KIRCHER, Athanasius
S. Congr. de propag. Fide, 1636. FIRST EDITION. 4to. pp. (xxiv) 338 (ii). Roman letter, with Italic, Greek, Coptic, Arabic and Ethiopian, occasional Hebrew and Chinese. Printer’s device to t-p, c.15 woodcuts of epigraphic inscriptions, coins, hieroglyphs and diagram of the Egyptian cosmos, decorated heads- and tailpieces. Light age browning, heavier to a few gatherings, faint spotting in places, lightly smudged offsetting and marginal repair to two ll. A good, well-margined copy in C17 vellum over boards. A good copy of Athanasius Kircher’s fundamental study of the Coptic language. Kircher (1602-80) was a German Jesuit, author of works on linguistics, medicine, geology, biology, magnetism, visual perception and music. Beside Hebrew and Syriac, essential for biblical exegesis, Kircher taught non-European languages at the Collegium Romanum, including Chinese and Egyptian. Based on epigraphic inscriptions and texts in the Vatican Library, his ‘Prodromus’ was the first of several ground-breaking works on Egyptology. Kircher shifted orientalist and esoteric Renaissance antiquarianism, led by Valeriano’s ‘Hieroglyphica’ (1556) and based on Horapollon’s ancient theories, onto the plane of linguistic science. Whilst most of his translations from Coptic and Egyptian are now deemed incorrect, he was the first to explain the phonetic value of hieroglyphs and to prove that Coptic was the precursor of the Egyptian language. With masterful scholarly syncretism, the ‘Prodromus’ dissects the history and workings of Coptic—e.g., its etymology from the city of Copta and its institutions, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

HESIUS (Gulielmus)
Antuverpiae [Antwerp] Ex Officina Plantinana Balthasaris Moreti, 1636. 12mo, 146 x 77 mms., pp. [2] 3 - 404 [405 - 406 privileges, 407 colophon, 408 blank], with woodcut holy motto IHS on title-page, 2 engraved vignette of angelic cherub on page 6, triangle image on page 8, cipher on page 10, geometric design on page 18, 41 engraved emblems within text in de Fide, 30 emblems in Spe, and 40 emblems in Charitate, additional engraved emblems on pages 147, and 263, all images present, two early names in ink on title-page, contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine, with bookplate printed in red and black on the verso of the title-page, of The Friary, Stratford, London, the glue from which has browned the title-page; otherwise a very good copy, with clear impressions of the emblems. Hesius' Emblemata Sacra is probably the best-known of the books of sacred emblems published in the late 16th century and throughout the 17th century, though not all the images in this volume could be designated sacred. Alison Saunders in The Seventeenth-century French Emblem: A Study in Diversity provides information about the print history of the emblems: "In the original version published by Lucas Jennis in 1622 the collection comprised only fifty emblems, but in 1624 it was doubled in size, and the original collection became Part 1 of a 2-part collection: Emblemata sacra...." The woodcuts are by Jan Christoffel Jegher after Erasmus Quellinus. The emblems are striking and natural. John Manning in The Emblem Tradition in the Low Countries records that "Hesius had the good fortune to employ t … [Click Below for Full Description]

It seems likely that the ownership inscription at the mid-point of the title-page reads "Marius Albericius". Wikipedia notes that his name was rendered a great number of different ways, the surname being given "as Albrizj, Alberici, Albericius and Albericci"; Alberizzi (1609-1680) was the powerful seventeenth-century Cardinal of San Giovanni a Porta Latina in Rome. The almost illegible autograph beneath the imprint seems to read "Petri Farnese/ Farnesse." Cardinal Alberizzi's mother was Giulia Farnese, and his father was Giovanni Alberizzi, Prince of Vetrana; so this copy of Emblemata Sacra enjoys a very distinctive provenance. The Farnese family is renowned for great ecclesiastical heights in the history of the Catholic church – Pope Paul III, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, and Cardinal Odoard … [Click Below for Full Description]

IRELAND [Laws]
the Society of Stationers, 1636. FIRST EDITION. Folio. ff [vii], 101. A-S⁶ Black letter, some Roman. Title within fine architectural border, woodcut arms of Charles I of verso of first leaf, those of Stafford on A3, large woodcut initials and grotesque head and tail-pieces, slightly later autograph of “Wm, Conyngham” at head of title with price mark. Minor oil stain to very outer margin of title, rare marginal spot or very minor stain. A very good copy, crisp and clean with good margins in contemporary English or Irish calf, covers bordered with a double blind rule, later red morocco label gilt, all edges red. A very good copy of the first edition of these very rare Irish statutes printed during Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford’s tenure as Lord Deputy of Ireland with his and Charles I arms, in London under a false imprint of Dublin. These statutes covering civil, criminal, and administrative law were passed during the Irish Parliament called in 1634-5. “The Parliament called in Ireland in 1634 is an event that has been surprisingly little discussed by English historians, despite its obvious value as a guide to government thinking on parliaments during the years of Personal Rule. In fact,it was the years of the so called personal rule that witnessed the only successful parliaments of Charles reign - the ‘Coronation Parliament’ of 1633 in Scotland and the Irish parliament of 1634-5. Indeed Wentworth stated frankly in a letter to his cousin George Butler that the 1634 parliament had been ‘the only ripe Parliament that hath been gathered in my Time, and all the res … [Click Below for Full Description]

CESI BERNARDO
Jacques e Pierre Prost, 1636. In folio (mm365x235); Pagg. [Click Below for Full Description]

Vinciana, n. 3164).

Later calf. 15 cm (Ref: ESTC S120326) (Details: Back with five raised bands, and elaborately gilt. Boards with blind double fillet borders) (Condition: Small pencil note on the front pastedown and the title) (Note: The German scholar Johann von Wowern, or Wower, or Wouwer, 1574/75-1612, son of a Dutch religious refugee, studied law at the university of Marburg, and went in 1593 to Leiden to continue his studies, especially classics, at the newly established university. There he stayed for five years and established relations with the Dutch scholars Meursius, Scriverius, Heinsius and Baudius, and also with Scaliger. The arch-enemy of Scaliger, Caspar Scioppius, suggested maliciously that Scaliger had entertained illicit sexual relations with Wower. Wower published an edition of Petronius' 'Satyricon' (Lugd. QUIÑONES (Juan de) ].
Impressa en Valanson (Madrid?), por Jacome Corifio, 1636. - in-4. 99ff. (dont 98 numérotés). (1f.blanc). Rare first edition, first issue, of this hugely influential and popular travel book, which went through eight editions between 1636 and 1671, one of the earliest and best accounts of the Ottoman empire. Sir Henry Blount, third son of Sir Thomas Pope Blount, distinguished himself in the early part of his career by these travels into the Levant of more than six thousand miles, the greater part of which he went by land, gaining for himself the epithet of "The great Traveller."
