[Click Below for Full Description]

Homer (Homerus), & George Chapman, trans.
Printed [by Richard Field, William Jaggard, and Thomas Harper] for Nathaniell Butter [1634?], London. Chapman (1559/60?1634) completed translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey ? long considered to be the definitive English versions ? in 1611 and 1615 respectively, after several adventures as a playwright, including a short period of imprisonment with Ben Jonson for their anti-Scottish play Eastward Ho. In 1616, his two epic translations appeared with a general title-page proclaiming the volume Homer?s Works. The ESTC considers that 1616 volume to have been a ?reissue of STC 13634 [the 1611 Iliad] and 13637 [the 1615 Odyssey]" and this, the 1634 edition, to be ?a later state of STC 13624 [i.e., the 1616 Works]." The volume in hand contains a reprinting of The Iliads, The Odysses with a cancel letterpress title-page, and a cancel leaf from the dedicatory epistle of The Odysses, all printed by Thomas Harper as described in the ESTC. In simplified, perhaps less technical terms, it represents the second printing of the first collected issuance of Chapman?s Iliad and Odyssey in one volume, wherein a previous owner or dealer has substituted the engraved title-page from the 1611 edition of The Iliads for the missing engraved title-page for The Works, eliminating also five blanks! Provenance: Signature of journalist and author William Agnew Paton dated 1896 on upper margin of title-page in ink and on front endpaper dated 1898 in blue crayon; Paton also added a presentation inscription in 1911 to Lewis Buckley Stillwell, a president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers … [Click Below for Full Description]

GODARD, Benjamin 1849-1895
Published as a separate piece by Durand & Schœnewerk in Paris [PN D.S. & Cie. 1634], [1873]). "Godard composed works in most genres with the exception of church music, but ultimately he made his reputation as a composer of salon pieces for piano and of songs, albums of which were translated into English... His early promise did not really develop in his later works, although his early death from consumption meant that he had no chance to mature fully as a composer... His songs have considerable charm and one or two numbers from his operas have survived in the repertory in their own right." Richard Langham Smith in Grove Music Online. Louise Mercy d'Argenteau (born Marie-Clotilde-Elisabeth Louise de Riquet, 1837-1890), the dedicatee, became famous for her championship of Russian nationalist composers, especially Alexander Borodin and César Cui. Auguste de Chatillon (1808-1881) was a painter and poet.. Folio (330 x 255 mm). Title + 7 pp. Notated in ink on systems with 3 staves, one for solo voice ("Chant") and two for piano, on 16-stave paper with small octagonal blindstamp of Lard-Esnault, Paris to upper inner corners. With autograph dedication to head of title: "à Madame La Comtesse Mercy d'Argenteau." With text in French. A fair copy. Slightly browned, a bit heavier at margins; some show-through; occasional smudges. Closely trimmed at lower edge, just affecting notation in several instances.

(ENGRAVINGS - RELIGIOUS PORTRAITS). BINET, ESTIENNE
Anvers: Chez Martin Nutius, 1634. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 200 x 165 mm. (7 7/8 x 6 1/8"). 300, [4] pp. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Attractive 19th-century blue morocco by W. Pratt, triple gilt fillets on covers, spine gilt in compartments with cruciform centerpiece and curling vine cornerpieces, very pretty gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. WITH 40 FINE ENGRAVINGS, including an engraved title page, 38 portraits of important religious figures and saints, and a final plate depicting these personnages worshipping God in Heaven. Funck, p. 212, fig. 80 & p. 215; Brunet I, 946. See also: Bryan II, p. 210-11. Joints and corners slightly rubbed, one-inch repair to the margin of leaf N1, faint offsetting from plates (slightly heavier in a handful of cases), occasional minor marginal stains, otherwise A VERY PLEASING COPY, WITH ESPECIALLY STRONG, CLEAN IMPRESSIONS OF THE ENGRAVINGS. Offered here in an especially well-preserved copy, this work is of primary interest for its beautiful engravings done after paintings that once made the Benedictine Abbey of Liessies famous--paintings which, tragically, were either sold, given away, or destroyed during the French Revolution. All but two of the engravings seen here are portraits of important religious personages, including the obvious central figures (Christ, the Virgin, John the Baptist, the Church Fathers, etc.) as well as more recently cannonized saints such as Theresa of Avila. The prolific Étienne Binet (1569-1639), a Jesuit priest from Dijon, has supplied a short biography for each figure, as well as a list of central maxims associated … [Click Below for Full Description]

Recent full calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering. Woodcut general and New Testament titles. Tears across the lower corners of leaves Mm6, Oo3, Nnn8, Ooo2 and Qqq1 with a little loss of text on each occasion, a handful of leaves with short tears without loss, small marginal loss to the title page of the Psalmes, this work with repairs to increasing degrees to the edges of the final 10 leaves. A translation published in Geneva from 1560 onwards by exiled Protestants, notable for the colloquialism in Genesis III:7 (".and they knew that they were naked, and they sowed figge tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches") that has led to the general term "Breeches Bible", although this applies to many different editions printed over many years. Bound in at the front of this volume are 50 leaves of an incomplete, and therefore unidentifiable, contemporary Book of Common Prayer, this with late 17th century manuscript annotations on the verso of the last leaf. Cf. Herbert 199-201, but not conforming with the text sample cited in any of the three "distinct" editions. STC, 2150, 2649.

ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER MAPS OF CHINA"China' Copper engraving made by Gerard Mercator published in Amsterdam in 1634 by Jodocus Hondius. Verso Dutch text. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 34 x 47 cm. Framed.Of the lands in the Far East, China was seen as the wealthiest and most mysterious and the Jesuit missionairies were among the first to make the dangerous journey.Geographically the map is an interesting array of fact and fiction. The map contains rudimentary geographical information, as there was very little actually known of the region during the early part of the seventeenth century. The two most prominent features of this survey are the portrayal of the peninsula of Korea and the charming illustration China"s great wall, a wonder of both ancient and modern worlds. There is also a note porporting to be the location of the palace of the emperor of China. Despite the odd elongation of the country, there are attemps to show various provinces, and seven great cities such as Canton are marked. The interior of China is dominated by several large lakes and the mythical Chiamai Lacus forms the headwaters of five large rivers in northeastern India. The northwest coastline of America appears in the upper top corner with a notation that refers to the Tartar hordes (and the deer) that inhabit the region. As ever in these early maps seamonsters stalk unwary ships and Hondius shows a Dutch merchant sailing on what is labeled as "Chinensis Oceanus'. This ocean is portrayed with an elaborate and beautiful pattern which attempts to portray the movement of the waves. The islands of … [Click Below for Full Description]

1634. ______ Format : In-4. [172 x 233 mm] Collation : 52 ff. Fabre. "In Hercules Piochymicus not only the twelve labors of Hercules are interpreted alchemically but also his begetting fifty sons from the fifty daughters of Thespius in a single night and his death from the poisoned robe of Nessus. The conclusion of the all work is an anathema to those who would have alchemy made perfectly plain to fools in words of one syllable, and a request that believers in transmutation await the appearance of his Panchymicus." Thorndike, History of magic & experimental science VII, 194. Rousseurs. *-------*.

HABINGTON, William].
London, Printed by B. A. & T. F. for Will: Cooke, and are to bee sold at his Shop 1635. 12mo., pp. [16], 167, [1]; a very good copy in early nineteenth-century half green morocco and marbled boards; bookplate and monogram stamp to title-page of Sir William Grace, Baronet, purchase note(?) referring to the Hill sale of 1811. The Bradley Martin copy.Second edition, adding to the contents of the first edition (1634) a commendatory poem that reveals Habington's identity; a 'second part' with twenty-six new poems; and three prose characters: 'A Mistris' and 'A Wife' to introduce the two parts, and 'A Friend' to introduce the section of elegies on George Talbot at the end. This is the issue with the title-page to the second part dated 1635 rather than 1636.'Castara' was Lucy Herbert, daughter of William Herbert, first Baron Powis, and the wife of the author, the metaphysical Catholic poet and playwright William Habington (or Abington), a figure on the fringes of the 'Sons of Ben'. Most of the rather chaste poems here are addressed to her, written during their clandestine courtship (they married in 1633). Others are addressed to friends at the court of Charles II, such as Endymion Porter, patron of Dekker, Herrick and others. Leaf F12 is superfluous, interrupting the poem 'The Reward of Innocent Love' which starts on p. 118 and ends on p. 121 and repeating content printed elsewhere in the volume. The Grolier catalogue suggests that consequently it was 'probably cancelled in some copies', though we can find no evidence that this is the case.STC 12584; Hayward 69. SANTORIO, Santorio
Venice, Marc'antonio Brogiollo, 1634. 12mo (125 x 66 mm), ff [11] 71; a fine copy in eighteenth-century calf, gilt rules on sides, slight wear to head and tail of spine.Third edition (first 1614, virtually unobtainable) of this medical classic, the work that 'introduced quantitative experimentation into biological science' (DSB). Written in the form of aphorisms, Santorio presents his research into metabolism, then known as 'insensible perspiration'. He devised an elaborate weighing chair, and experimented on himself to determine the quantitative changes in the body, only eating and drinking while seated in his chair. Through a long series of experiments and careful record-keeping he established that a large part of excretion occurs invisibly through the skin. He employed a pulse-clock, and was the first to use a thermometer in physiological experiments; he was also the 'inventor' of the thermometer insofar as he was the first to attach a fixed scale to Galileo's thermoscope, thus making it a quantitative measuring instrument.'Through most of the 17th and 18th centuries Santorio's name was linked with that of Harvey as the greatest figure in physiology and experimental medicine because of his introduction of precision instruments for quantitative studies. He was also the founder of modern metabolic research' (Garrison and Morton n. 572.1).This is the earliest edition listed by Waller, and the second earliest in Krivatsy. Both the first and second editions are exceptionally rare.Provenance: Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840), founder of scientific anthropology (see DSB … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCULTETUS, ABRAHAM
Francofurti, Jonae Rhodii, 1634. (20) 1336 (16) p. Origineel Leer met ribben, 4° (Rug iets slijtage. Abr. Abraham Scultetus was a Calvinist. He held to the doctrines of predestination and agreed with the Synod of Dort and their doctrinal deliverances. Scultetus was a Superlapsarian, and taught that from his position as professor at Heidelberg. Scultetus denied the imputation of the active obedience of Christ following the teaching of Piscator. Scultetus was chosen as a representative of the Palatinate for the Synod of Dort. Scultetus was a prominent member of that body. He preached a sermon on 122 Psalm on 15 December, an early honor given to him by the Synod. He also gave an address on the “Certainty of Grace” that apparently showed him to be a gifted speaker. Some of held that Scultetus was the most prominent foreigner at the Synod along with George Carleton, Bishop of Llandaff from England. He agreed with the condemnation of the Remonstrants and the doctrinal decrees of the Synod.)

[Click Below for Full Description]

Saadi / Ryer, Andre du (ed. & transl.).
Paris, Anthoine de Sommaville, 1634.. Small 8vo. (8), 166 pp. (lacks final blank). Contemp. brown full calf with cover borders and edges gilt. Spine gilt. Marbled endpapers.. Rare first European edition of Sa'adi's famous "Gulistan", a work in a similar tradition as the Mirrors for Magistrates. The translator, Andre du Ryer, was a French orientalist and consul in the Levant, notably in Alexandria and Constantinople. He returned to France in 1630 and became royal interpreter in oriental languages. He also published a Turkish grammar in 1630 and a translation oif the Qur'an in 1647. Sa'adi is the most widely known Persian author in the West, and his "Gulistan" (Rose Garden), completed in 1258, was the first Persian literary work to be translated into any European language. This and later translations established Sa'adi's reputation among Western writers and inspired La Fontaine, Diderot, Voltaire, Renan, Herder, and Goethe. The present translation remained incomplete; the first complete version in a western language was the edition of the text with a Latin translation published in Amsterdam in 1651. - Spine-ends damaged; extremeties worn; hinges split. Provenance: Gigault de la Faviere, 1768 (signature on title); Colegio de Neustra Senora de Guadalupe, Lima (blindstamp to title); Jules Becker (ink stamp on first free endpaper).
