B00KLAZUFY In Latin. 1635 fifth edition 'Ex Officina Typographica Balthazaris Belleri' (Douai, France), 4 1/4 x 7 inches tall x 2 1/4 inches thick full leather bound, engraved printer's mark (golden compass) to title page, [32], 1040, [47] pp., complete, including original blank endpapers. Ink inscriptions to front free-endpaper and title page, which has mild soiling. Very mild age-toning to paper, which is still quite supple. Occasional mild creasing or foxing to a few pages. Otherwise, a very good copy of this scarce early collected works, of Thomas Kempis (circa 1380-1471), medieval Catholic monk, priest, copyist and author. Kempis is accepted by modern scholars as the most probable author of The Imitation of Christ, which is one of the best known Christian books on devotion, the text of which is included in this collection of his body of work, edited by Catholic theologian Henricus Sommalius (1534-1619), based on the manuscript of St. James at Liege, and published by renowned Douai, France, printer Balthazar Belleri. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~KMP~ . Good. 1635. Fifth Edition.

Calf. 12 cm An excellent edition, an attractive binding, tasteful typography (Ref: Willems 433; Rahir 425; Berghman 2151; Schweiger 2,1065; Dibdin 2,472/73; Moss 2,671/72: 'one of the most beautiful'; Brunet 5,715/16; Graesse 6/1,59; Ebert 22507) (Details: Nice binding. Back ruled blind, and with 4 raised bands. Boards with blind double and triple fillet borders, and fleurettes. All three edges of the boards gilt. Edges of the bookblock dyed red. Title engraved by Cornelis Cl. Du(y)send, it depicts the Roman general Scipio Africanus in armour, while putting the pilleus, a felt hat, which was given to a slave at his enfranchisement as a sign of freedom, on the head of a half naked woman called 'Venus Afra', at her feet sits Amor. Since Terentius mentions Venus only once and incidentally, and Scipio didnot manumit the Carthagian Terentius, this scene must refer to the liberation of the African Muse, in the figure of Venus, and hence the freeing of the Muse of the African Terentius, by the conqueror of Hannibal and Carthage, Scipio Africanus. Woodcut portrait of Terence on p. *8 verso. The Elsevier brothers printed, according to Willems, 5 issues of this edition in 1635. This is the first and best one. 'La plus belle et la plus estimée est incontestablement la première, qui est un chef-d'oeuvre typographique'. The two Elsevier brothers, with the same refugee background as Heinsius, gradually brought their typographical artistry to a peak, and their production of this Teren … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blaeu, Joan
?Aethiopia Inferior, vel Exterior?. Copper engraving first published in 1635 by the house of Blaeu in Amsterdam. Size: 38,5 x 49,5 cm. With original hand colouring.Attractive map of Southern Africa, shortly before the first Dutch settlement in the region. The map was largely based on Portuguese exploration, both real and imagined. The area shown is from the Congo River basin around the Cape of Good Hope and up the east coast as far as northern present-day Mozambique. A good number of coastal names are given, including Mozambique Island which was an important re-supply point for ships sailing to India and the East. To the north just below the equator, we see one of the lakes described by Claudius Ptolomaeus in the 2nd century AD, thought to be the source of the Nile. Information on the interior is sparse, reflecting the lack of knowledge the Europeans had about the interior of Africa. Unlike many other maps which are filled in with fanciful or fictitious information, this map more accurately portrays actual knowledge. This was the standard map of South Africa throughout the 17th century after which many maps were copied. The cartouche depicts two native Africans holding up an ox skin bearing the map title. At their feet are monkeys and tortoises.Price: ?850,-.
