1640 - Rome: Rughesi, c.1597. Two sheets conjoined, total 530 x 700mm. Trimmed to neatline as probably published, old folds flattened. Some colour spotting. A large map of Africa, decorated with an ornate title cartouche and numerous ships and sea-monsters. Peculiarly the dedication to the Duke of Mantua and his armorial in the top corners have been masked by placing oval paper patches on the copper plate, leaving two unprinted areas. It is known from correspondence between Annibale Chiepo and Rughesi that the Duke failed to pay the second half of his promised commission to Rughesi, causing the publisher to remove the references to the duke. The only cartographic work of Fausto Rughesi, a Tuscan architect working in Rome, was a set of maps of the world and four continents, all originally dedicated to Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (1562-1612). Gonzaga employed Giovanni Antonio Magini as tutor to his sons and has Magini's Atlas of Italy dedicated to him. Even individually Rughesi's maps are extremely rare: Betz and Burden could find only two examples each of the Africa and America respectively, and neither mention the two blanked-out areas. BETZ: 36, 'exceedingly beautiful, finely-engraved map of Africa. All of his maps are exceedingly rare'; See SHIRLEY 206 & BURDEN 108.

Theatrum Botanicum, The Theater of Plants . Or An Universall and Compleat Herball?

Thomas Cotes, London 1640 - Folio, with elaborately engraved title-page and about 2700 woodcut illustrations in the text; a very good copy, the text clean and fresh, in an attractive later binding of smooth polished calf, with the armorial bookplate of "Brodie of Brodie" The largest early English herbal, with 2700 original woodblock illustrations. An especially good copy of this famous and beautiful English herbal, 'one of the two main pillars of botany in England till the time of Ray' (James Edward Smith). The largest herbal in English, this was also the last great medicinally-based plant study, by an author who thought of himself as first and foremost an apothecary. Early botanical works were frequently illustrated with original woodcuts, and this book is a marvellous example of the impressive beauty that the relatively naïve method of woodcut illustration conveys in a botanical work, with a flower portrayed in line in singular contrast to the accompanying botanical description: altogether two thousand seven hundred woodblocks were individually cut for this massive herbal, which describes more than four thousand plants, most of them with medicinal properties. Parkinson had given notice of his intention to compile an herbal in his Paradisus terrestris of 1629, but was delayed by the publication of the second Johnson edition of Gerarde's Herball, in 1636. This delay meant that Parkinson's work had time to grow much larger than originally planned, and on publication it included about one thousand more plants than Gerarde could, and describes many species not previously recorded. Natural history collecting in exotic lands was actively pursued from the earliest period of botanical study, and the earliest exploring ships were fitted out with special compartments for the transportation of animals and plants. Parkinson noted in his Paradisi in sole of 1629 that he had obtained a specimen of the "Scilla alba" in the manner of the day - which meant gathering with other collectors at the quay to meet the returning ships, and to purchase rare specimens directly from the sailors. John Parkinson (1567-1650), a London pharmacist, received the title of Royal Apothecary from James I. Later, Charles I appointed him as his chief botanist ("Botanicus Regius Primarius"). Parkinson had a private garden in Long Acre 'well stored with rarities' (Theatrum, p. 609). Work on his herbal was helped by notes and unpublished material by the French botanist Matthias de l'Obel who had lived in north London in the last years of his life.

        Le Muet, comedie

Brueys, Abbe David-Augustin de. (1640-1723); Palaprat, Jean (1650-1721). Le Muet, comedie. Paris: T. Guilain, 1693. First peformed June 22, 1691 Theatre de la rue des Fosses Saint-Germain, Paris. Original edition. Cioranescu 17, 51746. 12mo. Old wrappers. Leaf of title, verso blank; 1p priv 30 January 1693, acheve 4 May 1693; 1p acteurs; 160pp. text. Collation: []2, A-N6, 02. Five act comedy of intrigue in prose. Set in Naples. A Baron has two sons, Timante and the chevalier. Timante wishes to marry a young widow who is a countess, while his father wants him to marry the daughter of the marquis. The countess has a beautiful young ward, Zaide, of unknown origin, who was brought to the countess by a sea captain. The intrigue of the play involves an attempt by the second son, the chevalier, to successfully disguise himself as a mute valet in order to be near Zaide, with whom he is in love. Unfortunately, the sea captain will not let Zaide marry a mute, and the Baron will not let the Chevalier marry Zaide. A happy ending for all involved follows the unraveling of the girl's true parentage. Le Muet is based on Eunuchus of Terence. This version is considered to be superior to the adaptation of La Fontaine because it is cleverly modernized. The play was very popular until the death of J.-B. Raisin, in 1693, who acted the character of Frontin, the valet who dominates the intrigue. It was republished and revived in 1716 and acted "with fair frequency" until 1832 (Lancaster). Jean Palaprat, dramatist born in Toulouse, is best known for this play, also for L'Avocat Pathelin (1706) and other comedies; Abbe David-Augustin de Brueys, dramatist from Aix-en-Provence, was converted to Catholicsm by Boussuet. Aside from his comedies, he wrote a Christian tragedy, Gabinie, a set in the time of Diocletian. He is best remembered for his collaboration with Palaprat. References: Solennine 3343 (later edition). It was also published by Hondt, in La Haye 1694. OCLC: Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Latrobe.

        Les harangues academiques.

Chez Augustin Courbé 1640 - - Chez Augustin Courbé, A Paris _1640, Fort in-8 (11x17,4cm), relié. - Edition originale, rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae partis orientalis, interjacentiumq. regionum Nova Descriptio.

1640. Kupferstich-Karte von W. Blaeu, Amsterdam, ca. 1640, altkoloriert. Ca. 38,5 x 50,5 cm. Papier gleichmäßig gebräunt. Burden, Mapping of North America , no. 253, second state.. This map of Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and northern Florida is described by William P. Cumming in "The SouthEast in Early Maps" as "the most correct map of this area yet to appear." The map has both the English and French Royal Arms marking their areas of influence. The limited extent of knowledge of the area is apparent: the source of the St. Johns River, for example, is shown to be a large lake to the north west, in the Appalachian Mountains. There are many decorative elements including an ornate scroll title cartouche, with figures of Indians, based on le Moyne's drawings, scale-bar cartouche and sailing ship vignettes. From "Le Theatre du Monde, ou Novvel Atlas", Amsterdam 1640, with french text. Paper browned, wide margins, contemporary handcolor.

Gibson 141b. ~LLL~ Francis Bacon (1561-1626), was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, essayist and author. He has remained extremely influential through his written works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method. Bacon is considered one of the fathers of modern science. He proposed a great reformation of all processes of knowledge for the advancement of learning, which he called the 'Instauratio Magna,' or the 'Great Instauration,' planning this in imitation of the Biblical work of the six days of divine creation. 'Of Proficience and Advancement of Learning Divine and Human' was first published in 1605, in the form of a letter to King James, and was considered the first step in Bacon's Great Instauration scale, of 'partitions of the sciences.' The work was expanded, rewritten in Latin, and published in 1623 as 'De Augmentis Scientiarum,' which served as the basis for Oxford University's Dr. Gilbert Wats' translation here. Bacon's scientific classification system set forth in this work changed the way we look at the world, serving as the basis for Denis Diderot's renowned eighteenth century encyclopedia of the sciences, arts and crafts.
