Beautiful woodcut decorations, headers, initials throughout. First Edition. Contains the very scarce printed A before the title. and the dedication to Thomas Lord Binning in the 5th book which is not present in all copies. Fairly scarce early English printing detailing the current throughts on the philosopher's stone, numerology, burial ceremonies, different manners of duels and battles, meteors, astronomy, metaphysicks, miracles, etc. Sensitively rebacked, retaining some of the original leather on the boards, which are repaired and scuffed and worn but in the state considered "patina" rather than "tired". Judging from the leather on the spine, we would guess the work had been done in the last 50 years. Armorial book plate of Abel John Ram, Esq.

WELLS, John.
First and only edition, early issue (see below), of this very rare work which contains the first use of logarithms in dialling. Wells was a close friend of Briggs, Gellibrand and Gunter, assisted Briggs with the construction his tables of logarithms, and performed with Gellibrand and Gunter the measurements that led to the discovery of magnetic variation (published by Gellibrand in the same year as the present work).

Though he does not appear in the Dictionary of National Biography, and there is no record of his having attended either university, John Wells (d. 1635) was a man of considerable importance in the seventeenth century. Our first record of Wells consists in the grant, on May 10, 1606, to him and Antony Lewis, jointly, of the office of Keeper of the Naval Stores at Deptford Strand, Chatham, and Portsmouth for life. In 1615 a new grant of this office was issued, this time to John Wells alone. As Keeper of His Majesties Stores at the Navy Yard at Deptford, Wells had the use there of a fine house with a spacious garden second in size and value only to the adjacent house reserved for his immediate superior, the Treasurer of the Navy. Here at Deptford Wells's associates were the high naval officers who constantly brought back from distant lands data that would be scientifically valuable to anyone who could elicit and make use of it.

Most important, however, was the association of Wells with Briggs, Gunter, and Gellibrand. A letter from Wells to Briggs dated 9 January 1621 (Rigaud, Vol. I, pp. 5-6) shows that Wells assisted Briggs in the cons … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blaeu, W
Amsterdam:. 1635.. Very good condition. One of the most distinctive early Dutch maps of America, characterized by a striking westward orientation, and prized for combining all the best elements of 17th century Dutch cartography. Showing Manhattan (Manatthans) only six years after it first appeared on a map. The most interesting inaccuracies of the map include the placement of Lake Champlain (Lacus Irocoisiensis), the delineation of Newport Bay, and the angle of the coast between New York and Cape Cod. Original hand color; decorative elements include Native Americans in canoes, Native American villages, European ships, bear, deer, foxes, beaver and birds. With lovely calligraphy, a title cartouche with coat of arms and two Native Americans, compass roses, and rhumb lines. Based on Adrian Block's 1614 manuscript, with some English place names (Niev Engeland, New Pleimouth, Milford Haven) which may indicate English sources, such as Captain John Smith's map. The view of the Northeast seen here would be the standard until the end of the seventeenth century. Reference: Schwartz & Ehrenberg, Mapping of America, pl. 58, p.103. Burden, P.D. 241. [Iudice, Nicolas]:
[Np. ca. 1635].. 8 leaves. Folio. Later plain wrappers. Minor dust soiling on edges. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. In the present memorial to King Philip IV, Don Nicolas Iudice, commander of the Spanish fleet dispatched to Tierra Firma, criticizes the actions of Gen. Antonio de Oquéndo, the commander of the highly prized galleon fleet for 1634, for acting against the orders of the Crown and for his own personal benefit. Iudice lists Oquéndo's numerous past and present misdeeds, promises to provide proof, and challenges Oquéndo to do the same. Iudice describes events in Havana, San Augustin, and elsewhere. Good evidence of administrative in-fighting in Spanish America. Not in EUROPEAN AMERICANA or any other reference we can discover.

No copies found.Publius Terentius Afer (195/185-159 BC), better known as Terence, was a playwright of the Roman Republic. His comedies were performed for the first time around 170-160 BC, and he died young probably in Greece or on his way back to Rome. Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator, brought Terence to Rome as a slave, educated him and later on, impressed by his abilities, freed him. All of the six plays Terence wrote have survived. One famous quotation by Terence reads: "Homo sum, humani nil a me alienum puto", or "I am a man, I consider nothing that is human alien to me." This appeared in his play Heauton. Terence's date of birth is disputed; Aelius Donatus, in his incomplete Commentum Terenti, considers the year 185 BC to be the year Terentius was born; Fenestella, on the other hand, states that he was born ten years earl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hardcover. 194 x 143 mm (7 5/8 x 5 5/8"). 12 p.l., 203 pp. Third or Fourth Edition (according to STC). Sympathetic modern (probably 19th century) calf, covers panelled in blind, flat spine with vertical gilt titling. Historiated headpieces, foliated initials, device on title page. Spine leather a bit marked and scuffed, leather on covers slightly irregular in color, leaves with faint diagonal dampstain at lower right throughout (scarcely noticeable most of the time, but slightly darker on a half dozen preliminary leaves), otherwise quite an excellent copy, the binding solid, and the text clean, unusually fresh, and with comfortable margins. A major early British work in the field of anthropology, the "Enquiries" of Brerewood (1565?-1613) examines the history and contemporary state of the relations of large cultural groups in the world, particularly in Europe, western Asia, and Northern Africa. Although Brerewood writes as a person most interested in the locations, beliefs, and practices of the various branches of the Christian religion, he actually takes on the formidable task of discussing the changing character and influence of languages, peoples, and religions down through history. In the course of his discussion, he examines the spread and decline of Greek and Latin, the concurrent rise of the Romance languages, and the nature of some other tongues, including Sla … [Click Below for Full Description]

Large Plantin vignette "Labore Constantia" on last printed leaf. Contemporary full calf, boards with gilt-lined borders, spine with five raised bands and gilt-bordered red morocco title label.= Only edition of this uncommon work on the natural history of, mainly, Central America and the West Indies and especially on Mexico. Among the mammals there are no less than three different species of armadillo. An interesting woodcut shows two whales, of which one apparently has a giant squid or octopus on its nose. 15 wood engravings are on spice plants. Several figures are of animals never depicted before; for instance, the manatee ("manati") on page 247. Another woodcut shows a bird reminiscent of the dodo; birds-of-paradise are illustrated as well. A copy with wide margins. The paper is locally slightly age-toned but nowhere near as much as usual. Londini: Excudebat Will. Stanesbeius, pro Richardo Meighen, MDCXXXV, 1635. 27.5 cm x 18 cm, bound in sixes, pp. [26], 304, [12], [2] - errata, two stunning, large engraved maps in the text and one plan, text engravings of coins, tables, printed side-notes. Full brown calf, period rebind by Pierre Thibaudeau, 5 raised bands, gilt spine titles, red sprinkled edges, new endpapers, some minor soiling and tanning to the margins, light bit of worming to lower white space margin, else text block clean and crisp overall. "Mare clausum was probably the most widely read of all Selden’s treatises. The work considered the question of dominion of the seas. The title literally translated from Latin means enclosed sea, in pointed opposition to the work Mare liberum, or free sea, published by Hugo Grotius in 1609. While Grotius, a prominent Dutch legal scholar, argued that the sea was openly navigable by all countries for trade, Selden countered that the sea was as subject to a country’s private dominion as land. ... Mare clausum provided the basis of England’s official position on the seas for over 100 years. Although in time Selden's argument failed, his participation in the debate helped launch the field of modern international law. Mare clausum has a secure place in the canon of classic legal texts." - Tarlton Law Library, Univ. of Texas. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. Quarto.

Estienne Binet
Rouen - Jacques Besongne, 1635 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A very scarce first edition of this work on puragtory from French Jesuit Etienne Binet. Binet entered the Society of Jesus in 1690 and was rector of the colleges at Rouen and Paris, and provincial of Paris, Lyons, and Champagne. He was the author of forty-five published works. Father Binet's works are marked by a clear, graceful style, and quite an original turn of thought; they abound in apt quotations from Scriptures and the Fathers; although written 250 years ago they still furnish both pleasurable and profitable spiritual reading. Father Binet was the school-fellow and life-long friend of St. Francis de Sales, whose cheerful spirituality his own so much resembles. (NA)In French. With monastic bookplate to front pastedown. Condition: In a vellum binding. Externally worn, with marks to the boards and some minor loss to the rear board. Handwritten ink spine label. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Front hinge tender. Previous owner's label to recto of front free-endpaper. Closed tears to rear pastedown. Pages are age-toned, with some scattered spotting throughout. Overall: GOOD ONLY.
