[Amsterdam: between -1636]. Radierung (gut erhalten, kaum fleckig, kleine hinterlegte Risse in der Falte) / Etching (Very Good, with minor staining and small repaired tears in the fold) 43 x 58 cm (16.9 x 22.8 inches). A rare large separately published bird's eye view was published by a Dutch cartographer Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode. --A rare separately published large etching shows the battle of Nördlingen, fought on September 5 and 6 1634 at Nördlingen in Bavaria (Swabia) during the Thirty Years' War, between the Catholic Spanish - Austrian troops against the Protestant Swedish and German army. The Spanish and Austrian army under the leadership of Ferdinand of Austria (169 or 1610 - 1641) and Ferdinand of Hungary (1608 – 1657), later Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III., defeated the Protestant army. The view was engraved by Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode (Delft, 1591-1645), who came from a family of mapmakers and was a son of Floris Balthasar van Berckenrode (1562/63 - 1616), who worked in the circle of the Dutch statesman Johan van Oldebarnevelt. Around 1600 Floris Balthasar started making maps, which could be useful for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Moffet
Londini: Ex officina typographica Thom. Cotes, 1634 A fair copy of the first printing of Insectorum Theatrum, classed as 'fair' because the title page and final plate page are in facsimile. The title page is that of the 3rd issue with a single printer named, but the book itself is 1st issue with page numbering at p 48 corrected in manuscript. This work was the first book on entomology to be published in Britain, and, although credited largely to Thomas Moffet (1553-1604), began as part of Conrad Gesner's researches in the mid 1500's. Thomas Penny and Caspar Wolf continued the work after Gesner's death, and Moffet, who was a neighbour and friend of Penny's, rescued the manuscript after Penny's death. It was finally published after Moffet's death by Theodore Mayerne (cf Lisney - Bibliography of British Lepidoptera). This copy has contemporary boards, rebacked with a newer spine and title label. The binding is in very good clean condition: there is wear to the boards but the corners have been repaired. Newer endpapers have been provided and there is a bookplate of Paul Sokoloff, and a smaller plate of Basil Harley to the front pastedown. The facsmile title page is 3rd issue and has some staining. CROON, Petrus.
BNCI 12057; Scheurleer, Liedboeken, p. 74; STCV (3 copies); WorldCat (3 other copies). Rare first and only edition of a devotional and educational work written by Petrus Croon (1634-1682), a regular canon and literary author from Louvain, Belgium. The work was intended to serve as a gift for the new year, and contains emblematic poetry about candles, candlesticks, candlestands, candle-snuffers, and all things to do with candles, traditionally lit on New Year's Eve. The emblematic verses and songs are interwoven with explanatory text in prose. At the end a new song called "domp-horentje" (little candle-snuffer) is set to music and accompanied by printed musical notation. The charming little book proves that the text of emblematic verse can invoke images so well that no pictures are needed. And without engravings the New Year's gift would be less expensive for young people. As a convinced Roman Catholic, Croon wanted to educate and edify his readers by way of amusing verse, emblems, riddles, proverbs, and the like. With bookplate and owner's stamps. Only slightly browned, with a very small restoration on the lower outer corner of page 63/64. In very good condition.

Pliny, the Elder.
1634. Folio (235 x 320 mm). 2 vols. in one. (58), 614, (42) pp. (12), 632, (86) pp. Elaborate woodcut device on title-page; woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemp. calf, spine in six compartments, tooled and lettered in gilt. Pliny's renowned Natural History in its second publication in English (repeating, with corrections, the 1601 first publication), translated by Philemon Holland, the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age. The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to the author. Pliny claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 books in 10 volumes and covered over 20.000 facts on topics including the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy, geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Some technical advances he discusses are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding corn. Much of what he wrote about has been confirmed by archaeology. ''We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf [...] Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [... He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised [.. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saadi / Ryer, André du (ed. & transl.).
1634. Small 8vo. (8), 166 pp. (lacks final blank). Contemp. brown full calf with cover borders and edges gilt. Spine gilt. Marbled endpapers. Rare first European edition of Sa'adi's famous "Gulistan", a work in a similar tradition as the Mirrors for Magistrates. The translator, André du Ryer, was a French orientalist and consul in the Levant, notably in Alexandria and Constantinople. He returned to France in 1630 and became royal interpreter in oriental languages. He also published a Turkish grammar in 1630 and a translation of the Qur'an in 1647. Sa'adi is the most widely known Persian author in the West, and his "Gulistan" (Rose Garden), completed in 1258, was the first Persian literary work to be translated into any European language. This and later translations established Sa'adi's reputation among Western writers and inspired La Fontaine, Diderot, Voltaire, Renan, Herder, and Goethe. The present translation remained incomplete; the first complete version in a western language was the edition of the text with a Latin translation published in Amsterdam in 1651. - Spine professionally repaired in places. Provenance: Gigault de la Favière, 1768 (signature on title); Colegio de Neustra Señora de Guadalupe, Lima (blindstamp to title); Jules Becker (ink stamp on first free endpaper). Last in the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). Zenker, BO I, p. 60, no. 491. Schwab 1009. Brunet V, 25. Cioranescu XVII, 27953.

TASSIN (Christophe).
[1634]. 523 x 373 mm. Pastoureau, TASSIN II A.

BE … [Click Below for Full Description]

RONDINELLI (FRANCESCO) :
In Firenza, Gio : Batista Landini, 1634 ; in 4º, vélin de l'époque, titre manuscrit au dos ; [16], 284, [4] pp. ; (signatures :  ,   , A-Z, Aa-Nn4). Edition originale rare.

1634. Acquaforte, puntasecca e bulino, 1634, firmato e datato in lastra in basso a destra. Etching, drypoint and engraving, 1634, signed and dated in plate at lower right. Example in the third final state, with the shadows on the tree added. A beautiful impression, printed on laid paper without watermark, with marg … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Homer (Homerus), & George Chapman, trans.
Printed [by Richard Field, William Jaggard, and Thomas Harper] for Nathaniell Butter. Chapman (1559/60-1634) completed translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey -- long considered to be the definitive English versions -- in 1611 and 1615 respectively, after several adventures as a playwright, including a short period of imprisonment with Ben Jonson for their anti-Scottish play Eastward Ho. In 1616, his two epic translations appeared with a general title-page proclaiming the volume Homer's Works. The ESTC considers that 1616 volume to have been a "reissue of STC 13634 [the 1611 Iliad] and 13637 [the 1615 Odyssey]" and this, the 1634 edition, to be "a later state of STC 13624 [i.e., the 1616 Works]." The volume in hand contains a reprinting of The Iliads, The Odysses with a cancel letterpress title-page, and a cancel leaf from the dedicatory epistle of The Odysses, all printed by Thomas Harper as described in the ESTC. In simplified, perhaps less technical terms, it represents the second printing of the first collected issuance of Chapman's Iliad and Odyssey in one volume, wherein a previous owner or dealer has substituted the engraved title-page from the 1611 edition of The Iliads for the missing engraved title-page for The Works, eliminating also five blanks! Provenance: Signature of journalist and author William Agnew Paton dated 1896 on upper margin of title-page in ink and on front endpaper dated 1898 in blue crayon; Paton also added a presentation inscription in 1911 to Lewis Buckley Stillwell, a president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and … [Click Below for Full Description]

GODARD, Benjamin 1849-1895
Published as a separate piece by Durand & Schœnewerk in Paris [PN D.S. & Cie. 1634], [1873]). "Godard composed works in most genres with the exception of church music, but ultimately he made his reputation as a composer of salon pieces for piano and of songs, albums of which were translated into English... His early promise did not really develop in his later works, although his early death from consumption meant that he had no chance to mature fully as a composer... His songs have considerable charm and one or two numbers from his operas have survived in the repertory in their own right." Richard Langham Smith in Grove Music Online. Louise Mercy d'Argenteau (born Marie-Clotilde-Elisabeth Louise de Riquet, 1837-1890), the dedicatee, became famous for her championship of Russian nationalist composers, especially Alexander Borodin and César Cui. Auguste de Chatillon (1808-1881) was a painter and poet.. Folio (330 x 255 mm). Title + 7 pp. Notated in ink on systems with 3 staves, one for solo voice ("Chant") and two for piano, on 16-stave paper with small octagonal blindstamp of Lard-Esnault, Paris to upper inner corners. With autograph dedication to head of title: "à Madame La Comtesse Mercy d'Argenteau." With text in French. A fair copy. Slightly browned, a bit heavier at margins; some show-through; occasional smudges. Closely trimmed at lower edge, just affecting notation in several instances.

(ENGRAVINGS - RELIGIOUS PORTRAITS). BINET, ESTIENNE
Anvers: Chez Martin Nutius, 1634. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Offered here in an especially well-preserved copy, this work is of primary interest for its beautiful engravings done after paintings that once made the Benedictine Abbey of Liessies famous--paintings which, tragically, were either sold, given away, or destroyed during the French Revolution. All but two of the engravings seen here are portraits of important religious personages, including the obvious central figures (Christ, the Virgin, John the Baptist, the Church Fathers, etc.) as well as more recently cannonized saints such as Theresa of Avila. The prolific Étienne Binet (1569-1639), a Jesuit priest from Dijon, has supplied a short biography for each figure, as well as a list of central maxims associated with them, in order to encourage contemplation by the reader. The radiant plates promote this same spirit of meditation and communicate the distinct personalities of their subjects, thanks to the remarkable talents of the designer who studied the original paintings, Theodor Galle (1571-1633), and the engraver who brought them to life, Cornelis Galle (1576-1656). These two artists were brothers, born into a famous Belgian family of engravers. They learned the craft from their father, Phillip, and later in Italy, where they studied the Masters and perfected their art. Back in Antwerp, Cornelis and Theodor both became prominent members of society and found success and prosperity in their careers: Theodor was master of his guild in Antwerp, where, according to Bryan, "he held a commanding position" and for 33 years s … [Click Below for Full Description]
