William L'Isle of Wilburgham
London: T. Paine, 1637. Rebacked with a new spine label and gilt lettering. With a large commentary by Simon Goulart de Senlis. Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas (1544-July 1590) was a French poet and soldier. A Huguenot, he served under Henry of Navarre. Du Bartas' poems went rapidly out of fashion as the 17th century, characterised by a tight and precise style. His his epic poems La Sepmaine, Creation du Monde and La Seconde Sepmaine retell the main events of the of the Bible from a Huguenot perspective. The Colonnyes, which is the third section of this book offers an insight into The New World of the 1600s. This volume has erratic pagination. This work was taken from La Seconde Semaine and was originally published as Part of Du Bartas in 1625. This volume appears to be missing the final leaf after Finis, which the ESTC (S116416) states should be an Epistle to the Lord Admirall. 1596. With French and English translations throughout. In a full calf binding. There is wear to the extremities including areas of loss and bumping. The inner hinges are strained and the end papers have been removed. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally clean with the odd handling mark. There is the occasional institutional ink stamp but they do not interfere with the text. There are a couple of colour pencil notes to the front end papers. There is some slight chipping to the free end papers. Overall Condition: Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

DESCARTES, RENÉ. - "THE GREATEST SINGLE STEP"
1637. Amsterdam, Typographia Blaviana (Blaeu), 1683. 4to. Contemp. full vellum, fully intact. Old handwritten title to spine. Engraved portrait (Descartes). Titlepage printed in red/black with woodcut illustration. (14),520 pp. Profusely textillustrated with geometrical diagrams. Printed on good paper, wide-margined, clean and fine. ¶ Third Latin edition of Descartes masterpiece, the founding work of Analytical Geometry and the birth of coordinate geometry. The first edition of the Geometry was published in French, 1637 together with his "Discours de la Méthode". It was partly ignored in editions of "Discours", but when it appeared on its own in the Latin translation (as here), which was aimed at the European public it also contained a commentary by van Schooten and a translatin of the notes sent to Descartes by Florimond de Beaume, the invention of the analytic method was distributed to the learned world and it thus revolutionized algebra and mechanics. The Geometry was designated by John Stuart Mill as "the greatest single step ever made in the progress of the exact sciences".Grattan-Guiness "Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940", No. 1.

DESCARTES, René.
Jan Maire, Leiden, 1637. First edition, a fine, large copy in untouched contemporary vellum, of Descartes? first and most famous work. Following the Discours, now celebrated as one of the canonical texts of Western philosophy, are three ?Essais?, the last of which, La Géométrie, contains the birth of analytical or co-ordinate geometry, ?of epoch-making importance? (Cajori, History of Mathematics, p. 174), designated by John Stuart Mill as ?the greatest single step ever made in the progress of the exact sciences? It ?rendered possible the later achievements of seventeenth-century mathematical physics? (Hall, Nature and nature?s laws (1970), p. 91). The first of the Essais, La Dioptrique, contains Descartes? discovery of ?Snell?s law? of refraction of light (earlier than Snell); the second, Les Météores, contains Descartes? explanation of the rainbow, based on the optical theories developed in the first Essai. ?It is no exaggeration to say that Descartes was the first of modern philosophers and one of the first modern scientists; in both branches of learning his influence has been vast . The revolution he caused can be most easily found in his reassertion of the principle (lost in the middle ages) that knowledge, if it is to have any value, must be intelligence and not erudition. His application of modern algebraic arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which is the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science. His statement of the elementary laws of matter and movement in the physical universe, the theory of vortices, and many other specula … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRANDI, Giulio Cesare Ascanio
Pietro Micheli, 1637. Contemporary vellum, title on spine. Ascanio Grandi, great admiror of Tasso and author of the "Tancredi", published in 1632, writes this essay on poetry mostly to add value to his poem. That is why it's published under his brother's name, Giulio Cesare.

One of the classic accounts of the early settlement of New England, looked to increasingly by modern historians and anthropologists for its unbiased and detailed accounts of Indian life in early New England, descriptions of flora and fauna, and internecine struggles among the colonists. Morton first came to New England in 1622 and lived there until his expulsion by the Plymouth colonists a decade later. He was particularly sympathetic to the way of life of the Indians, and provides extensive descriptions of customs, hunting and planting, artifacts and lifestyles in the first section of the work. The second part provides a remarkable account of the landscape and ecology of New England (William Cronon draws heavily on Morton in his pioneering CHANGES IN THE LAND). The final section of Morton's account is the most famous historically, since it gives an account of his long and often amusing feud with the Plymouth Colony and a description of his separate settlement at Merry-Mount, where his close association with the Indians of the area and open defiance of the laws of the Plymouth settlers provi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAMPANELLA, Tommaso.
Parsiis, apud Dionysium Bechet, M.DC.XXXVII.
Acquaforte, 1637, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Lancellotti, Secondo
Appresso Guerigli. [Click Below for Full Description]
