Jodocus Hondius born 1563 in Ghent (Flanders) and grown up there. He became a globe maker and map engraver. In 1593 set up his business in Amsterdam after he spent some years in London. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer or Speed. Hondius bought the plates of Mercator in 1604, added around 40 maps and published the Atlas first 1606 still under Mercators name. After his death 1612 in Amsterdam, the business was carried out by his sons Jodocus II and Henricus (1597-1651). Condition: Excellent, given age. Original middle fold. German text on rear. 1636. Raffinata incisione raffigurante il Golfo del Messico e le isole delle Indie Occidentali insieme alla costa americana settentrionale e meridionale. Il dato cartografico si basa sulla rara carta del Gerritsz del 1631. L'area contemplata è esattamente quella illustrata da Gerritsz, ad eccezione dell'inclusione della costa occidentale del Centro America. La nomenclatura nel Nord America è praticamente identica, a parte l'aggiunta della Viriginia in questa carta. La mappa di Gerritsz è il frutto delle osservazioni dirette, realizzate dal cartografo durante il suo viaggio in Sud America e Indie Occidentali nel 1628. Il Golfo del Messico e i Carabi sono disegnati con linee lossodromiche, splendide rose dei venti e vascelli in navigazione. Jan / Johannes de Visscher, the younger (ca. 1636-1692) was a Dutch Golden Age engraver who later became a painter at age 58. He made famous print after Wouwermans and Berchem, as well as Ostade and Van Goyen. He was the brother of Cornelis II and Lambert. Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem / Berghem (1620-1683) was a highly esteemed and prolific Dutch Golden Age painter of pastoral landscapes, populated with mythological or biblical figures, but also of a number of allegories and genre pieces. Condition: Very good, given age. Vertical fold near middle. Small tears in top of fold and in left margin, reinforced using contemporary paper backed with acid free archival tape.
