Melchior Deventer
Insgesamt in gutem Zustand. Insgesamt in gutem Zustand. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Ferreira de Lacerda, Dona Bernarda
1634. Lisbon. Mathias Rodrigues. 8vo, (130 x 95 mm). 7 ff., 121 pp., 7 ff. (colophon bound at beginning). Old vellum, reused. Restoration to engraved title page causing a little loss at bottom, remargined at right not causing loss, some staining and browning, tiny worm holes on text for c. 20 ff., but overall fine.- First edition, rare work of poetry by Portuguese Nun, Ferreira de Lacerda, consisting of some 24 ballads; though Portuguese, Lacerda also composed in Spanish – understandable for the union of both Crowns at the time-, the main poem is in Spanish though other short poems are in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Latin. Engraved title page by Joao Bautista within architectural border including Carmelite arms at head and author’s arms at foot. The work consists of some 24 ballads -for which reason Gallardo considers it should be classified as a Romancero- and various sonnets and other poetical compositions in Spanish. There are also a few compositions in Portuguese and Latin. Dona Bernarda Ferreira deLacerdawas a celebrated Portuguese poetess, who was born at Oporto in 1596. She was the daughter of the High Chancellor, Ignacio Ferreira Leitao, and married Fernao Correa de Sousa. Possessed of brilliant intellectual gifts, she had made a profound study of philosophy, mathematics and history; Hebrew, Greek and Latin; and was a miniaturist and musician. Philip IV wished to appoint her as governess to the Infantes Carlos and Fernando, but she refused--probably from patriotic motives. In addition to the poems in this volume, she published another importa … [Click Below for Full Description]

1634. [CHAPELAIN (Jean)]. GODARD, Benjamin 1849-1895
1634. Folio (330 x 255 mm). Title + 7 pp. Notated in ink on systems with 3 staves, one for solo voice ("Chant") and two for piano, on 16-stave paper with small octagonal blindstamp of Lard-Esnault, Paris to upper inner corners. With autograph dedication to head of title: "à Madame La Comtesse Mercy d'Argenteau." With text in French. A fair copy. Slightly browned, a bit heavier at margins; some show-through; occasional smudges. Closely trimmed at lower edge, just affecting notation in several instances. Published as a separate piece by Durand & Schœnewerk in Paris [PN D.S. & Cie. 1634], [1873]). "Godard composed works in most genres with the exception of church music, but ultimately he made his reputation as a composer of salon pieces for piano and of songs, albums of which were translated into English... His early promise did not really develop in his later works, although his early death from consumption meant that he had no chance to mature fully as a composer... His songs have considerable charm and one or two numbers from his operas have survived in the repertory in their own right." Richard Langham Smith in Grove Music Online. Louise Mercy d'Argenteau (born Marie-Clotilde-Elisabeth Louise de Riquet, 1837-1890), the dedicatee, became famous for her championship of Russian nationalist composers, especially Alexander Borodin and César Cui. Auguste de Chatillon (1808-1881) was a painter and poet. Item #26862. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

CROON, Petrus.
STCV 3151545 (3 copies); Verberckmoes, Laughter, jestbooks and society in the Spanish Netherlands, p. 189 Rare first and only edition of a book with entertaining riddles in prose and verse, for use within the family or at social parties, by the popular author Petrus Croon IV (1634-1682). He states in his preface, that because his earlier published book Moy-al was so graciously received, he presents his readers with another collection of riddles and epigrams, to feed both their lust for pleasure and their lust for learning. All riddles are presented to Philoxenus, a lover of guests, and are told by Conviva, an invited friend. The riddles are given in verse and the answers are afterwards discussed in dialogues, with the solutions hinted at but not bluntly given, because Croon believed it would keep interest when the answer was not fully known. Included at the end is a section containing the solutions to all riddles and emblems of the Moy-al.With library stamps and bookplate. Frontispiece and title-page closely trimmed, but without loss of the image or text. Rebacked, lacking last flyleaf. Overall in good condition.

antique China map, with Korea and Japan - Mercator-Hondius
1634. ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER MAPS OF CHINA "China" Copper engraving made by Gerard Mercator published in Amsterdam in 1634 by Jodocus Hondius. Verso Dutch text. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 34 x 47 cm. Of the lands in the Far East, China was seen as the wealthiest and most mysterious and the Jesuit missionairies were among the first to make the dangerous journey. Geographically the map is an interesting array of fact and fiction. The map contains rudimentary geographical information, as there was very little actually known of the region during the early part of the seventeenth century. The two most prominent features of this survey are the portrayal of the peninsula of Korea and the charming illustration China's great wall, a wonder of both ancient and modern worlds. There is also a note porporting to be the location of the palace of the emperor of China. Despite the odd elongation of the country, there are attemps to show various provinces, and seven great cities such as Canton are marked. The interior of China is dominated by several large lakes and the mythical Chiamai Lacus forms the headwaters of five large rivers in northeastern India. The northwest coastline of America appears in the upper top corner with a notation that refers to the Tartar hordes (and the deer) that inhabit the region. As ever in these early maps seamonsters stalk unwary ships and Hondius shows a Dutch merchant sailing on what is labeled as "Chinensis Oceanus". This ocean is portrayed with an elaborate and beautiful pattern which attempts to portray the movement of the waves. The islands o … [Click Below for Full Description]
