Oquendo, Antonio de; Iudice [Judice], Nicolas
N.d. [c.1634]. Folio, (295 x 202 mm). 8 ff. Unbound. Fine example, wide margins, and clean paper.- Rare memorial prepared by Nicolas Iudice with regards to the conduct of Don Antonio de Oquendo, and lists his actions, which would be subject to reprimand. Oquendo (1577 – 1640) was a remarkable Spanish Admiral and navigator, son of Miguel de Oquendo, who died during theArmada Invenciblecampaign against England; after a time working at the Viceroyalty of New Spain, he became Admiral-General of the Ocean Fleet, a position under which Oquendo lead an attack on Pernambuco, to relieve it from the Dutch West India Company, who had taken it the previous year. Iudice was commander of the troops on board the fleet Captained by Oquendo, he “complains of the high-handed action taken by General Antonio deOquendo, in command of the Galleons, who, in contravention of the King’s decrees and other instructions, had deprived Judice of his command, and subjected him to imprisonment and other indignities at Portobello and Habana; and, by his lack of judgment, lost some vessels off Habana.” (Maggs, VI, 164). The imprint is full of reports of Oquendo´s actions during his period as Admiral of the Fleet in the Caribbean, and thus a significant source of information on Spanish activities in the region. Rare, we could only trace one copy ever offered, by Maggs, in 1927. Not in Palau or Sabin.

RALEIGH, Sir Walter
London: by Robert Young] for G. Lathum, and R. Young, 1634. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The designs and style of Raleigh's 'History of the World' places the book among the noblest of literary enterprises" - DNB Sir Walter Raleigh, a 16th-century English explorer and writer, is most known for his South American voyage in hopes of discovering the 'City of Gold'. While imprisoned for treason, he composed his famous book 'History of the World' - a historical view of the world with a heavy emphasis on geography. Even though the work was written as a history book, Raleigh intended to provide advice to King James I of England on how to handle his reign and his feelings toward princes. This work covers five distinct sections, each of which is charmingly illustrated with city views, maps, and plans. · Creation of the world through life of Abraham · Abraham through the destruction of Solomon's Temple · Fall of Jerusalem to Philip of Macedonia · Reign of Philip to rise of Antigonus · Rule of Alexander the Great through Roman conquests This 1634 edition includes an undated title page with Raleigh's portrait along with impressive double-page maps and genealogical tables.

To the rear of this work there is a name of the authors cited in the book. 'Romanae Historiae' is an English exposition of Roman Antiquities. He published this work in 1614 for use by Abingdon School. This and another work by Godwyn were the only school text books on this subject for a century. To the preface Godwyn notes the difficulties he had writing this in the school room. The final work to this sammelband is by Francis Rous. It is a historical work looking at the antiquities of Ancient Greece. It looks at the government, the people, their religions, superstition, sacrifices and much more. This is the scarcer of the three works. Francis Rous was an English politician and Puritan. He wrote many theological and devotional works. Condition: … [Click Below for Full Description]

GALILEI GALILEO GALILEE - MERSENNE (Marin)]
« In 1629, after some earlier approaches, Mersenne wrote to Galileo, offering his services in publishing “the new system of the motion of the earth which you have perfected, but which you cannot publish because of the prohibition of the Inquisition”. Galileo did not reply to this generous offer—nor, indeed, to any of Mersenne’s later letters to him. But Mersenne was not put off. He had come to see in Galileo’s work a supreme illustration of the rationality of nature governed by mechanical laws and, so far as these laws went, of the true program for natural science. In 1633 he published his first critique of Galileo’s Dialogo (1632) in his Traité des mouvemens et de la cheute des corps pesans et de la proportion de leurs différentes vitesses, dans lequel l’on verra plusieurs expériences trés exactes. His first response to hearing of Galileo’s condemnation in that year was to agree with the need for the Church to preserve Scripture from error; yet he came forward at once with a French version (with additions of his own) of Galileo’s unpublished early treatise on mechanics under the title Les méchaniques de Galilée (1634), and with a summary account of the first two days of the Dialogo and of the trial in Les questions théologiques, physique … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the signe of the. Published 1634. 12mo, contemporary dark brown calf wth elaborate gilt floral chain-link design to both covers and spine, (18) 701 (1) pp, with engraved title page borders. Good copy, neat Japanese paper reinforcement to front inner hinge, some wear to edges of front flyleaf, contents very good, binding shows some loss of leather to bottom half inch of spine, otherwise a splendid example of this oft-published Puritan devotional manual first published in the early 1600s. This is its 32nd edition. It was a wildly popular book and an enormous influence on John Bunyan, who credits it with causing his spiritual awakening. Intact copies from the early 17th century are rare on the market as most copies were read to the point of tatters. No copy has come up for auction from before 1650 in the last several decades. OCLC lists one copy at Oxford (COPAC lists the same copy; ESTC S90427). Good.

Nicolas Jorel
Paris : chez Séb. Chappelet, 1634. [Click Below for Full Description]

(Bayly, Lewis)
(London): Printed for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the signe of the Beare in Pauls Church-yard. Good.
