Kitab 'Aja'ib al-maqdur fi aghbar Timur] Vitae & rerum gestarum Timuri, qui vulgo Tamerlanes dicitur, historia.

Leiden, Elsevier, 1636. - 4to. (8), 448 pp. With half-title printed in dark blue and red, title-page printed in red and black within woodcut borders and and leaf *3 printed in red, dark blue, and black. Later stiff paper wrappers, manuscript title on spine. First Arabic edition of an important eyewitness account of the life of Tamerlane (Timur), the successful and barbaric 14th-century Turkish conqueror, printed entirely in Arabic. "An interesting feature of the book is the use of blue ink for the printing of the word 'Tamerlanis' (between two red lines) on the half-title, as well as for one typographical ornament on leaf 3 recto" (Smitskamp). The text is based on the original Arabic manuscript, completed in 1437-1438, by the Syrian author Ahmad lbn 'Arabshah, secretary of Sultan Ahmad of Baghdad. In the 16th century Timur was made famous in Europe through Christopher Marlowe's play Tamburlaine (1590). The present work was edited and prefaced by Jacob Golius. The Arabic manuscript used by him is still preserved at Leiden University library and contains many notes in his hand. A French translation by Pierre Vattier appeared in 1658. - With an unidentified library stamp on title-page. Some leaves heavily foxed and a few small spots. Overall a good copy. De Nave 90. Fück 81f. Lambrecht 1774. Schnurrer 166. Smitskamp 313. STCN (8 copies). Willems 434. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Cartouches]. Serie di 12 incisioni raffiguranti cornici.

''Ag.no Mitelli / Ag.no Parisino e Gio. Battista Negroponti / Forma in Bolognia''. S.d. (1636 ca), - in-folio piccolo (mm 254x191), legatura coeva in cartone rustico. Biblioteca dell'Archiginnasio in Bologna, ivi Zanichelli 1931). Berlin Katalog 563. Guilmard, Maîtres ornemanistes, p. 314, n. 26. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Elementa Jurisprudentiae, Definitionibus, Regulis & Sententiis...

1636. The First English Writer on Jurisprudence Zouch Richard [1590-1661]. Elementa Jurisprudentiae, Definitionibus, Regulis & Sententiis Selectioribus Juris Civilis, Illustrata; Accesserunt Descriptiones Juris & Judicii, Sacri, Militaris, Et Maritimi. Amsterdam: Sumptibus Joh. Nevilsoni, [1652]. [x], 439 pp. Four parts with continuous pagination and divisional title pages. 12mo. (5" x 2-3/4"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, lettering piece and gilt ornaments to spine. Light toning to text. A Handsome copy. * Third edition, an issue of the Elzevier edition of 1652 with a cancel title page. One of England's greatest civilians, Zouch was an advocate of Doctors' Commons, Judge of the High Court of Admiralty and Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford. He published treatises on a broad range of legal topics and is best known for his contributions to international law. He is equally important as the first English writer to publish works on jurisprudence. Elementa Jurisprudentiae is an ambitious general study that lays out a general theory of general principles applicable to all branches and systems of legal science. The second, third and fourth parts, Descriptio Juris et Judicii Sacri; Ad Quam Leges, Quae Religionem, Et Piam Causam Respiciunt, Referuntur, Descriptio Juris & Judicii Militaris; Ad Quam Leges, Quae rem Militarem et Ordinem Personarum and Descriptio Juris et Judicii Maritimi; Ad Quam quae Navigationem et Negotiationem Maritimam Respiciunt, Referuntur are distinct essays on topics in English ecclesiastical law, the laws of war and military discipline and laws concerning ships and sea-borne cargo. The latter two essays also deal with international law. The first two editions were published in Oxford in 1629 and 1636. The following two editions, with different additional contents, were issued in Holland in 1652 and 1665. According to Willems, some copies of this title were printed by other printers, some with cancel title pages, others with counterfeit Elzevier title pages.         HISTOIRE DU CANADA ET VOYAGES QUE LES FRERES MINEURS RECOLLECTS Y ONT FAICTS POUR LA CONVERSION DES INFIDELLES...

Paris: Chez Claude Sonnius, 1636. Late 19th-century dark green morocco, richly tooled in gilt, a.e.g., by W. Pratt. Bookplates on front pastedown. Front flyleaf detached. Upper fore-corner of title restored, headline of Gg3 shaved. Internally clean. A fine copy. The E.D. Church copy of the extraordinarily rare first edition of this early account of Canada. Sagard was a Recollect missionary who spent 1623-24 in Canada as a missionary to the Huron nation. This work is considered an extension of his earlier GRAND VOYAGE... detailing "the travels and missionary labors of the Recollects among the Indians of Canada..." - Field. His book, based largely on his own experiences and those of his associates, as well as contemporary letters and documents, is considered to be the main authority for the history of the first Recollect mission in Canada in the 1615-29, and the main source for Indian life and relations with the French which does not stem from the Jesuits. "Sagard and Champlain were the first explorers to give any very definite statements about the Huron Indian country and what they had learned from these Indians about the Great Lakes Country" - Greenly. This issue with the music on pages [2]-[5] of the eight unnumbered pages of plates usually inserted between pages 312 and 313 of the text. Pages [1], [6]-[8] of the plates are blank. Also included is his dictionary of the Huron language, a collection of French expressions translated into Huron, to be used as a manual by traders and missionaries. This copy from the collection of Elihu Dwight Church (1835-1908), a New York collector whose library is celebrated by bibliographers George Watson Cole and Henrietta Barlett in the Church Catalogue. This work is very rare, with only one other copy of this work appearing at auction in at least the last forty years. This was the Harmsworth copy, sold at Sotheby's in 1947, and reappearing in the same rooms in 1988. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 636/95. GAGNON 3121. TPL 6310. STREIT II:2508. HARRISSE 62.         The historie of the life and death of Mary Stuart queene of Scotland

London: Pr. by John Haviland for William Sheares 12mo (14.3 cm, 5.6"). Frontis., add. engr. t.-p., [20], 493, [1] pp. (pagination skips 234/35, repeats 243/44).. 1636 Camden's biography of Mary, Queen of Scots, here in English in its second edition, following the first of 1624. While this work is sometimes attributed entirely to William Udall, ESTC notes that it is largely Udall's translation of the relevant passages of Camden's important history Annales rerum Anglicarum et Hibernicarum regnante Elizabetha, published without crediting Camden — a historian, topographer, antiquary, and Clarenceux king-of-arms, noted for his Britannia as well as the Annales. As in other copies noted, leaf A1 is here cancelled and replaced by a bifolium bearing a portrait of Mary and an additional engraved title-page, the latter signed by William Marshall. Provenance: Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of F.B. Knox, with "Moveo et proficior" motto. Binding: Early 19th-century calf with covers framed in double gilt fillets and a blind roll, rebacked; spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Handsome marbled endpapers, and all edges gilt. Binding as above, with original silk bookmark present; edges rubbed, front cover with small inkspot. Front pastedown with bookplate as above. Several pencilled marginal annotations, two offset onto opposing pages. Waterstaining to lower portions of some leaves; a few lower corners bumped. A nice copy of the attractive and uncommon second edition.

Mineralogia, sive Naturalis Philosophiae Thesauri, in quibus Metallicae Concretionis medicatorúmque fossilium miracula, terrarum pretium, colorum & pigmentorum apparatus, concretorum succorum virtus, lapidum atque gemmarum dignitas continentur.

Jacques e Pierre Prost,, Lyon 1636 - In folio (mm365x235); Pagg. Cesi (1581-1630), was a Jesuit professor at Modena and Parma. Sinkankas 1221:" Large compilation of mineralogical knowledge, with much on paleontological specimen as then known, and also on gemstones.Apparently he is the first author to employ the term "mineralogy" The text in five books, treats mineralogy in general, the earths, petrified juices (salts, organics), stones and germs, and metals".Hoover 214.         Manchester Al Mondo. Contemplatio Mortis, & Immortalitatis. The third impression much inlarged.[In English]

John Haviland for Francis Constable, London 1636 - 12mo. pp. [iv] 211 [iii]. Roman letter. Text within double frame, woodcut initials and typographical headpieces. A little age-yellowing, occasional small oil stains and paperflaws. A good copy in contemporary sharkskin, a.e.g., extremities lightly worn, hinges weakening but sound. Francis Quincey's faded autograph 'This Book December 1791' in blank portions of title, a few pencil underlinings in margins. An early edition of Montagu's popular contemplative work in an unusual early binding. Despite the Latin title, the text is in English and was intended for general readership. Montagu, Earl of Manchester, was one of Charles I's most trusted and loyal advisers. Educated at Christ's, Cambridge, he was successively Chief Justice of the King's Bench (in which capacity he passed sentence of death on Sir Walter Raleigh) and Lord High Treasurer of England. He was created 1st Earl of Manchester in 1626. The present work, his reflections on mortality, was first published anonymously in 1631, and "exhibits much learning, patristic and philosophical" (DNB). It proved highly popular and ran to 15 editions by 1690. This edition, although stated the third, is in fact (according to STC) the fifth. STC 18027a; Lowndes IV, p. 1462; not in Pforzheimer or Grolier. English [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Jésus crucifié. Poëme

Paris, Jean Camusat 1636 - Peu commun. London: Printed by the Assignes of Iohn More Esquire, 1636. [viii], 28, [3], 19-17 [i.e. 27], 41-96, 96-302, [1] ff. Pagination irregular, collates complete. Main text in parallel columns. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind rules and corner fleurons to boards, rebacked retaining spine with raised bands and lettering piece, endleaves renewed. Light rubbing and a few inkstains to boards, corners bumped and somewhat worn. Recent period-style three-quarter calf over marbled boards, early hand-lettered title to fore-edge of text block, title page re-hinged. Moderate toning, faint inkspots to a few leaves, some offsetting and edgewear to preliminaries and final few leaves. Early owner signatures to title page and verso, a few page numbers corrected in an early hand, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Perforated stamp to title page. A nice copy in a handsome binding. * Later edition. English and Law French in parallel columns. First published in 1527 by John Rastell, this was both the first English dictionary and first English law dictionary. It was originally written in Law French with the Latin title Expositiones Terminorum Legum Anglorumae. Later editions were produced by his son, William. Quite popular with students and lawyers due to its clarity and concision, it went through at least twenty-five editions by 1721. A final reissue appeared in 1819. As Marvin observes, it is a useful dictionary because it "reflects the common law at the close of the year-book period with much fidelity.": Legal Bibliography 599.         The historie of the life and death of Mary Stuart queene of Scotland.

London: Pr. by John Haviland for William Sheares 12mo (14.3 cm, 5.6").

"This celebrated encyclopedic work, by far the most thorough and complete up to date, easily surpasses Bacci, Marbod, and Leonardus in quantity and quality of information; it is further distinguished by its intimate knowledge of the art of the lapidary and must therefore be regarded as the first treatise to offer more than the briefest of views of gem cutting" (Sinkankas 778, about the first edition from 1609). This edition was revised and enlarged by Adrian Toll, professor of medicine at Leyden. Many of the woodcuts were improved, and several of them appeared here for the first time. Canticum evangelium summam

John Norton for Robert Bird, London 1636 - NOT IN STC 8vo, pp (iv) 48 (ii) lacking initial leaf preceding t-p, certainly blank. Roman letter, decorative woodcut on t-p, woodcut initial & typographical ornaments, water stain to upper outer corners, mostly marginal and quite light, a little browning towards gutter on some ll. A good copy in contemp limp vellum, two panels ruled on covers, inner containing central ornament, all gilt. So far as we can tell the unique copy of the 1636 issue or edition of Bradshawe's only published work. Two other 'copies' are recorded, both apparently dated 1635. The Harley copy now in the BL but comprising the t-p only and the Huth copy, subsequently Edward Almack's, now lost. Accordingly the present copy seems to be the only surviving example of the text. Bradshawe (fl. c.1635) was a fellow of Balliol College Oxford and connected to Sir Arthur and Lady Margaret Mainwaring to whom the work is dedicated. Sir Arthur was a well-known figure at the Court of James I and a favourite of Prince Henry, becoming Lieutenant of Windsor Forest as well as a member of Parliament. He was the lover of Anne Tenant, hanged in 1613 for her part in the Overbury murder. About Bradshawe nothing more seems to be known and this little book of neo-Latin verse based on extracts from the Gospels is similarly unnoticed by the bibliographers. Why it has not survived is a mystery worthy of scholarly investigation. Not in STC. see STC3533.5 for the 1635 issue. No copies in U.S. T-p only at B.L; one known copy 'lost'. And Specially Ordered and Disposed for the Use and Benefit of all Benevolent Sea-Farers, Within His Majesties Dominions of Great Brittain, Ireland, And the Adjacent Isles Thereof. London: Printed by the Assignes of Ioane Man, and Benjamin Fisher, 1636. [16], 25 [i.e. 253], [3] pp. Octavo (5-1/2" x 3-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, gilt-edged raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Moderate toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, minor chipping to centers of fore-edges of pp. 109-146, some soiling and edgewear to title page, milder edgewear to following three leaves. Faint underlining and brackets in faint later pencil to a few leaves, interior otherwise clean. A nice copy of a scarce title. * Second and final edition. First published in 1613, this was the first comprehensive English manual of maritime law. Based in part on Welwood's earlier work, The Sea-Law of Scotland (1590), the first treatise on maritime law written in the British Isles, his Abridgement was a response to a request by King James I to refute an argument in the fifth chapter of Grotius's, Mare Liberum (1609). According to Grotius, the king did not have the right to exclude foreign vessels from fisheries along the British and Irish coasts. Quoting extensively from biblical and Roman sources, Welwood defended the right of a coastal state to control adjacent waters. This was the only critique of Mare Liberum that provoked a reply by Grotius, Defensio Capitis Quinti Maris Liberi Oppugnati a Guilielmo Welwodo (1615, published 1872). Later, Grotius changed his mind about Welwood's critique; in De Iure Belli ac Pacis (1625), he argues that nations are allowed to possess coastal waters. Both editions of the Abridgment are rare in the tra [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A nice copy in a handsome binding. $750.
