BINDINGS - EMBROIDERED)
London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1637. This diminutive devotional is exquisitely bound in a style popular in 17th century England, its fanciful design incorporating brightly striped flowers of varying types, large and boldly colored birds, and tiny, timid bunnies, all executed in feather stitch. The rather whimsical, free-hand quality of the design, coupled with the fact that the fabric has been put on the book upside down, may indicate the work of a talented amateur rather than a professional craftsman. The silver metallic thread used to create the twining stems of the flowers serves a practical purpose as well as an aesthetic one. According to Davenport, the raised silver embellishments so prevalent on embroidered bindings of this period help to protect the delicate silken needlework: "if it had not been for the efficient protection of those little metal walls," the fragile embroidered cloth would not have survived centuries in excellent shape, as the present specimen has.. 95 x 63 mm. (3 3/4 x 2 1/2"). 26 p.l., 221, [26] leaves (occasional misnumbering of leaves, but complete). UTTERLY CHARMING CONTEMPORARY WHITE SATIN EMBROIDERED IN COLORS AND SILVER THREAD, covers with curving branches of silver bearing flowers and leaves in multiple colors, each with a large bird perched on the limb, and a small bunny nibbling at vegetation at its base, flat spine embroidered with flowers and a pomegranate on a slender silver vine, blue watered silk pastedowns, hinges reinforced with (slightly later) paper, all edges gilt and delicately gauffered with a guilloche roll. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
This beautiful map, originally published in 1637, eventually replaced Hondius' map of the North Pole and became the prototype for many later maps including those of Blaeu. This map incorporates the discoveries made by Captain Thomas James along the southern and western shores of Hudson Bay in 1631-2. The delineation on Russia's Arctic coast is derived from the information from Willem Barents' exploration of 1596-7. The English explorer Hugh Willoughby has a small island named after him off the coast of Lapland (Sir Hugo Willoughby's Landt). Willoughby captained an expedition of three ships to find a Northeast Passage in 1553, but two of the ships were ripped away during a storm. Willoughby and his crew from the two ships died and were found on Novaya Zemla the following year, with his journal. The third ship with his second-in-command Richard Chancellor made it to Russia. Rhumb lines radiate from the North Pole and several compass roses embellish the chart. A large title cartouche, with two figures and numerous wind heads, conveniently hide the northwest coast of America. The map is further decorated with ships and a cartouche with Jansson's imprint, which depicts men in parkas, a polar bear and foxes. This example is the fourth state of the plate with Nova Zemla connected to the mainland … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE PSALMS OF DAVID AS TRANSLATED BY JAMES I KING OF ENGLAND * * * * The Psalmes of David, Translated by King James I; London, 1637. Rarely seen, this early English translation of the Psalms is virtually unknown. While everyone is familiar with the Bible that bears his name, very few are aware that King James actually authored his own translation of the Psalms of David. Some have called it - "the book that brought down the monarchy." The Book of Psalms is one of the best loved books of the Bible. A devout Christian and learned scholar, King James produced his own translation of the Psalms as a devotional exercise. However, after the death of King James, Charles the First attempted to force the use of this translation (intended as a private devotional work) throughout the churches of England. Some historians state that this abuse of power was (for many) the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back" and contributed to widespread support of the rebellion against the crown. England was plunged into Civil War. King Charles I was deposed and beheaded. With many burned or otherwise destroyed, this unique translation became a footnote of history. Very few remain. This listing thus offers the opportunity of securing a rare work of great historical significance. Beautifully bound and richly appointed, this work is textually complete with the original title (as pictured). Featuring a full calf binding and accented in 24k gold, the fine hand-tooling and gilt work speak eloquently of its royal association. William L'Isle of Wilburgham
London: T. Paine, 1637. Rebacked with a new spine label and gilt lettering. With a large commentary by Simon Goulart de Senlis. Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas (1544-July 1590) was a French poet and soldier. A Huguenot, he served under Henry of Navarre. Du Bartas' poems went rapidly out of fashion as the 17th century, characterised by a tight and precise style. His his epic poems La Sepmaine, Creation du Monde and La Seconde Sepmaine retell the main events of the of the Bible from a Huguenot perspective. The Colonnyes, which is the third section of this book offers an insight into The New World of the 1600s. This volume has erratic pagination. This work was taken from La Seconde Semaine and was originally published as Part of Du Bartas in 1625. This volume appears to be missing the final leaf after Finis, which the ESTC (S116416) states should be an Epistle to the Lord Admirall. 1596. With French and English translations throughout. In a full calf binding. There is wear to the extremities including areas of loss and bumping. The inner hinges are strained and the end papers have been removed. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally clean with the odd handling mark. There is the occasional institutional ink stamp but they do not interfere with the text. There are a couple of colour pencil notes to the front end papers. There is some slight chipping to the free end papers. Overall Condition: Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

1637. Amsterdam, Typographia Blaviana (Blaeu), 1683. 4to. Contemp. full vellum, fully intact. Old handwritten title to spine. Engraved portrait (Descartes). Titlepage printed in red/black with woodcut illustration. (14),520 pp. Profusely textillustrated with geometrical diagrams. The first edition of the Geometry was published in French, 1637 together with his "Discours de la Méthode". It was partly ignored in editions of "Discours", but when it appeared on its own in the Latin translation (as here), which was aimed at the European public it also contained a commentary by van Schooten and a translatin of the notes sent to Descartes by Florimond de Beaume, the invention of the analytic method was distributed to the learned world and it thus revolutionized algebra and mechanics. The Geometry was designated by John Stuart Mill as "the greatest single step ever made in the progress of the exact sciences".Grattan-Guiness "Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940", No. 1.

DESCARTES, René.
Jan Maire, Leiden, 1637. First edition, a fine, large copy in untouched contemporary vellum, of Descartes? first and most famous work. Following the Discours, now celebrated as one of the canonical texts of Western philosophy, are three ?Essais?, the last of which, La Géométrie, contains the birth of analytical or co-ordinate geometry, ?of epoch-making importance? (Cajori, History of Mathematics, p. 174), designated by John Stuart Mill as ?the greatest single step ever made in the progress of the exact sciences? It ?rendered possible the later achievements of seventeenth-century mathematical physics? (Hall, Nature and nature?s laws (1970), p. 91). The first of the Essais, La Dioptrique, contains Descartes? discovery of ?Snell?s law? of refraction of light (earlier than Snell); the second, Les Météores, contains Descartes? explanation of the rainbow, based on the optical theories developed in the first Essai. ?It is no exaggeration to say that Descartes was the first of modern philosophers and one of the first modern scientists; in both branches of learning his influence has been vast . The revolution he caused can be most easily found in his reassertion of the principle (lost in the middle ages) that knowledge, if it is to have any value, must be intelligence and not erudition. His application of modern algebraic arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which is the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science. His statement of the elementary laws of matter and movement in the physical universe, the theory of vortices, and many other specula … [Click Below for Full Description]
