MONTAIGNE Michel Eyquem de.
Jean Camusat, 1635. In-folio (368 x 236 mm), 20 ff. n. ch., 871 pp., 1 p. n. ch., 11 ff. n. ch. [Click Below for Full Description]

AGOP, Joannes (Yovhannès KONSTANDNOWPOLSECÍ).
Salmaslian 89. The first and only editions of three complementary manuals concerning the Armenian language and grammar, in matching format and layout, all three by the Armenian priest Johannes Agop (1635-1691) in Venice, born in Istanbul. They were printed and published by the Propaganda Fide in Rome, established in 1623 to promote the Catholic religion, primarily outside Europe. The Propaganda Fide established its own printing office in 1626 and stocked it with a wide variety of non-Latin printing types, many newly cut for them. Like many of their publications, the present ones were intended in part for missionaries working in the Ottoman Empire, the Caucasas and Iran, but also in part for Christians who lived in these regions. For that reason Agop wrote not only an Armenian grammar with the instructive text in Latin (ad 1), but also a Latin grammar with the instructive text in Armenian (ad 2) and a work entirely in Armenian on the "purity" of the Armenian language (ad 3). These linguistic publications by Agop still are important for the history of the Armenian language, being among the few on the subject published in the 17th century. With the armorial stamp of Cardinal Albani (1649-1721), from 1700 Pope Clement XI, on the title-page. A few quires toward the end of the Puritas linguae Armenicae are browned, but otherwise a very good copy, with only an occasional small marginal tear or very minor foxing. Three important and complementary sources for the Armenian language, formerly owned by Pope Clement XI.

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino"
1635. Acquaforte, 1631 – 1637 circa, monogrammata nell’imagine in basso a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Michel de MONTAIGNE
Seventh edition, partly original, published by Mademoiselle de Gournay after one of two copies of 1588 corrected and annotated by Montaigne. Montaigne's "daughter-in-alliance" has particularly treated this edition by reviewing her preface to the 1595 edition, which she has considerably increased. This is the first edition where the translated quotes are placed next to the text. It is illustrated with a frontispiece, unpublished, the first to present the weapons of Montaigne, bottom right, and the balance and its motto "What do I know." It is also the only edition in which the royal privilege is fully transcribed on the back of the last page of text, while the others show only an excerpt.Snacks in accordance with those of the National Library of Scotland and the British Library Oxford.Binding full brown sheepskin contemporary, back with five nerves adorned with 5 florets. Title piece of brown sheepskin, double golden thread framing boards. Wide wetting at the bottom right corner on the entire volume. Small work of verse towards p. 600. Pale brownish scattered. A slight lack in the external margin on sheet 13.Remarkable and important edition in the bibliography of the Essays. It is increased by more than a third according to Brunet, compared to editions published during the lifetime of Montaigne. Chez Jean Camusat à Paris 1635 in-folio (22,5x35cm) (42) 871 pp. (23) relié

Jansen, Cornelius, Theologe und Bischof von Ypern (1585-1638)
Löwen, 4. X, 1635. 1? SS. Folio. Pagitt, Ephraim
c1635 copper engraved map; overall size 17 x 19 cm. Very rare map of the American continent. Initially part of a larger ovoid world map with scrollwork above and below, creating a round map, this separately published map was included in Pagitt’s ‘Christianographie, or the Description . . . of the Christian World, not subject to the Pope’, thus including both the world map as well as the American map in the same publication. Though the original world map was first published by an unknown engraver and map maker in c1600, Pagitt’s work was first published in 1635 with later editions in 1636, 1640 and 1674. All place names are in Latin, with additional names of ‘New England’, ‘Holanders (Brasil)’ and ‘Davis Straits’. - Part of the scrollwork to the original world map are visible; a ship and several sea monsters are in the sea. fold as issued; indistinctive plate marks; left edge frayed; evenly toned; lower marginal tear; top margin paper weakness; on verso: old paper hinges; o/w vg cond. Machiavelli, Niccolò.
No place (Geneva?), "1550" [but c. 1635]. 4to. 5 parts in one volume. 8, 320, (4), 106 pp., (1 blank f.), (16), 280, 152, 158 pp. With 5 repeated title vignettes (woodcut portraits) and double-page-sized woodcut in the text. Contemp. vellum with ms. spine title. Edges sprinkled. Early collected edition of Machiavelli's works, including his famous "Principe", the work with which he "founded the science of modern politics" by analysing Cesare Borgia's much-admired "mixture of audacity and prudence, cruelty and fraud, self-reliance and distrust of others" (PMM). This is the so-called "testina" edition, named after the author's woodcut portrait on all the half-titles. It is this very reliable redaction which is used by all quotations of the "Crusca". Five variant editions are known, all bearing the fictitious year of printing "1550" on the title page, through which the (most likely) Swiss publishers intended to circumvent the Papal prohibition. The present variant is usually regarded as the fourth (Bertelli/I.: "Databile al 1635-46"). Contains: 1) "Delle historie fiorentine"; 2) "Il Principe"; 3) "Discorsi"; 4) "Dell'Arte della Guerra"; 5) "L'Asino d'Oro" and other works. - Variously browned throughout due to paper (as common). From the library of Georg Philipp Helberg, secretary to the Electoral church council in Heidelberg and a member of the enlightened secret society "Deutsche Union" (his autograph ink ownership, dated 1787, on the title page). Bertelli/Innocenti 206a. Gamba p. 195, no. 623.3. Bonnant, p. 86f., D. Gerber II, 102f. Lenger, Machiavel, 19. Adams M 10. BM-STC I … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition, illustrated by 68 full-page figures.Contemporary full-parchment binding, smooth spine with ink title.A few very inconspicuous scratches along the bottoms of the covers; small wormhole on spine; parchment slightly dirty. An angular dampstain throughout the first half of the work, with a second dampstain reaching a few gatherings towards the end. Slight worming to inside margin of pp. 183-214 (text remains unaffected). Tear without loss very slightly affecting the engraving on page 199. Later handwritten annotation (19th-century) on verso of first endpaper:"Ouvrage vanté par Linné [Work extolled by Linné] phylos.bota. article 17".A work steeped in the tradition of Renaissance herbalism, the Canadensium Plantarum Historia is set apart by its modern system of classification: it contains the very first descriptions of over 70 species of Canadian flora by the French botanist Jacques-Philippe Cornut (1606-1651).This work, emblematic of the medicinal herbology tradition, is also characteristic of the seventeenth-century passion for botany - a passion reflected in the author's horticultural observations. The finely executed figures are attributed to Pierre Vallet (1575-1657), an artist who, it is interesting to note, became the French court's first botanical painter under the patronage of Marie de Medici - an indication of the prominence that the discipline had acquired. Plants were being studied more descriptively in order to facilitate species characterisation, as evidenced by the construction of the Jardin du Roy between 1626 and 1636. These gardens played a central … [Click Below for Full Description]

" Xansi, Imperii Sinarum Provincia Secunda". Copper etching by Wilhelm Janzoon Blaeu after Martino Martini SJ in original hand coloring. Amsterdam, ca. 1635. The province "Xansi" on this map has almost the same boundaries as the present Shan-xi with the provincial capital Tai-yuan, that is shown on the map as Taiyven. It lies west of Peking and borders on the north directly on the Great Wall of China shown in the upper part of the map. In the west and south the province borders on the Huang-he River. Jean Baptiste COLLIGNON detto "Francois"
Acquaforte, 1635 circa, firmata nell’immagine in basso a sinistra "A.S. inventor"; a destra "F. Collignon Sculp". Sotto l’immagine, legenda alfabetica A-X, distribuita su cinque colonne. CORNUT, Jacques Philippe (1606-1651).
Paris: Simon le Moyne, 1635. 4to., (9 2/8 x 6 4/8 inches). 68 full-page etched plates in the text (some pale staining and one or two pages quite brown). Contemporary vellum over paste-board (spine chipped with loss, front hinge weak). Five South African lilies are also illustrated for the first time. Cornut was a French physician "and his book described for the first time about thirty North American plants, chiefly from the gardens of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. In some plates, as in plate XXXVIII, Apocynum minus rectum Canadense (common milkweed), details of the unique seed case, the seeds with their filamentous pappi, and the flower head are added. . The roots are included on almost all plates, a reflection of their importance in medicinal use. "The fact that the Historia was grounded in medical botany is important to understanding the convention by which Cornut and his artist worked in producing and engraving the illustrations. Cornut's work stands near the end of a very old tradition of herbal literature, and the illustrations reflect a convention established in the mid-sixteenth century. At the same time, Cornut's illustrations were not printed from woodcuts, but from engrav … [Click Below for Full Description]
