature version of Bermuda, off the NW shore showing Bermuda's relation to the coast of North America. Subsequent cartographers of Bermuda took this to be a small island off the coast of Bermuda. From Blaeu's "Le Theatre du Monde, ou Novvel Atlas", Amsterdam 1640, with french text, original contemporary handcolour. A very fine copy. Wide margins. Lightly toned.

Leiden: Bonaventure & Abraham Elzevier 1640 - Leiden: Bonaventure & Abraham Elzevier, 1640. Folio (345 x 220 mm) 14 double-page engraved maps, 64 woodcut illustrations in text; two maps age-toned, one sheet (O1) with a corner torn off, modern imitation binding, spine richly gilt with six raised bands, marbled sheepskin, marbled edge. Title printed in red and black with woodcut printer's vignette. Sabin (America) 38558; Willems 497; Borba de Moraes 451; Burden 215, 229-232 FIRST FRENCH EDITION. "This French translation of de Laet contains many materials not to be found in the original Dutch, chiefly vocabularies of Indian tribe". First published in 1625, the author maintained the currency of subsequent editions by adding events as they occurred, making this the most complete edition. This edition records the sacking of Bahia, the conquest of Olinda, Itamaraca, Parahiba, and Rio Grande do Norte. The work was used as an atlas during the second half of the seventeenth century and is recognized for the accuracy of its maps because de Laet had access to the latest geographic data as a director of the Dutch West India Company. Burden points out the new, more open style of engraving which was adopted by Blaeu. "From a scholarly point of view this French translation is the best edition, and for studies concerning Brazil the additions. make it an indispensable work" (Borba de Moraes 451). "This work is full of the most excellent and curious details of the natural history, and the character, manners, and customs of the American aborigines, derived from the reports of the European mission establishments in America" (Charlevoix, quoted in Sabin (America) 38558).       1640. Gradnetz. Aus Blaeus "Le Theatre du Monde, ou Novvel Atlas", Amsterdam 1640, mit französischem Rückentext. This handsome map shows a major section of central and eastern Africa including Mozambique north to present day Sudan. The map contains numerous rivers, villages and settlements throughout, and is highly embellished with elephants, ostriches and other animals within the map, as well as the decorative cartouche on the right lower corner of the map. Two natives stand at the sides of the title, two african children are sitting on the top of the cartouche, another child is standing on the right side. In the left corner a child is sitting on the benchmarks. This map is based on Ortelius' map of Prester John of 1573. The myth of Prester John, the good Christian King of Africa waging his own crusade and defeating the enemies of Christianity, was based upon earlier legends of the Crusaders and is a fascinating piece of early mythological cartography. From Blaeu's "Le Theatre du Monde, ou Novvel Atlas", Amsterdam 1640, with french text, original contemporary handcolour. Some overall browning. Wide margins.
