Occasional contemporary underlinings & marginalia, more so in the first 2 books of the Annales) (Note: The Roman historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus offered ammunition for many intellectual and political battles in 16th and 17th century Europe. The turmoil caused by the emerging new monarchies in England, France en Spain, civil and religious wars in Italy and Germany, and the plague, made Tacitus' account of the state of the early Roman Empire increasingly topical and relevant. Sallustius Gaius Crispus.
Amsterdam: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1634. Amsterdam:: Ex Officina Elzeviriana,, 1634.. 12mo.. *8, A-O12, P4. Full old vellum, title on spine in manuscript. Blue speckled edges. Few minor stains, first blank started. Bookplate on front pastedown. Ink drawings, old hand, on rear pastedown and verso of final blank; notations, in old hand, on verso of final three blanks. A very nice copy. Engraved t.p., coin portrait of Sallust faces A1. Engraved initials, head and tail pieces. Interesting contemporary original ink drawing at end, perhaps as a sample cut, in Dutch-Greek, of an erotic and humorous nature. Should be looked further into. Sallust histories, regarding the Catalinian conspiracy and the Jurgurthine War, are important sources for the last days of the Republic. They create a style for Roman historiography, based upon Thucydides and Cato the Elder, and bore considerable influence upon Tacitus.

[24], 131 [1]; [2], 17 [1]; [12], 112 pp. Woodcut headbands and initials, separate half titles to all parts. Provenance: Verdeil (inscribed on title-page). Still a fine, wide-margined copy. ---- VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. Marin Cureau de La Chambre (1594-1669), largly known for his work in physiognomy, was personal physician to the Chancelier Seguier, who was his patron, and then to the King. He was consulted by Louis XIV as to questions of physiognomy, when new employees were being considered. The present work, a philosophical mixture about the causes of light, the flooding of the Nile, and the love of inclination is Le Chambre's earliest publication. Although this work is questionably from a scientific standpoint (Le Chambre considered light as a quality and attributed the Nile floods to the fermentation of nitre), it is nevertheless remarkable as it was written in French vernacular at a time when textbooks were written in Lat … [Click Below for Full Description]

ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER MAPS OF CHINA?China? Copper engraving made by Gerard Mercator published in Amsterdam in 1634 by Jodocus Hondius. Verso Dutch text. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 34 x 47 cm.Of the lands in the Far East, China was seen as the wealthiest and most mysterious and the Jesuit missionairies were among the first to make the dangerous journey.Geographically the map is an interesting array of fact and fiction. The map contains rudimentary geographical information, as there was very little actually known of the region during the early part of the seventeenth century. The two most prominent features of this survey are the portrayal of the peninsula of Korea and the charming illustration China?s great wall, a wonder of both ancient and modern worlds. There is also a note porporting to be the location of the palace of the emperor of China. Despite the odd elongation of the country, there are attemps to show various provinces, and seven great cities such as Canton are marked. The interior of China is dominated by several large lakes and the mythical Chiamai Lacus forms the headwaters of five large rivers in northeastern India. The northwest coastline of America appears in the upper top corner with a notation that refers to the Tartar hordes (and the deer) that inhabit the region. As ever in these early maps seamonsters stalk unwary ships and Hondius shows a Dutch merchant sailing on what is labeled as ?Chinensis Oceanus?. LAURO, GIACOMO (ROMANO) - BERETTINI, PIERO (PiETRO DA CORTONA).
Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, b/n, cm 19,3 x 27,6 (alla lastra). [Click Below for Full Description]

CROON, Petrus.
- BNCI 12057; Scheurleer, Liedboeken, p. 74; STCV (3 copies); WorldCat (3 other copies). Rare first and only edition of a devotional and educational work written by Petrus Croon (1634-1682), a regular canon and literary author from Louvain, Belgium. The work was intended to serve as a gift for the new year, and contains emblematic poetry about candles, candlesticks, candlestands, candle-snuffers, and all things to do with candles, traditionally lit on New Year's Eve. The emblematic verses and songs are interwoven with explanatory text in prose. At the end a new song called "domp-horentje" (little candle-snuffer) is set to music and accompanied by printed musical notation. The charming little book proves that the text of emblematic verse can invoke images so well that no pictures are needed. And without engravings the New Year's gift would be less expensive for young people. As a convinced Roman Catholic, Croon wanted to educate and edify his readers by way of amusing verse, emblems, riddles, proverbs, and the like. With bookplate and owner's stamps. Only slightly browned, with a very small restoration on the lower outer corner of page 63/64. In very good condition.

FABRE, Pierre Jean
Toulouse, Pierre Bosc, 1634. Fabre. "In Hercules Piochymicus not only the twelve labors of Hercules are interpreted alchemically but also his begetting fifty sons from the fifty daughters of Thespius in a single night and his death from the poisoned robe of Nessus. The conclusion of the all work is an anathema to those who would have alchemy made perfectly plain to fools in words of one syllable, and a request that believers in transmutation await the appearance of his Panchymicus." Printed for Walter Burre, 1634. Printed for Walter Burre,. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1634. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Engravings; Frontis date 1614 but appears to conform to ESTC points for 1634. Armorial book plate of Baron De Loon. 8 folding maps and plans often with repairs. Includes "Chronologicall table". Presumed 4th edition. Written during his imprisonment in the Tower of London, the History . Of the World is Sir Walter Raleigh's most important prose work. The book, originally intended as a multivolume project, covers the creation of the world to 146BC and aims to show history as a moral exercise. Initially, the work was intended to serve as an educational tool for Henry, Prince of Wales (1594-1612) and includes numerous references to warfare, law and kingship. Although Raleigh was imprisoned for treason, the book, due to its association with the Prince was entered on the Stationer's list of approved books in 1611 but following Henry's death in 1612, Raleigh was forced to bring the project to conclusion. The work, consisting of five books nearing one million words in total, was eventually published in 1614. The cynical nature of the work, and the contempt to which Raleigh holds monarchs throughout history brought the book to the attention of James I and the Archbishop of Canterbury, George Abbot, who immediately demanded copies to be seized and publication banned. These actions only served to increase demand. 8.5 x 12.75" bound in contemporary leather and [sympathetically rebacked later]. [40], 184, 181-555, [1] 510, 515-669, [1] [2] [20].
