SANDYS, George.
London 1636. Small 8vo., pp. [14], 224, 227-258, 257-271 (text complete despite pagination); internally a very crisp, fresh copy; in contemporary black morocco, gilt with a double frame, fleurons to inner corners and a central wreath, spine gilt, gilt edges, ties wanting; very slightly rubbed; ownership inscriptions of A. Gowran to title-page and of the judge and collector of Elizabethan literature John Duke Coleridge to endpapers, with the latter's note that it was bought at the 1871 sale of the library of S. John Simeon; bookplates of the antiquary John Adair Hawkins and of Robert S. Pirie.First edition, a fine copy of these psalm paraphrases by the poet and adventurer George Sandys (1578-1644) who was hailed by Dryden as 'the best versifier' of his age. Sandys's Paraphrase upon the Psalmes is one of the most highly regarded collections of early Biblical verse paraphrase, notable for its anti-Calvinist theology and its effective combination of 'a formal delight in "the beauty of holiness" with personal devotion' (Oxford DNB). The commendatory poem is by Lucius Cary, Viscount Falkland, the founder of the Great Tew Circle, who was an enthusiastic advocate of Sandys's religious poetry. Sandys is best remembered as a traveller, first in the Middle East, and later in America as the treasurer of the newly-established colony of Virginia. After the colony was almost wiped out by Native Americans, Sandys himself led the counter attack. In quieter moments in Virginia he found the time to compose his famous translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, which influenced Milton, Pope, and Dryd … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ogilvie comments, "De Bie wanted to do for the French monarchy what sixteenth century antiquarians had done for the Roman emperors: produce a series of metallic portraits and reverses that would illustrate the kings of France, from Charlemagne to the present, and their noble deeds. Faced with a distinct lack of such medals, especially for the Carolingians and early Capetians, De Bie made them up, covering up his inventions (not entirely successfully) by emphasizing the research he had conducted to find them. Hannibal (um 247 v. Chr. In Karthago - 183 v. Chr. In Bithynien):
Fernandi Cardinalis Infantis triumphalis introitus, Jan van Meurs Antwerpen 1636. Copper engraving at the upper margins with two bigger brown spots but overall in fine condition. Plate number 15 from: Willem Beke, Sereniss. Fernandi Cardinalis Infantis triumphalis introitus, published in Antwerp by Jan van Meurs in 1636.] CALLOT, Jacques (circa 1592-1635)
Paris: Israël Henriet, 1636. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Folio (275 x 185 mm). 488 etchings (215 x 120 mm and similar) on 124 sheets including title with the arms of Richelieu, frontispiece, dedication and text. Contemporary vellum. Good impressions of the second states (the frontispiece third state), watermarks Posthorn (similar to Lieure 47). Occasional very pale foxing and toning at the sheet edges, the title-page worn, otherwise in good condition. Provenance: purchased from Davis, 1956. FIRST EDITION, second states. This is one of Callot's final works, dedicated to Cardinal Richelieu. Callot worked on the series from 1632 to 1635, dying with the plates still in his possession. It is characteristic of his late works made at Nancy, which were mostly of a religious nature. The plates here "differed from his contemporaneous work in method, for often they were almost completely drawn in line, with very little shading ... The frontispiece is Callot's Tintoretto-like Assumption of the Virgin" (Bechtel, Jacques Callot, 1955, p. 32, pls. 173-5). Lieure 807-1295.

Lokman.
Leiden, Jean Maire, 1636. - 4to. 60, (2) pp. Woodcut vignette to title. Text in Latin and Arabic. Early 19th century boards covered with blue brocade paper. Second edition, following Erpenius's 1615 editio princeps. - Lokman was a legendary sage of the pre-Muhammedanian era, occasionally said to have been king of Yemen, a prophet, or an Abessinian slave. This late 13th-c. adaptation of a Syrian translation of Aesop's Fables was attached to his name. Since their first publication in Europe in 1615, the "Fables" constitute an obligatory passage for learning Arabic, which explains the proliferation of versions (including those for school use). The collection was edited by Thomas Erpenius (1584-1624), professor of oriental languages at Leiden. In 1613, after his return from Paris, he set up a private press with types cut specially for him. - Some fingerstaining, waterstaining and duststaining; lower corner of t. p. torn off (no loss to text); an early student's pen scribblings on title page, and a later owner's pencil notes in Arabic in margins and on final flyleaf. Zenker I, 627. Schnurrer 220. Landwehr F137. OCLC 85371352. Cf. Fück 65f. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
