BLAEU, W.
Amsterdam 1635 - Fine original color; paper lightly toned, else excellent condition. A very attractive example in full original color of one of the most decorative early maps of Florida and the entire Gulf and Caribbean regions. It was based on the extremely rare Hessel Gerritsz chart of 1631, which was made for pilots sailing for the Dutch West India Company. Blaeu¿s edition retains the nautical characteristics of its ancestor in its rhumb lines, attractive compass roses, and sailing ships. The cartouche and scales are decorated with putti and a striking selection of fauna, including reptiles, a sea tortoise and a bat, associated with the regions portrayed. Burden 242.

Epicteto.
[Click Below for Full Description]

MURPHY, James Cavanah.
BAL 2220; Palau 186308; Lowndes III, p. 1635; Sinclair, Bibliography of art and architecture in the Islamic world 10707. First edition of an impressive work on the art and architecture of Moorish Spain, published in instalments from 1813 to 1816. It contains a total of 102 striking plates, including the four additional plates usually found only in Bohn's reissue published ca. 1830. The plates are preceded by a short introduction, a table of the plates and descriptions of each of the plates. The first 9 (8 numbered) plates show the Mosque at Córdoba, followed by a view of the bridge of Córdoba, while the rest of the work is devoted to the extraordinary complex of the Alhambra. It contains scenic views as well as architectural views, several plans and details of the ornaments, inscriptions and other decorations. It was completed posthumously from the drawings of the Irish architect James Cavanah Murphy (1760-1814), who visited the Alhambra and the Mosque at Córdoba in 1802. Some of the plates were based on engravings from Antigüedades árabes de España, published in 1780, although Murphy has clearly seen and redrawn their subjects. The work is foxed throughout but all plates are printed with very clear impressions. The spine is slightly faded. Good copy of a work with beautiful plates.

Fulvio Testi (Ferrara 1593 - Modena 1646)
Bellissimo ms. diplomatico autografo firmato tit. 'Istruzioni al Sig. Gio.

TERENTIUS AFER (Publius)
Ex officina Elzeviriana, Lugd. Batavorum [i.e. Leiden], 1635. Engraved title, small woodcut portrait, printed in black and red. 12mo. [130 x 72 x 23 mm]. [24]ff, 304, [8] pp. Bound c.1675 in red goatskin, the covers tooled in gilt with a double fillet border and an all-over design of repeated drawer-handles, a four-petalled flower, a pointed flower, volutes and dots. The spine divided into four panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second, the others with a large open flower tool and sprigs, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Rebacked preserving the original spine, tips of the corners worn). Willems, Les Elzevier, 433. This appears to be the work of Queens' Binder C, with his four petalled flower tool, a pointillé version with the petals attached to the centre circle, the petals at 3.00 and 9.00 o'clock slightly flattened, and with the 9.00 petal tilted fractionally higher. This tool and a pointed flower tool can be seen in plate 72 in Nixon, Five Centuries of English Bookbinding, on a binding for James Duke of York c.1676. Queens' Binder C is the rarer of the four (or three if A and D are connected, as I suspect). Bookplate of Newton Hall, Cambridge. Scrawled signature on front fly-leaf.
