Heinsius, Daniel (ed.)
Lugduni Batavor (Leiden), Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1636.. 12° [20] ff., 411, 43 (index)] pp., 1 oversized, folding map. Engraved title page. Preliminary p. [40] and p. 92 printed in red and black. Contemporary vellum. Gilt spine. Label on spine. Triple gilt rules on covers. All edges gilt. First this Elzevier edition, being the first Heinsius edition. This edition suffers from some errors in the text, which Heinsius's son attributed to the printer. Provenience: Front free endpaper with librarystamps: "Bibliotheque de M. A. R. Courbonne - Fallitur hora legendo", "Egregios Cumulare - Libros - Praeclara Supellex - Bibliotheca Cortina". The printing house of Elzevier in the north of the Netherlands (established in Leiden) is often compared to that of Plantin in the Southern Netherlands (established in Antwerp). Both were very successful commercial establishments which carried on for generations in the same family. Elzevier texts, often in small formats, were distributed throughout Europe. This edition of Virgil was edited by Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), was professor of Greek and Latin at Leiden and one of the most famous Renaissance scholars.. Slightely worn.

Nemesius (Bishop of Emesa [now Homs])
Printed by Myles Flesher for Henry Taunton, 1636. title printed in red and black, without the initial blank, pp. [xlii], 661, 12mo, contemporary calf, sometime (?19th century) rebacked, black lettering piece, spine cracked down centre, upper joint cracked but binding firm, good. First edition, first issue, of the poet George Wither's translation, the first translation into English. Wither dedicated the translation to John Selden. The Nature of Man is primarily a theological work (and it is this which interested Wither), but also, importantly, is concerned with the 'interpretation of Greek scientific knowledge of the human body from the standpoint of Christian doctrine . According to Nemesius' doctrine, all sensory perceptions were received in the anterior - now called lateral - ventricles of the brain . The middle or, as it is now called, third ventricle was the region of the faculty of intellect. This is the area that was responsible for controlling the "judging, approving, refuting, and assaying" of the sensory perceptions which are gathered in the lateral ventricles. The third faculty was that of memory, the storehouse of all sensory perceptions after they had been judged by the faculty of intellect . The idea of ventricular localisation of the mental faculties in the form presented by Nemesius was first attacked in 1521 by Berengario da Carpi . Vesalius delivered the coup de grace to the entire theory in 1543' (DSB). (ESTC S113134; Pforzheimer 1085) [Attributes: First Edition]

QUIÑONES (Juan de) ].
Impressa en Valanson (Madrid?), por Jacome Corifio, 1636. - in-4. 99ff. (dont 98 numérotés). (1f.blanc). [Click Below for Full Description]

He taught philosophy at Monforte, theology at Salamanca, and "was from there called to the Imperial College of Madrid, where, by Royal Decree, he taught moral theology. Later, he was named censor to the Inquisition and confessor of de Olivares, the favorite of Philip IV, whom he followed when he was exiled from Madrid." Ripalda is described by Southwell as "religious, ... subtle in argument, sound in opinion, clear & focused in expression, and well-versed in St. Augustine & St. Thomas. According to Drews, no Jesuit ever occupied this chair at the University of Salamanca with more honor." Notably, Hurter considers Ripalda, along with Lugo, "first among the contemporary theologians of Spain, and perhaps of all Europe." [Perez Goyena. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA]. Scarce. John Gerard; Thomas Johnson
London: Adam Islip, Joice Norton & Richard Whitakers, 1636 Fair copy of the third edition of this important work, first published in 1597 and substantially revised by Thomas Johnson in 1633. This, published three years later, is his final revision. It lacks the full title page but a section of it has been pasted to the rear of the front board, indicating that it is a Johnson revision. Pagination checks confirm that it is the 1636 rather than the 1633 version. Gerard (1545-1611/12) superintended Lord Burlegh's gardens and had access to a wide variety of plant specimens, although, according to some sources, he was accused of plagiarising an earlier work by Dodoens. The book, greatly improved by Johnson's revisions, was actively used as a reference work up to and including the 19th century. In contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards. With part of the title page and a bookplate of Harry Arnold, Arnbarrow, pasted inside the front board. Complete apart from the title page and all but the first page of the english index - the remainder is supplied separately in facsimile. The latin index is complete but misbound. There are numerous mispaginations (common to this edition). With numerous plant engravings and decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. The binding is sound, but is worn to all surfaces and the spine has been relaid at some point. That repair is worn. Internally there is some browning to page edges and some nibbling and loss of page edges initially (principally the initial dedication pages) - particular at the bottom outer corners. The fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saltonstall, Charles
Lon., 1636.. b/w wood engravings and volvelle. First edition of a rare navigational text. Saltonstall was a captain in the West Indies trade and a teacher of mathematics at Tower Hill. This copy has the engraved title-page, but lacks the printed title page and portrait, as well as D2 (this page contained illustrations to be cut out and attached to the volvelle on D3, which is complete and in place. So, in a sense D2 is “there.” It has simply been put to its intended use.) STC 21640. A&W 3100. Complete textually. The engraved volvelle with two dials is immaculate and in perfect working order.

QUIÑONES (Juan de) ].
Impressa en Valanson (Madrid?), por Jacome Corifio, 1636. - in-4. 99ff. (dont 98 numérotés). (1f.blanc). Full modern calf to contemporary style, spine heavily gilt extra, gilt label, a.e.g. Engraved title, woodcut head and tail-pieces, and 24 full-page engravings, including a portrait, by Leonard Gaultier and Claude Mellon. Top margin of title shaved just slightly touching the plate mark, blank upper fore-corner of 2F5 torn away, two short marginal tears with obvious mends, terminal leaf creased, with mend at toe of blank verso along with some early ink scribbles, occasional tanning, minor discolorations, and inky finger smears, a few instances of early marginal annotations or underscores, early ink ownership signature of "Anne Duckett," with another obscured in a top margin by an early overlay; still, a good copy in an attractive period pastiche binding. With a 19th century bookplate, and considerable neatly penned learned comments on the retained earlier binder's blanks. First illustrated edition of this translation by Kingsmill Long, first published in 1625 under Seile's imprint. Although this edition is denoted the "Second Edition, Beautified with Pictures," there were prior reprinting/editions in 1628 and 1629. Barclay's prose romance was first printed in Paris, in Latin, in 1621, shortly after the author's death under suspicious circumstances. It "has been admired by Richelieu, Leibnitz, Jonson, Grotius, Pope, Cowper, Disraeli, and Coleridge ... Abraham Bosse (Tours 1604 circa ? Parigi 1676)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1636, firmato in lastra in basso. Opera molto rara.Bibliografia: Abraham Bosse savant graveur, p. 172, 142. Dimensioni 134x245 Etching and engraving, 1636. signed and dated on lower part. Magnificent work, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed inside the platemark but with the entire engraved part, minor repairs on the upper part, otherwise in good condition. This plate has been realized one year after the death of Callot; the post-mortem portrait has been very likely commissioned by Israel Henriet, the publisher. PAULINUS GOTHUS, Laurentius.
Strängnäs, Johannes L. Barkenius, 1636. 4:o. (20),+ 78,81-145,145-150,+ (1)+ 30, 32-414, 414-415,+ (16),+ (blank),+ 168,+ (15) s.
