[Click Below for Full Description]

DE SPADACINE (Sinibal):
A Paris, Chez Mathurin Biesmon... Small 8vo (in 4s), 163 x 100 mms., pp. 142 (?of 144), curious woodcut on verso of title-page, two full-page woodcuts of palmistry, and 22 woodcuts in text of astrological months, recently rebound, rather crudely, in quarter vellum, plain boards, ink title on spine; text occasionally just disappears into inner margin, but readable, some restoration of several leaves, a rather fragile text, and lacking the last leaf. Spadacine's work was one of the most popular and accessible of all the early 17th century French books on astrology and fortune-tellling. First published in 1606, it continued to be reprinted in various forms well into the 18th century and often issued in a size to fit a pocket. The present copy is unrecorded, not traced in any library, so it might lack more leaves than one, but the text ends on S3 and one more leaf would complete the gathering as the book is printed in half-sheets. The text, though unfinished, does contain "la cognoissance de bonne & mauvaise fortune," the last item on the title-page description of contents, complete, the last verso being "touchant le jugement."

The numbering of the leaves in the first work is a little haphazard, and the second work is pages rather than leaves. Rebound in 1958, the binders letter with the books states 'This book requires washing, mending and resizing. I should then bind in medium brown Goatskin (first grade). As near as possible to original binding (early 17th century). Price £7 15/-' A nice job he has done too. The edges of the first and last leaves have been re-enforced, and a tear to the title page has been repaired - there is also a previous owner's name at the top of the title page, dated 1827. The Goatskin has attractive blind decoartion, including a diamond pattern panel marked off in the centre of the boards. He has also attached a pair of brass clasps attached to morocco tabs. A very pleasing copy of a scarce book. Woodcuts thoughout, to the rectos of most leaves of the first work.

LAURO, GIACOMO (ROMANO).
Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, b/n, cm 19,3 x 27,6 (alla lastra). Delineta da Piero Berrettini cortonese e disegnata da Giacomo Lauro Romano. In alto a sinistra stemma mediceo a sei palle; altri stemmi poco pi? in basso, sulla destra del foglio; legenda a quarantanove voci in due riquadri sempre sulla destra, nella parte bassa; in lastra in basso a sinistra, "I. Lauro Romano f. 1694"; poco pi? a destra "Piero Berettini Cortonese delin.". [Click Below for Full Description]

Warre, James.
London: Augustine Mathewes. 1634 - Three-quarter red morocco leather and marbled boards. 16mo. The 4th edition. (12), 80, 14 pp. A very interesting anti-Catholic work in which the author list tables of scriptural citations on various topics including marriage, baptism, communion, Popish transubstantation, witchcraft, etc. On each page there are two columns which contain citations from the Old and New Testaments. The first edition of this work appeared in 1621 and the N.U.C. locates 3 copies. Other editions appeared in 1624, 1630 and 1634. Of this edition the N.U.C. locates only 4 copies. James Warre also was the author of "The Merchants hand-maide" (1632). In terms of condition this is a very good copy with some wear to the leather binding along the spine. The binding is by A.J. Cox & Co. and is probably 19th century. Internally the text is in very good condition with foxing and spotting to several pages and a tiny piece missing from the upper corner of one page. A previous owner has made several tiny ink notations to the text. This copy is bound with new endpapers and the text begins with the title page. Pages 43 has a closed tear at the bottom left corner but no text is missing. The marbled front flyleaf is detached but present. A very nice, unsophisticated copy of this rare early work.
