SCULTETUS, ABRAHAM
Francofurti, Jonae Rhodii, 1634. (20) 1336 (16) p. Origineel Leer met ribben, 4° (Rug iets slijtage. Abr. Abraham Scultetus was a Calvinist. He held to the doctrines of predestination and agreed with the Synod of Dort and their doctrinal deliverances. Scultetus was a Superlapsarian, and taught that from his position as professor at Heidelberg. Scultetus denied the imputation of the active obedience of Christ following the teaching of Piscator. Scultetus was chosen as a representative of the Palatinate for the Synod of Dort. Scultetus was a prominent member of that body. He preached a sermon on 122 Psalm on 15 December, an early honor given to him by the Synod. He also gave an address on the "Certainty of Grace" that apparently showed him to be a gifted speaker. Some of held that Scultetus was the most prominent foreigner at the Synod along with George Carleton, Bishop of Llandaff from England. He agreed with the condemnation of the Remonstrants and the doctrinal decrees of the Synod.).

Lucian of Samosata
Oxford: Printed by William Turner, 1634.. Small quarto, pp. [1-8] [1-8] 1-196; collates A4-I4, K4-T4, V4, X4-Z4, Aa4-Cc4, modern black buckram. First Hickes edition of the DIALOGUES and first edition in English of Lucian's "True Historie." Includes "Lucian His True Historie" and "Icaromenippus, or the Loftie Traveller" (also known as "Above the Clouds"), as well as other fantastic dialogues and pieces. Lucian's "Verae Historiae," dating from the 2nd century A.D., is the "... earliest surviving interplanetary romance; a satire in which a sailing ship's crew is carried by a whirlwind to an inhabited moon." - Locke, Voyages in Space 002. Lucian is a major proto figure for fantasy, not only for his "True Historie," but also for "Icaromenippus" and other fantastic dialogues and pieces collected here. Lucian "was one of the first great fantasists, producing material that was knowingly fiction, satirizing the old gods but using supernatural plot devices. His most important works were his Dialogues, a form he derived from Plato (427-347 BC); they have been imitated by scores of writers from the 15th century on ... His Menippus sequence, 'Menippus' (also known as 'Necyomantia') and 'Icaromenippus,' shows an old philosopher endeavouring to discover the meaning and realities of life, first through discussions with the dead in the underworld and then with the gods on Olympus ... In 'Charon' the ferryman over the Styx leaves the underworld to explore life. It is perhaps Lucian's most expressive form of reverse perception, again highlighting the pettiness of humanity ... RONDINELLI (FRANCESCO) :
In Firenza, Gio : Batista Landini, 1634 ; in 4º, vélin de l'époque, titre manuscrit au dos ; [16], 284, [4] pp. ; (signatures :  ,   , A-Z, Aa-Nn4). Edition originale rare.

ARIOSTO (Lodovico)
London printed by G. Miller for J. Parker, 1634. Folio, 273 x 164 mms., pp. [xviii], 423 [424 -432 index], [45 Epigrams, 46 blank], engraved title-page with vignette portraits of Ariosto and Harington, a partially clothed female figure to the left of the title (with a rather rude putto), centurion on right, 46 full-page engraved plates, tail-pieces, printed in double columns, with continuous text and registration going from the end of the twelfth book to the beginning of the fourteen (superstition rules), with very fine, well-inked impressions of the plates, bound in 18th calf, gilt border on covers, joints very skilfully restored and richly gilt spine with black morocco label laid down. With the autograph and date "John Barnard/ 1740" on the lower margin of the title-page; Barnard ( c. 1685 - 1764), born into a Quaker family, was a politician, and, according to ODNB "a devoutly evangelical churchman, of a latitudinarian bent, who preferred clergymen to be 'Tories in the Church and Whigs in the state." He was exceptionally well-read, and I regret the absence of any annotations attributable to him. Peter France, in The Oxford Guide to English Literature in Translation (2000), comments that "Harington adopts the metre of the original, ottava rima. His translation, however, is anything but literal, feeling itself at liberty to abbreviate 'matters impertinent to us' [.], as well as freely reworking the phrasing of the original [.]. [GALILEI GALILEO GALILEE - MERSENNE (Marin)]
« In 1629, after some earlier approaches, Mersenne wrote to Galileo, offering his services in publishing "the new system of the motion of the earth which you have perfected, but which you cannot publish because of the prohibition of the Inquisition". Galileo did not reply to this generous offer--nor, indeed, to any of Mersenne's later letters to him. But Mersenne was not put off. He had come to see in Galileo's work a supreme illustration of the rationality of nature governed by mechanical laws and, so far as these laws went, of the true program for natural science. In 1633 he published his first critique of Galileo's Dialogo (1632) in his Traité des mouvemens et de la cheute des corps pesans et de la proportion de leurs différentes vitesses, dans lequel l'on verra plusieurs expériences trés exactes. His first response to hearing of Galileo's condemnation in that year was to agree with the need for the Church to preserve Scripture from error; yet he came forward at once with a French version (with additions of his own) of Galileo's unpublished early treatise on mechanics under the title Les méchaniques de Galilée (1634), and with a summary account of the first two days of the Dialogo and of the trial in Les questions théologiques, physiqu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris : chez Séb. Chappelet, 1634.
[Click Below for Full Description]

DAVID (Adrien);
[Click Below for Full Description]

SALA, ANGELO (ANGELUS).
- Güstrow (Rostock), Johan Hallervords, 1634. Small 8vo. Later, modest clothbacked marbled boards. (16),223,(20) pp. Very light browning and a few scattered brownspots. One leaf (pp. 143/44) loosing part of margins, but no loss of text. Scarce first edition of an importent work on the borderline of chemistry and medicine. Osler states that he "was one of the founders of modern chemistry"."Sala (following Paracelsus) defined the Spagyric Art as that part of chemistry which has for its subject the natural bodies, vegetable, animal, and mineral, and such operations as tend to the end of rendering them useful in medicine. its principal operations are separation, subtilisation, and sublimation." (Partington)."He was an able physician and an excellent chemist, an admirer and to some extent a follower of Paracelsus, an advocate of chemical remedies, an opponent of quackery, and he was able to judge fairly the merits both of the chemical and Galenic systems of medicine then in conflict. Concring calls him the first of the chemists who was free from triffling; (Ferguson)."Considering his work as a whole, it is evident that Sala was above all a practitioner. In his view, demonstrations could be carried out only through manual operations (inventionibus manualibus), that is to say, only with the aid of experimental examples, which he clearly distinguished from argumentation. For him, chemistry was still a handicraft (ars)."(DSB).Ferguson II, p. 316. - Partington II, p. 277 (the second edition 1637). - Not in Neville, Not in Duveen. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

FONTANA (Carlo)
- EDITION ORGINALE.Très belle suite d'inspiration baroque. (London): Printed for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the signe of the Beare in Pauls Church-yard, 1634. Hardcover. Good. Published 1634. 12mo, contemporary dark brown calf wth elaborate gilt floral chain-link design to both covers and spine, (18) 701 (1) pp, with engraved title page borders. Good copy, neat Japanese paper reinforcement to front inner hinge, some wear to edges of front flyleaf, contents very good, binding shows some loss of leather to bottom half inch of spine, otherwise a splendid example of this oft-published Puritan devotional manual first published in the early 1600s. This is its 32nd edition. It was a wildly popular book and an enormous influence on John Bunyan, who credits it with causing his spiritual awakening. Intact copies from the early 17th century are rare on the market as most copies were read to the point of tatters. No copy has come up for auction from before 1650 in the last several decades.
