[16], 355, [9]; [2], 36; [4], 163, [3]; 24 pp. Rare eighth(?) edition of the Dutch translation of a work on Biblical travels, written by the German Protestant pastor and theologian Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606), first published in German in 1581 and translated by Matthias Hasaert (1578?-1663). The work proved extremely popular and appeared in almost 80 editions up to the 18th century. "However much a work of the study, this book could be easily taken and read as a travel book. Bünting, although he had never actually visited Palestine, produced an original work by recasting Sacred Scripture into a Reissbuch" (Noonan). The work is divided into four parts. The first deals with the travels from the Old Testament, starting with a description and a woodcut plan of Jerusalem. Two other woodcut folding plates show the Temple of Solomon and the route the Jews took from Egypt to the Holy Land. The second part explains the Biblical currencies and units of measurement. With 2 figures in the plates coloured by an early hand. Mottled, tanned sheepskin (ca. 1730?), gold-tooled spine. [8], 179, [1 blank] pp. plus tables and plates. Besides numerous fortification plans, profiles, sections and perspective views, the plates show bridges, gates, barriers, shelters, tools for digging, construction and demolition, a level, a battering ram, a windlass, a wheelbarrow, artillery, fences and a horse-powered Archimedes's screw for pumping water, while three plates show the arrangement of troops' quarters in camp. While some of the fortification plans are theoretical, others show the fortifications of cities of the Low Countries and Rheinland during the Eighty Years' War, including Antwerp, Wesel and Heusden. The text is divided into three "books", the first covering the origins, development and most recent Dutch improvements in the art of fortification, the second systematically presenting the various forms of fortification in a wide variety of shapes, and the third on offensive and defensive tactics of siege warfare as well as the furnishing and maintena … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary calf, rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. [16], 156, [2], [2 blank]; [40], 346, [6] pp. Ad 1: First edition of a work on God's creation of Earth, by the well-known Portuguese rabbi, writer and printer Menasseh Ben Israel (1604-1657), who established the first Jewish printing office in the Netherlands. The work presents 30 questions, or "problems", concerning God's creation of the Earth, which Menasseh tries to answer and explain, citing or referring to passages of the Tenach. Problems include "on which day were demons created?" and "was there another world or earth before God created this one?". The preliminaries including an important poem by Caspar Barlaeus, which caused the Amsterdam authorities to consider the reintroduction of censorship for Jewish publications. As this didn't happen, Barlaeus's poem can be seen as an indicator of the relationship between Jews and Christians, and the religious tolerance in Amsterdam during the Golden Age.Ad 2: First edition of a work on the resurrection of the dead by the same author. Half calf (ca. 1830s), with the binder's stamp on an endleaf (F. DUQUESNE À GAND). 136, [1], [1 blank]; [30] pp. Second known copy of the third edition (1635) of a rare satirical Dutch adaptation (first and second editions 1634) of a moralistic story in Latin by Filippo Beroaldo (1453-1505), possibly intended in this adaptation to satirize the Princes of Orange. The quotations from classical sources are given in Latin, each followed by a Dutch verse translation that takes some liberties with the text. Pieter Nootmans (active 1627-1635) contributed a verse about the book, printed on the back of the title-page. Following the main text is a drinking song by H. Rulant (active 1632-1634), with its own part-title, which had been published separately in 1632. We have located only one other copy of the present edition, in the library of Tresoar in Leeuwarden. The British Library database of bindings includes one binding by this Ghent binder. HAEFTEN, Benedictus van.
Regia via crucis. Antwerp, Balthasar Moretus (Officina Plantiniana), 1635. 8vo (18 x 11.5 x 4 cm). With engraved title-page showing Christ, Saint Teresa of Avila and 2 unidentified men and 38 full-page emblematic engravings. Richly gold-tooled calf (ca. 1665), each board with the arms of (apparently) Abbot Placidus Buechauer (1611-1669) of Kremsmünster, gilt and elaborately gauffered edges. XL, 404, [26], [2 blank] pp. First edition (first issue), the only edition in the original Latin, of a lovely devotional emblem book with an engraved title-page and 38 engraved emblems, all on the theme of the holy cross, all engraved by Cornelis Galle the elder (1576-1650), at least the title-page after a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1648). The history of the present copy is unusually interesting and well documented. The first documented owner was Jakob Adalbert Schrenk(1634-1674) best known as a composer of church music. The 1650 inscription on the title-page shows that when he was 15 or 16 he gave it to Gotthard Freyd, then also at Kremsmünster. The book found its way to the Abbot at Kremsmünster, Placidus Buechauer (1611-1669), who had it splendidly bound before his 1669 death. With water stains at the head of one quire and the half-title speckled with ink(?), but generally in very good condition. The binding shows a few small wormholes, minor cracks or small abrasions and lacks the ties, but is still very good, with the tooling well preserved. Funck p. 328; Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 271; Praz, p. 361; STCV 6843143.

During the 80 Years War (1566–1648), on the night of 27/28 July 1635, Spanish forces took => the “impregnable” Schenkenschans fort by surprise, overpowering its meager cadre of defenders (120 in total) to capture it. Strategically situated on an island at the confluence of the Rhine and the Waal rivers, it was => one of the most famous “star” forts of the era. This illustrated broadside was written and published in Madrid in the flush of that victory. Above a prose description of the history of the fort and the successful Spanish assault on it is => a large two-part engraving of it (20 x 22 cm, 7.75" x 8.625"). The topmost part presents a view of the fort from the far bank of the Rhine and, below that and above the prose, is a birds-eye view. At the very bottom of the sheet is a key to the fort's principal buildings and the locations important in its taking. The attribution of this engraving to Beer is based on the line in it that reads “Vendese en casa de Cornelio de Beer pintor. Enfrente de las Casas del Duque de Lerma.” Beer (1585–1651) was a North Netherlandish painter, engraver (printmaker), publisher, and art dealer. The joy of the Spanish surprise success that is embodied here did not last long: Beginning on 30 July and continuing until 30 April of 1636, the occupying Spanish defenders were unable to be reprovisioned by their army and were under continual, merciless bombardment from combined Dutch … [Click Below for Full Description]

Swan, John
Buck and Daniel, Printers to the University of Cambridge, 1635. Cambridge, octavo (14 by 18 cm), [xvi], 504, [26] p., including title page, engraved pictorial frontispiece title page, solar system text figure, and index at rear. ***CONTENT: John Swan, an English doctor and clergyman, prepared this popular treatise that went through several later editions. The work is a curious amalgam of the scientific knowledge of the day presented within the framework of theological doctrine. The volume is divided into sections corresponding with the six days of the Creation, with discussions of Earth's origin, astronomy, meteorology, earthquakes, minerals, precious stones, fossils, and metals, herbs and plants (including tobacco), animal life, medical matters, and much more. The work includes valuable factual information as well as amusing superstition and erroneous beliefs. Swan suggests that America was once a great land that "Plato calleth the Atlantic Island", that sunk beneath the sea and disappeared; he reports that mermaids and mermen "seem to me the most strange fish in the waters." Did you know that amethyst has the power to resist drunkenness? ***CONDITION: The volume is complete, and includes the often-lacking pictorial extra title page. The 4-page dedication leaves, however, are supplied in facsimile. The book is in near Fine condition, attractively bound in 20th c. 3/4 blue morocco and blue cloth by Baynton of Bath, England. The backstrip has five raised bands and three gilt-lettered compartments. The covers are very clean and well preserved, with only mild rubbing to the ex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jansen, Cornelius, theologian and bishop of Ypres (1585-1638).
1635. Folio. 1¾ pp. Unpublished letter to the jurist Gérard de Courselle (Corselius), regarding a controversy at the Leuven "Collegium Baianum": "[...] - This letter was hitherto not traceable, but was mentioned in a letter that Jansen wrote to Corselius on the same day (cf. Orcibal no. 205). Extremely rare. - Upper and lower edges untrimmed; browned and spotty at the right edge, otherwise in good condition. Not in: Jean Orcibal, Correspondance de Jansénius. Scottish Binding
London: Printed by T[homas] C[otes] for the Company of Stationers, 1635. Very good. 16mo. Collation: A-2E8, COMPLETE. 439, [9] pp. Final two gatherings waterstained, fols. E3 and R5 partially torn away with loss of some shoulder notes. Bound in contemporary British (Scottish?) brown calf, lacking first binder's blank, worn and shaken but unsophisticated. Preserved in a brown cloth case. Early Scottish bindings are rare, and the paucity of published examples renders the identification of particular workshops extremely difficult, in some instances -- as here -- nearly impossible. In time, as more Scottish examples are discovered and published, the present binding could certainly be linked to others. Whereas the forwarding of the present binding is good, the finishing is decidedly provincial (the design on the front cover is more like an off-axis parallelogram). That all the edges of the textblock are gilt attests to the fact that this was an expensive commission for the binder. We believe that he was Scottish, but cannot confirm this. In bibliography, as in other disciplines, it is dangerous to hazard a guess, but having studied the history of bookbinding for more than 30 years, we feel it appropriate to state that this binding "definitely looks Scottish." We note with great interest the fact that ESTC reports a copy of this edition of the Psalms in the most unlikely place, namely a remote Scottish hamlet called Innerpeffray by Crieff Library (Perth and Kinross); founded in 1680, it was the first lending library in Scotland and is still open to the public (sic!) Contemporary calf, old reback with gilt foliate motifs to compartments, covers ruled in gilt, gilt centrepieces to covers bordered by initials "A.A", red edges. Somewhat rubbed, especially to reback, light wear at tips, tiny chip at fore edge of pp. 1/2, contents clean. A very good copy, retaining attractive contemporary covers. Fourth edition, following the first of 1633. The book - all editions were published posthumously - was enormously popular, with six editions by 1641. "Herbert's English poetry, despite its entanglement with his more partisan personal reputation, was enormously popular. The Temple... appealed to a readership spanning the political and ecclesiastical spectrum: Charles I read Herbert's poems when imprisoned in Carisbrooke Castle before his execution, while at the same time The Temple was undoubtedly admired by at least one of the regicides (Herbert's own stepfather) and recommended as devotional reading by the chaplain to Oliver Cromwell, Peter Sterry" (ODNB). Herbert's influence was enduring, including contemporary imitators such as Harvey and Ralph Knevet, and admirers such as Cardell Goodman, Richard Crashaw and Henry Vaughan. The early American poets Edward Taylor and Philip Pain both show his influence. Coleridge's expressed admiration in the Biographia Literaria signalled a revival in the 19th century, and T. S.
