Melchior TAVERNIER the Younger (1594 - 1665).
[Paris, circa ], 1636. Copper engraving, contemporarily trimmed to within platemark (Very Good, light toning along edges and tiny old repaired tears at upper edge), 40 x 53 cm (16 x 21 inches). "An extremely rare separately-issued plan of the Siege of Corbie (1636), a key event of the early period of the Franco-Spanish War (1635-59), issued by the French royal cartographer Melchior Tavernier the Younger. This fine map, exquisitely engraved by the French royal cartographer Melchior Tavernier the Younger, showcases the Siege of Corbie (1636), in the Somme region of Northern France. In the summer of 1636, a massive Spanish force swept into Northern France taking virtually all of the Northern defensive fortresses, including Corbie, which fell on August 7. However, the French regrouped and they mustered a large army of 52,000 troops under Gaston d'Orléans, the king’s brother, to retake Corbie. After an intense siege, the Spanish forces of 35,000 defenders surrendered on November 9, 1636, so ending any hopes Spain harboured of marching on Paris. The Franco-Spanish War (1635-59) was a conflict that grew out of the larger Thirty Y … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARITIME HISTORY - PRIVATEERING].
, . . Den Zeusen Beesem 1062; Knuttel 5221. Two dialogues discussing Dutch warships capturing Dunkirk privateers and merchant ships. Dunkirkers, serving the Spanish Navy, were a major threat to Dutch trade and shipping, taking hundreds of ships during the Dutch revolt. The present pamphlet discusses several commanders of warships, including the Zeeland captains Jacob Pense, Gerrit Verhagen, Jan Evertsen de Jonge and Jacob Verhelle, who captured no fewer than 30 Dunkirk ships in just one year. Jan Evertsen de Jonge was the son of the famous admiral Jan Evertsen, who had captured the infamous Duinkerk privateer Jacques Colaert in 1636 and later fought several battles in the first and second Anglo-Dutch war. The pamphlet concludes with a list of captured ships mentioned in the text. It seems to have been written to advocate the fitting out of more warships to protect Dutch (or more particularly Zeeland) trade.Spine damaged, otherwise in very good condition.

QUIÑONES (Juan de) ].
Impressa en Valanson (Madrid?), por Jacome Corifio, 1636. - in-4. 99ff. (dont 98 numérotés). (1f.blanc). [Click Below for Full Description]

Illustrated by 43 woodcuts in text. "In his Gemmarum et Lapidum Historia, Boodt made the first attempt at a systematic description of minerals, dividing the minerals into great and small, rare and common, hard and soft, combustible and incombustible, transparent and opaque. He uses a scale of hardness expressed in three degrees and notes the crystalline forms of some minerals (triangular, quadratic, and hexangular). Boodt criticizes some of the views of Aristotle, Pliny, Paracelsus, and others. He also mentions atoms. He enumerates about 600 minerals that he knows from personal observation, and describes their properties, values, imitations, and medical applications. Otherwise a fine and unstained copy. ----VD17 39:113722S; Wellcome I, 5928. - FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (without errata), of exceptional rarity (only one copy recorded at auction in the past 50 years). The physician and scholar Daniel Sennert (1572-1637) united various atomistic theories in the early 17th century and advocated the spread of atomism. Jungius further developed the ideas he published. In his Hypomnemata physicae (Notes on Physics), Sennert summarized his theories, emphasizing the imperceptibility of the 'minima', but referring to observations that suggest their existence. When water evaporates, its particles do not disintegrate, but become undetectably small. His efforts to unite corpuscular theories with the Aristotelian theory of matter brought him recognition in the course of his life, but was later criticized. The assumption that the original atoms are linked to hardly divisible prima mixta influenced the teachings of Robert Boyle (1627-91) and Joachim Jungius (1587-1657) "(see NDB XXIV, 262 f.). GERARD, John.
London: Adam Islip, Joice Norton, and Richard Whitakers, 1636. Thick folio, with more than 2500 woodcut illustrations of plants, as well as numerous other woodcut decorations; contemporary sprinkled calf, spine ornately gilt in wide compartments, red morocco label; armorial bookplate of "Walford" and 17th-century signature of Elizabeth Taylor of Wimbish Hall. A splendid copy of one of the most famous English herbals, here in the second printing of the best edition, Johnson's 'very much enlarged and amended' version which first appeared in 1633. This massive herbal made the barber-surgeon and horticulturist Gerard (1545-1612) famous when it was first published in 1597, and it remained highly esteemed for more than 200 years. Gerard's work was based on his experience in his own substantial gardens and as superintendent of several others in and around London, including various properties owned by William Cecil, first Baron Burghley, whose gardens were famous for their variety of plants and trees. Despite claims that his work was derivative, 'Gerard contributed greatly towards the advancement of the knowledge of plants in England, and in his Herball described and illustrated several hundreds of... native plants, including about 182 which were additional to those recorded in earlier works... ' (Henrey). In 1632 the successors of Gerard's first publisher commissioned Thomas Johnson (d. 1644), the well-known apothecary and botanist, to prepare a second edition. He did this so well and added so much (a valuable comprehensive historical introduction as well as half again as many wo … [Click Below for Full Description]
