Boodt, A., De
Lugdunum Batavorum, Joannis Maire, 1636. Two parts in one. Small 8vo (17.0 x 10.7 cm). Title page with wood-engraved vignette; [vi], 576 pp., [xxi] pp., two folded wood-engraved tables and numerous woodcuts in the text (among which the famous full page: "de Crystallo et pseudo Adamante". Contemporary vellum with manuscript title on the spine. Second edition of De Boodt's fundamental manual on mineralogy and gemology, first published in Hanau (Germany), in 1609. De Boodt (1550-1632) was court physician to Rudolf II of Bohemia. He was the first to attempt a systematic description of minerals, noting the crystalline form, hardness, optical properties and combustibility. "In his work Boodt...enumerated 600 minerals that he knows from personal observation, and describes their properties, values, imitations and medical applications. There are also tables of values of diamonds according to their size and a short description of the polishing of precious stones" (DSB). This edition, published shortly after De Boodt's death, was edited and corrected by the Leiden medical doctor, Adriaan Toll. The woodcuts illustrate crystals, gemstones, fossils and a variety of jeweller's cutting and polishing equipment. A third edition, also edited by Toll, was published in Leiden in 1647. In the titel, the word "Gemmarum" is spelled "Gemmarvm" with a "v", whereas "lapidum" is spelled with a "u". Small water stain in right top corner of first 100 pages, slight age toning, otherwise a handsome, clean copy. DSB II, pp. 292-293; Sinkankas, 778; Ward and Carozzi, 252. Very good. [PHARMACOPOEIA - AMSTERDAM]. [TULP, Nicolaes and Pieter BERNAGIE (translator)].
Daems & Vandewiele, Noord- en zuidned. stedelijke pharmacopeeën, p. 58 (1 copy); V. Eeghen & V.d. Kellen 486; STCN (same copy, lacking frontispiece). Rare fourth edition of a Dutch translation of the 1636 Amsterdam Pharmacopoea. Unlike the original Latin edition, the Dutch translation not only lists ingredients, but also provides recipes to prepare the medicines. The numbers for quantities, as the publisher notes in the foreword, are spelled out to avoid any (fatal) problems arising from typesetting errors. A list of medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final page. The original Latin Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis, the first Dutch pharmacopoeia, with recipes for nearly 200 medicines, was compiled anonymously by Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674) by order of the city of Amsterdam, to serve as an official legal standard for the correct preparation of numerous medicines. Several cities in the southern Low Countries and Germany, and even London, had produced pharmacopoeias before any Dutch city and Tulp based his on those published in Augsburg, Cologne and London, primarily on the 1622 edition of the Pharmacopoea Augustana (providing about 85% of the content), with some material from the 1627 Dispensatorium Coloniense and the 1627 edition of the Pharmacopoea Londinensis.Browned and spotted throughout, with a few small holes and with a large water stain in the lower margin. The binding soiled, with a water stain at the foot of the boards and a crack at the foot of the spine. Quire F loose in binding. A fair copy.

Second edition of one of the earliest, if not the first, of maxims of the English Law (Rees 1: 20). CBEL 1: 870. ' The excellence of that which we possess makes us grieve that we have so small a proportion of that which the author designed: 'Though some great masters of the Law did outgo him in bulk...yet in the science of the grounds, and mysteries of the Law, he was exceeded by none'--Preface to Blackstone's Anal. (Allibone, 90). None of Bacon's legal works were published before his death in 1626; the first edi...

Le Roy,H
Greece: A Paris " "Chez N Langlois rue Saint Jaques àla Victoire" c1640-60. Copper engraved map of Greece after Ortelius by Henri Le Roy. Original outline colour; verso blank. Decorative title cartouche and scale. The map by Henri Le Roy seems to have first been published by Michel Van Lochom in 1636 and then by J Boisseau in 1643 in his " Tresor des Cartes Géographiques". Thereafter the plate seems to have passed through a number of hands including that of Pierre Mariette who was stepfather to Nicolas Langlois the present publisher. Dark impression; signs of former framing, leading to toning and tape to edges on verso; dampstain to lower margin; centrefold split, due to removal of guard, repaired to verso. Henri Le Roy (1579-1652) was a Parisian engraver. Little is known about Le Roy, however the British Museum have a set of plates by him depicting insects "Le Jardin de Sauterelles et Papillons," France, c1650 which they believe were intended to serve as a pattern for craftsmen working in the decorative arts such as embroidery or metalwork. The Victoria and Albert Museum also have a further series of engravings" this series of seven frieze designs, which could have been put to use as designs for architectural ornaments, textiles or other objects" Both of these fit with the publisher Michel van Lochom "Graveur et Imprimaeur du Roy" who published a number of works on design and ornamentation and may well have asked Le Roy an engraver known to him to copy Ortelius map as interest increased in cartography in France. "The practice of plagiarizing prints or maps seems to have be … [Click Below for Full Description]

KIRCHER, Athanasius
Woodcut vignette on title, woodcut illus. in the text, & many exotic type fonts used. 12 p.l., 338 pp. 4to, late 18th-cent. half calf & marbled boards (some browning as is usual with this book), spine gilt, black morocco lettering piece on spine. Rome: Propaganda Fide, 1636. First edition. This present work is "the first Coptic grammar to appear in the West, [it] was for centuries the basis for Coptic studies, along with Kircher's later work Lingua aegyptiaca restituta (1643). Kircher had encountered hieroglyphs during his tertianship (a one-year period of religious study in preparation for the ministry) in Speier, and he was convinced - correctly - that Coptic was a late vestige of ancient Egyptian. While at Avignon he was given several Coptic manuscripts by his friend and patron Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc. Later in Rome Kircher acquired an Arabic-Coptic vocabulary brought from Egypt by Pietro della Valle. On the basis of these, and with Peiresc's encouragement, Kircher compiled the Prodromus. As the title reveals, it was to be a precursor of a later work on the Egyptian language, perhaps the Lingua aegyptiaca restituta. In both works he stresses the importance of Coptic for interpreting hieroglyphics. Because 'things Egyptian' were the rage in seventeenth-century Europe, the Prodromus attained immediate popularity and firmly established Kircher's reputation as a scholar… "Type fonts include Greek, Syriac, Arabic, Hebrew, Estranghelo, Samaritan, Armenian, Chaldean, Rashi, Amharic, 'Saracen,' hieroglyphic, and of course Coptic - a tour de force of seventeenth-century … [Click Below for Full Description]
