Saadi / Ryer, André du (ed. & transl.).
Paris, Anthoine de Sommaville, 1634. Small 8vo. (8), 166 pp. (lacks final blank). Contemp. brown full calf with cover borders and edges gilt. Spine gilt. Marbled endpapers. Rare first European edition of Sa'adi's famous "Gulistan", a work in a similar tradition as the Mirrors for Magistrates. The translator, André du Ryer, was a French orientalist and consul in the Levant, notably in Alexandria and Constantinople. He returned to France in 1630 and became royal interpreter in oriental languages. He also published a Turkish grammar in 1630 and a translation of the Qur'an in 1647. Sa'adi is the most widely known Persian author in the West, and his "Gulistan" (Rose Garden), completed in 1258, was the first Persian literary work to be translated into any European language. This and later translations established Sa'adi's reputation among Western writers and inspired La Fontaine, Diderot, Voltaire, Renan, Herder, and Goethe. The present translation remained incomplete; the first complete version in a western language was the edition of the text with a Latin translation published in Amsterdam in 1651. - Spine professionally repaired in places. Provenance: Gigault de la Favière, 1768 (signature on title); Colegio de Neustra Señora de Guadalupe, Lima (blindstamp to title); Jules Becker (ink stamp on first free endpaper). DIGGES, Leonard
1634. Woodcut vignette on title, two folding printed tables, & many woodcuts in the text. 2 p.l., 26 leaves. Small 4to, later vellum (title & final leaf somewhat soiled). London: F. Kyngston, 1634. A late edition (1st ed.: 1556) of one of the four great English books on land surveying of the 16th century. Digges's Tectonicon was by far the most successful and long-lived; there were at least twenty editions, the last published in 1692. Digges (ca. 1515-59?), who attended University College, Oxford, wrote this work for "surveyors, 'landmeters,' joiners, carpenters, and masons. It taught the measurement of land, the calculation of quantities, and the use of various instruments such as the carpenter's rule, the square, and a version of the cross-staff ('the profitable staff'). Digges was at pains to correct common errors practised by those without an adequate grounding in mathematics; this theme of 'vulgar errors' became standard in many subsequent mathematical texts. The work also marks the public début of the commercial trade in mathematical ('scientific') instruments in England."-ODNB. ? D.S.B., IV, p. 97. Richeson, English Land Measuring to 1800: Instruments and Practices, p. 53-"The first five chapters give simple rules and methods for the use and application of arithmetic and geometry to the measuring of the areas of simple geometric figures; the remaining sixteen chapters, including the appendix, are primarily an application of the principles outlined in the first five chapters, along with the use and application of the various instruments at the command of the land measu … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOFFET, T.
Londini, ex Officina typographica Thom. Cotes, 1634. Folio (295 x 190mm). pp. (20), 326, (4), title-page with woodcut of a bee hive surrounded by various insects and about 500 woodcuts in the text, 4 full pages with woodcuts of insects at end. Later vellum. First edition, third issue, with the same collation as given by Lisney (Bibliography of British Lepidoptera, p. 8), who also amply describes the other issues and the interesting and complicated genesis of the work. It is the first book dealing entirely with Entomology to be published in the British Isles. "Ulysses Aldrovandi's 'De Animalibus insectis' (1602) was the first book to be devoted to insects. It was followed by Thomas Moffet's (1525-1605) 'Theatrum Insectorum' in 1634. The manuscript of this remarkable work, the first book on insects to appear in England, was actually begun before Aldrovandi's but its publication was delayed; however when it eventually appeared the book proved to be very successful and sold well. The woodcuts in the printed work are superior to those in the Aldrovandi work, and many of the butterflies can be identified" (P. Gilbert p. 2). Moffet's work remained unpublished during his lifetime, the manuscript eventuelly came into the hands of the physician and scholar, Sir Theodore de Mayerne who was able to find a publisher. Last leaf with small paper repair at the lower outer corner, the missing legs of an insect have been supplied by pendrawing. A few leaves with some tiny marginal worming. An attractive copy of this important work.Nissen ZBI, 2852. [Attributes: First Edition]

(Bayly, Lewis)
(London): Printed for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the signe of the Beare in Pauls Church-yard. Published 1634. 12mo, contemporary dark brown calf wth elaborate gilt floral chain-link design to both covers and spine, (18) 701 (1) pp, with engraved title page borders. Good copy, neat Japanese paper reinforcement to front inner hinge, some wear to edges of front flyleaf, contents very good, binding shows some loss of leather to bottom half inch of spine, otherwise a splendid example of this oft-published Puritan devotional manual first published in the early 1600s. This is its 32nd edition. It was a wildly popular book and an enormous influence on John Bunyan, who credits it with causing his spiritual awakening. Intact copies from the early 17th century are rare on the market as most copies were read to the point of tatters. No copy has come up for auction from before 1650 in the last several decades. OCLC lists one copy at Oxford (COPAC lists the same copy; ESTC S90427). Good.

GODARD, Benjamin 1849-1895
Folio (330 x 255 mm). Title + 7 pp. Notated in ink on systems with 3 staves, one for solo voice ("Chant") and two for piano, on 16-stave paper with small octagonal blindstamp of Lard-Esnault, Paris to upper inner corners. With autograph dedication to head of title: "à Madame La Comtesse Mercy d'Argenteau." With text in French. A fair copy. Slightly browned, a bit heavier at margins; some show-through; occasional smudges. Closely trimmed at lower edge, just affecting notation in several instances. Published as a separate piece by Durand & Schœnewerk in Paris [PN D.S. & Cie. 1634], [1873]). "Godard composed works in most genres with the exception of church music, but ultimately he made his reputation as a composer of salon pieces for piano and of songs, albums of which were translated into English... His early promise did not really develop in his later works, although his early death from consumption meant that he had no chance to mature fully as a composer... His songs have considerable charm and one or two numbers from his operas have survived in the repertory in their own right." Richard Langham Smith in Grove Music Online. Louise Mercy d'Argenteau (born Marie-Clotilde-Elisabeth Louise de Riquet, 1837-1890), the dedicatee, became famous for her championship of Russian nationalist composers, especially Alexander Borodin and César Cui. Auguste de Chatillon (1808-1881) was a painter and poet.

Board edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles; a.e.g A characteristic 17th century Dutch book (with its false Cologne imprint) opens with an historiated engraved title-page featuring an elegantly dressed man facing a draped skeleton holding a scythe; in the lower compartment is an angel resting one arm on a skull, with a broken hourglass and some flowers. On the verso of A2 there is a portrait of the Cardinal, facing the first page of text. Another engraving (A8 verso) depicts what must be a wake, with people eating and drinking, while in the background an angel leads a figure towards Heaven. The author of this contemplative work was a distinguished theologian, writer, and cardinal, born at Montepulciano, 4 October, 1542; died 17 September, 1621. It was first published in 1620, and editions appeared in several languages into the eighteenth century. In addition to his writings on a variety of subjects, he became involved with the early stages of the Galileo case, and when the Holy Office condemned the heliocentric theory it became Bellarmine's official duty to signify the condemnation to Galileo and receive his submission. Hafniæ (Copenhagen), Melchior Martzan, 1634. Lille 8vo. Lidt senere hldrbd. Let rygforgyldning. Rester af titeletiket. Ryg lidt slidt. (4),54,(2) pp., 1 kobberstukket planche. The very scarce first edition of one of the first elementary textbooks in arit … [Click Below for Full Description]
