MENGOLI, Pietro.
First edition, and a fine copy from the library of Pietro Riccardi, of this very rare and highly original work in which Mengoli "set up the basic rules of the calculus thirty years before Newton and Leibniz. Both of these were influenced by his contribution, in the case of Leibniz the influence was direct as he read Mengoli's work, while in the case of Newton he knew of it indirectly through studying Wallis" (MacTutor History of Mathematics). Mengoli develops here a new method of quadratures, i.e., finding the areas of geometrical figures, based on François Viète's symbolic, or 'specious' algebra, and on his own new theory of 'quasi proportions,' the first true theory of limits. Like the Geometria indivisibilibus (1635) of Mengoli's master Bonaventura Cavalieri, the Geometriae is an important precursor of the integral calculus. Cavalieri's method of indivisibles, which was entirely geometrical, had been much criticized by his contemporaries for having uncertain foundations, and Mengoli wrote the Geometriae in part as a defense of Cavalieri. Mengoli's 'specious geometry' is, however, an entirely new method with a largely algebraic basis. This is an extremely rare book: OCLC records just one copy in the US (New York Public Library), and we have located only one copy in auction records.

In the first decades of the seventeenth century mathematicians began to assimilate the symbolic algebra introduced by Viète in his great work In Artem Analyticem Isagoge (1591). The first important consequence was Descartes' La Géométrie (1637), whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

PETIT, Samuel
sumptibus Caroli Morelli, viâ Iacobaeâ ad insigne Fontis, 1635. FIRST EDITION. Folio. pp. xii, 55, (i), 557 (i.e. 567), (i). Roman and Greek letter, some Italic. Title in red and black with fine large engraved printer's device of fountain allegorical figures of the 4 continents at corners, fine large floriated woodcut initials head and tail-pieces. Light age yellowing, some quires a little browned with some scattered spotting, lower blank corner of t-p with some minor soiling. A very good, clean copy in contemporary vellum over boards, yapp edges, a.e.r. First edition of Samuel Petit's important and beautifully printed study of ancient Athenian law, dedicated to Francis Auguste de Thou, the son of Jacques. A distinguished French orientalist, Protestant minister and principal of the Protestant Accademie de Nimes, Petit was a correspondent with the leading European men of letters of his day and a friend of Selden, Gessendi and Vossius. As no systematic collection of Greek laws has come down to us Petit gathered statements from the speeches of the Attic orators, and with the aid of inscriptions to corroborate them, compiled this work, as much a social history of the Greeks as of their laws. The work is divided into eight books, effectively systemizing the law, the first dealing with religion and worship of the Gods, ministers or priests and those who officiated in Holy rites, and the laws relating to temples and festivals. The second deals with the rights of citizens and those of slaves and free men, with laws relating to children and parents. The third concerns the Senate of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Janssonius Johann ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1635 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 37,5 x 51; - description: Map shows south Italy with partly Sicily and the Aethna; - vita of the artist: "Johannes Janssonius (Jansson),( 1588- 1664) Amsterdam was born in Arnhem, the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder,a publisher and bookseller. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). Wood, William
London, 1635. Small quarto. 20th-century crimson morocco, gilt, bound for Myers & Co. of London, spine gilt with raised bands. Map trimmed to margins with two old neat repairs on verso. Upper margins trimmed, touching headlines and an occasional page number. Neatly repaired worm track through outer blank margins of title and text leaves to C4. Else very good. In a black half morocco and cloth box. The rare second edition of Wood's NEW ENGLANDS PROSPECT..., with the very rare map: one of the classic works on early New England, important for descriptions of the land, natives, and its handsome map. The first edition of this remarkably accurate work was published in 1634. According to Vail it includes the earliest topographical description of the Massachusetts colony. It is also the first detailed account of the animals and plants of New England, as well as the Indian tribes of the region. Of particular note is a chapter describing the customs and work of Indian women. Part One is divided into twelve chapters and is devoted to the climate, landscape, and early settlements, and describes in some detail the native trees, plants, fish, game, and mineral ores, as well as including advice to those thinking of crossing the Atlantic. The early settlements described include Boston, Medford, Marblehead, Dorchester, Roxbury, Watertown, and New and Old Plymouth. These chapters also include four charming verses which are essentially a series of lists naming the native trees (twenty lines, starting "Trees both in hills and plaines, in plenty be, / The long liv'd Oake, and mournfull Cyprus t … [Click Below for Full Description]
