STRADANUS, Johannes (Jan van der STRAET).
Venationes ferarum, avium, piscium. Pugnae bestiariorum: & mutuae bestiarum, ...Antwerp, Johannes Galle, ca. 1665/75 [engraved 1578-ca. 1596/1612]. Oblong 1mo (26.5 x 36 cm). With an engraved title-print and 104 numbered engraved prints (plate size 21.5 x 29.5 cm; image size 20.5 x 29.5 cm), each with a verse caption in 2 columns in the foot of the plate (mostly 4 lines, occasionally 2 lines). Half parchment (ca. 1880?). [1], 104 engraved ll. Rare complete set of Stradanus's magnificent series of 104 large hunting prints, including falconry, fishing and even bee-keeping, engraved in the years 1578 to ca. 1596 by Philips Galle and others associated with him. It includes scenes of catching birds of prey and of hunting with them, not only hawks or falcons, but also owls. The other hunting prints show the hunting of elephants, various wild cats, wild boars, bears, crocodiles and other big game, apes (putting on boots!), smaller animals such as rabbits, badgers and porcupines, but also unicorns, fauns (playing pan-pipes!), giant snakes, dragons, sea monsters and other mythical creatures. Some scenes are certainly disturbing for anyone who cares about animals: one shows a live elephant with its trunk cut off. The Belgian Johannes Stradanus "was employed by Duke Cosimo de' Medici in Florence, who commissioned him to make a number of designs for tapestries representing fowling, fishing and hunting scenes, for the adornment of twenty rooms in the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano. The present set of 'Venationes' was engraved from these beautiful and original compositions" (Schwerdt). With a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hondius-- Jodocus
ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER MAPS OF CHINA "China" Copper engraving made by Gerard Mercator published in Amsterdam in 1634 by Jodocus Hondius. Verso Dutch text. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 34 x 47 cm. Of the lands in the Far East, China was seen as the wealthiest and most mysterious and the Jesuit missionairies were among the first to make the dangerous journey. Geographically the map is an interesting array of fact and fiction. The map contains rudimentary geographical information, as there was very little actually known of the region during the early part of the seventeenth century. The two most prominent features of this survey are the portrayal of the peninsula of Korea and the charming illustration China's great wall, a wonder of both ancient and modern worlds. There is also a note porporting to be the location of the palace of the emperor of China. Despite the odd elongation of the country, there are attemps to show various provinces, and seven great cities such as Canton are marked. The interior of China is dominated by several large lakes and the mythical Chiamai Lacus forms the headwaters of five large rivers in northeastern India. The northwest coastline of America appears in the upper top corner with a notation that refers to the Tartar hordes (and the deer) that inhabit the region. As ever in these early maps seamonsters stalk unwary ships and Hondius shows a Dutch merchant sailing on what is labeled as "Chinensis Oceanus". This ocean is portrayed with an elaborate and beautiful pattern which attempts to portray the movement of the waves. The islands of Japa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam, [Cornelis Lodewijksz. vander Plasse?], printed by Frans Pels, 1634. 8vo. Modern boards covered with marbled paper. [4], 177, [1], [2 blank] pp. Second copy located of an early edition of a small and inexpensive medical guide intended for the poor and therefore both giving advice for a healthy life style and suggesting herbal and other medicines, including many they could prepare themselves, rather than paying a doctor or apothecary. The main text gives recipes for medicines to treat more than 100 ailments, ranging from bad breath to the plague. It is followed by a list about 100 household medicines one can prepare one's self to administer to sick friends and neighbours for various ailments named, and an alphabetical list of about 150 medicines one can buy from an apothecary for various ailments named. "One of the simplest and most popular ... health manuals" (Simon Schama, Embarassment of riches, p. 517). With the corner of 1 leaf cut off, and some even smaller marginal defects, one restored, but still in very good condition. Binding also very good. A remarkably well-preserved copy of an extremely rare edition of a medical handbook for the poor. PLINIUS Secundus, Gaius (Pliny the Elder)
The Historie of the World, commonly called the Naturall Historie.London, Adam Islip, 1634. 2 parts in one volume. Folio (23.5 x 32 cm). Elaborate woodcut device on title-page; woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, spine in six compartments, tooled and lettered in gilt. (58), 614, (42) pp. (12), 632, (86) pp. Pliny's renowned Natural History in its second publication in English (repeating, with corrections, the 1601 first publication), translated by Philemon Holland, the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age. The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to the author. Pliny claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 books in 10 volumes and covered over 20,000 facts on topics including the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy , geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Some technical advances he discusses are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding corn. Much of what he wrote about has been confirmed by archaeology. ''We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf [...] Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [... At his death in August 1629 this map was, among 39 other copper plates, purchased by Willem Blaeu who deleted Hondius' name and added his own to the imprint. Blaeu then immediately published 34 of them as part of his first atlas. It was Blau's only large scale map of any part of South East Asia. ENTOMOLOGY. Moffet, Thomas (1553-1604); Penny, Thomas (ca. 1530-1589)
London: 1634. London:, 1634. FIRST EDITION of the "true foundation of modern entomology"(Raven, English Naturalists from Neckham to Ray, 1947).. Folio:. This is the second of Lisney's three issues. A very fine copy, bound in contemporary English calf (with only minor wear.) The text is in excellent, crisp condition with a few scattered rust spots, a few lightly spotted leaves, and one natural paper flaw (leaf X3, with no loss). Illustrated with a decorative woodcut title vignette and over 500 individual woodcuts of insects. Very uncommon in such fine, original condition. The 'Insectorvm Sive Minimorum Animalium Theatrvm' (Theater of Insects, the Smallest of Animals) is the first substantial scientific treatise devoted exclusively to entomology and the first original treatise devoted to natural history composed in England. At its nucleus is the research of no less than Conrad Gessner, (who failed to complete a volume on insects for his vast and revolutionary zoological encyclopedia). Gessner's work was carried to fruition by two English naturalists, Thomas Penny and his colleague Thomas Moffet, with the invaluable assistance of an international network of contacts. In its final form, the "Theater of Insects" brought together information from sources in Asia, England, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, conducted over the course of two generations, from the age of the great taxonomic researches of Aldrovandi and Gessner to the age of Bacon and the early modern scientific revolution. The book's importance is thus two-fold: first, as a watershed in the study of insects, and sec … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stefano Della Bella (Firenze 1610 - Firenze 1664)
[Click Below for Full Description]

METIUS, Adriaan
Amsterdam: Hendrick Laurensz, 1634. First edition, the more important second issue (see below), of this very rare Dutch manual of arithmetic, surveying and fortification. "After a quick review of the elementary operations, including mixed-radix examples, he describes Napier's bones in detail [pp. 38-55]. He includes the use of the square root and cube root bones, an early and unusually complete account" (Tomash & Williams). The work is also notable for an early discussion of the practical application of decimal arithmetic: a section beginning on p. 13 is headed 'Om het overschot van divisie in tienden te brigen, in de Geometria gedienstich' ('To bring the remainder of a division to tenths, useful in geometry'). As an example, the fraction 312/2864 is put in decimal form. It was also in this work that Metius published a famous rational approximation to pi found (but not published) by his father in 1585, namely 355/113 (now called 'Metius' number' - it is correct to 6 decimal places). This is described on pp. 102-103, where Metius also gives an account of previous rational approximations, starting with Archimedes' 22/7. This 1634 issue of Metius treatise is a reissue of the sheets of the 1633 first issue with new preliminaries. In particular, the last 11 pages of the preliminaries of the 1634 issue constitute the first work in Dutch on the proportional compass, or sector (including two illustrations of the instrument), with its application to the problem of wine-gauging (the first issue does not contain any account of the proportional compass). The problem of determining the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mateo Aleman
The Rogue: or, The Life of Guzman de Alfarache by Mateo Aleman Robert Allot, London, 1634 Third edition of the English translation of this picaresque novel that was initially in Spanish and published 1599. A street urchin grow up to become a rogue and end up in adventures. This was a popular genre during those days. The highlight of this particular copy is the ex-libris bookplate belonging to Sir Henry Mainwaring (1587-1653). He was an English corsair who commanded a fleet that ravaged the Atlantic and the Mediterranean seas. Later on he became a naval officer in the English fleet. To be holding this book, originally purchased and owned by an ex-pirate, is quite thrilling. As his life reflects the rogue character in this book the provenance could not be more fitting. Original full leather binding, although quite ravaged; very worn edges and corners; a good part of the lower front corner has been chipped off; rubbed; cracked joints. The spine label with the title is still there mostly intact. The inside is nicer; the pages are a bit wavy and the front end leaf has come loose; there is a modern ex-libris plate on the rear pastedown. - - - Shipping within Europe: $17 Shipping outside Europe: $25 The seller takes no responsibility for any potential customs fees by the destination country.
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
