[BERNINI] / LASENA, Pietro
Rome: Giacomo Faccioti, 1637. Rare first edition of this meditation inspired by the death of the author's parents in a shipwreck, including (rather unexpectedly) the first engraved image of Bernini's Barcaccia fountain, commissioned by Urban VIII and completed in 1629. This also appears to be the earliest reference in print to the Barcaccia: the earliest reference known to Hibbard and Jaffe was in Toti's 1638 guidebook, a year later. Since the symbolism of the fountain's double-prowed ship (visible in our engraving) is a matter of considerable debate, it is interesting that Lasena notes (pp. 74-77) that he and his friends often walked past the fountain in the evenings and discussed its meaning. He prints a poem in Greek written at the time of the fountain's completion by the noted scholar and theologian Leone Allacci, and several poems by Gaspar de Simeonibus, one of which had won the favor of the pope himself. There is no mention in Cleombrotus of a story that apparently became popular in the 19th c., which linked the ship (which appears to be sinking) to a 1598 flood of the Tiber that left a ship washed up in the Piazza di Spagna, where the Barcaccia fountain now stands.According to the surviving documents the Barcaccia was constructed under the direction of Pietro Bernini, but Hibbard and Jaffe argue persuasively that the design was an early work of his son Gian Lorenzo, showing an emblematical concetto that is typically Berninesque. They consider the Barcaccia the first Roman fountain truly in the Baroque style. The Cleombrotus is a meditation on death by shipwreck or d … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES, René.
A fine copy of the important first Latin edition of Descarte's </i>Géométrie</i> - designated by John Stuart Mill as "the greatest single step ever made in the progress of the exact sciences" Originally published in French as an appendix to the <i>Discours de la Méthode</i> (1637), Descartes' coordinate geometry was ignored in several edition of the <i>Discours</i>. It was due to Van Schooten's Latin translation, with his extensive commentaries, that Cartesian geometry was widely adopted by the mathematical community, and thus paved the way for Newton and Leibniz. Landmark Writtings in Western Mathematics no 1 (citing both the 1637 original and the 1649 edition).<br/><br/> "It was from Schooten's edition of the <i>Géométrie</i> that contemporary mathematicians lacking proficiency in French first learned Cartesian mathematics. In this mathematics they encountered a systematic presentation of the material, not the customary, more classificatory approach that essentially listed single propositions, for the most part in unconnected parallel. Further, in the Cartesian scheme the central position was occupied by algebra, which Descartes considered to be the only 'precise form of mathematics'." (DSB). <br/><br/> "[Schooten] wrote a commentary on the text, explaining and completing points where proofs or steps were missing; he laid foundations; he linked the text to the theory in other publications; he simplified arguments; and made corrections, he systemized the contents, he widened the scope of the text (i.e., he made generalizations, answered questions that Descartes had left op … [Click Below for Full Description]

DELLA BELLA STEFANO
Firenze 1637 - Acquaforte, 1637, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Morton, Thomas:
Amsterdam: Jacob Frederick Stam, 1637.. 188,[3]pp. Small quarto. 20th-century brown morocco, gilt, a.e.g., gilt innder dentelles, by Riviere & Son. Minor toning and soiling to text. Near fine. In a brown half morocco and cloth slipcase. One of the classic accounts of the early settlement of New England, looked to increasingly by modern historians and anthropologists for its unbiased and detailed accounts of Indian life in early New England, descriptions of flora and fauna, and internecine struggles among the colonists. Morton first came to New England in 1622 and lived there until his expulsion by the Plymouth colonists a decade later. He was particularly sympathetic to the way of life of the Indians and provides extensive descriptions of customs, hunting, planting, artifacts, and lifestyles in the first section of the work. The second part provides a remarkable account of the landscape and ecology of New England (William Cronon draws heavily on Morton in his pioneering CHANGES IN THE LAND). The final section of Morton's account is the most famous historically, since it gives an account of his long and often amusing feud with the Plymouth Colony and a description of his separate settlement at Merry-Mount, where his close association with the Indians of the area and open defiance of the laws of the Plymouth settlers provided one of the more colorful episodes in early colonial New England. Morton's work is very scarce on the market, only three copies having appeared at auction in the last thirty years. A book of the greatest importance, perhaps the best single account … [Click Below for Full Description]

CATS, Jacob (1577-1660)
Hendrick vander Putte, Papier en Boekverkooper op't Water, in de Lootsman [n.d.], t' Amsterdam - Early eighteenth century edition (based on the imprint) of the Dutch poet and politician's rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity, first published in Dordrecht, in 1637. 16mo: [44], 673, [3]pp, with an engraved title page (in addition to the letterpress title) to the first work, two engraved full-page portraits (one of Anna Maria Schurmans and one of Jacob Cats), and a full-page allegorical engraving, 'Het Derde Deel,' in addition to 51 half-page engravings in the text. Contemporary vellum, with 'J. Cats' in manuscript to the spine. The binding is soiled but sound, the pages and plates clean, but with occasional browning, finger-soiling and mild staining. Marginal loss to S3, affecting neither the text nor the plate on p. 234. Contemporary ownership inscriptions to both fly leaves. Cats was one of the distinguished Dutch writers of Holland's golden age, but his Orangist and Calvinistic opinions set him apart from the liberal school of Amsterdam poets. Still, for nearly two centuries, he enjoyed enormous popularity. Also included are discussions of marriage after rape, the breaking of marriage bonds, adultery, and the l … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Cleombrotus is a meditation on death by shipwreck or dr … [Click Below for Full Description]
