Drexel, Jeremias
[Click Below for Full Description]

Pliny, the Elder.
London, Adam Islip, 1634. Folio (235 x 320 mm). 2 vols. in one. (58), 614, (42) pp. (12), 632, (86) pp. Elaborate woodcut device on title-page; woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemp. calf, spine in six compartments, tooled and lettered in gilt. Pliny's renowned Natural History in its second publication in English (repeating, with corrections, the 1601 first publication), translated by Philemon Holland, the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age. The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to the author. Pliny claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 books in 10 volumes and covered over 20.000 facts on topics including the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy, geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Some technical advances he discusses are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding corn. Much of what he wrote about has been confirmed by archaeology. "We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf [.] Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [. He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specia … [Click Below for Full Description]

GUIBERT (GUYBERT), Philbert].
1634. WorldCat (5 copies of Griset issue only); this edition not in Krivatsy; Wellcome; SUDOC. Only copy located of the Gesselin issue of the 1634 edition of a remarkably popular collection of medical texts by the French physician Philibert Guibert (1579?-1633) (and others). As indicated by the title, Guibert wrote these "charitable" texts to make academic medicinal recipes available to the general public for an affordable price. At the same time it was an attack on the practices and utility of apothecaries as he provided details on how to compose common pharmaceutical compounds and advised the public to buy the ingredients directly. Of course, the recipes were to be executed under the direction of a physician. The present edition has previously been known only from the Claude Griset issue (also rare), published in the same year: the engraved title-page bears both Griset’s and Gesselin’s name, while the letterpress title-page of the other known copies has only Griset’s name in the imprint and the present copy only Gesselin's.With owner's inscription of A. de Grateloup on paste-down. Some occasional minor foxing, three leaves have a small corner torn-off and some leaves have some wormholes in the margins. A good copy.

BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Aurelius, Marcus, Emperor of Rome (Meric Casaubon translator)
London: M. Flesher for Richard Mynne, 1634. First English language edition. Translated out of the original Greek; with notes: by Meric Casaubon, Marcus Aurelius' extremely influential expression of Stoic philosophy. Small quarto (185 x 132 mm), without blank A1, otherwise complete as issued. Mid 20th-century plain calf, spine gilt-lettered and dated direct, double gilt rules, red edges. Engraved plate. Bookplate of the Philadelphia architect Hamilton Vogdes (1893-1979) to front pastedown. With contemporary marginalia and underlining on approximately 50 pages, often struggling to reconcile the text with Christian orthodoxy, a few comments just shaved at fore edge. Light toning to contents, a very copy. First edition in English, a translation that proved an enduring success, remaining in print into the 20th century. "The charitable-sociable Stoicism of Casaubon's Marcus Aurelius appealed to a peaceful cosmic holism and rational moral duty in urging the pious conformity widely praised by Stuart advocates of the established church" (Barbour, English Epicures and Stoics, p. 195). In the 19th century Marcus Aurelius' reputation became increasingly contested, on the one hand being praised by liberal Anglican scholars who read his Stoicism as prefiguring Christianity, on the other championed by a number of prominent writers who found it difficult to believe in the existence of God at all. Copies have occasionally appeared on the market with the Faithorne engraved portrait of Marcus Aurelius from Gataker's edition of 1652 inserted as frontispiece, but non … [Click Below for Full Description]
