Altogether 145 plates. ¶Hans Vredeman de Vries (Ioannes Frisius) (1526-1609), was the main propagator of renaissance architecture in Northern Europe. His publications were used as 'model-boeken' by many architects and artists of the time. The plates are by Vredeman himself, his son Paul, Hendrik Hondius a.o. After the more technical plates in the Perspectiva the plates in the Architectura show buildings, squares, interiors, gardens etc. in an idealized renaissance setting. DONNE, John.
London: by E.P. for Henry Seyle, 1633. 2 works bound in 1, quarto (186 × 137 mm). Contemporary calf, skilfully rebacked and relined to style, covers with three-line blind rules, edges speckled red, manuscript shelf number to fore-edge. Housed in a dark brown flat back cloth solander box. Skilful restoration to board edges, small spot of worm damage to lower cover, contents slightly toned, edges of last few leaves browned from turn-ins, an excellent copy. First edition of the principal collection of Donne's poetical works, issued two years after his death, here bound together with the first edition of his Juvenilia. This copy of Poems has the two inserted leaves with "The Printer to the Understanders" and Hexastichon Bibliopolae, not always present, and has the leaf Nn1 in the earlier uncorrected state with 35 lines of text on p. 273 instead of 30 or 31, with omission of the usual running headline. The editor of this first edition evidently made use of more than one group of surviving manuscripts. While he made a number of minor changes on his own authority, the 1633 Poems remains the best early text of the most important of all metaphysical poetry collections, including "To Sir Henry Wotton" ("Bee thine own Palace, or the world's thy g[ao]le"), "The Good Morrow", "Song" ("Goe, and catche a falling starre"), "The Sunne Rising", "Aire and Angels", "Loves growth", and "The Flea". Grolier L-W 286; Hayward 54; Keynes 78; STC 7045. [Attributes: First Edition]

(MERCURE FRANÇOIS).
Paris: Estienne Richer, 1633.

Occasional spotting, scattered pencil marginalia. From the personal library of Mr. Thomas Creed, who came to the US from England and founded Creed's Book Store in 1923.
An early edition of Bacon's important book on the history of science, scientific philosophy, logic and rationalism.

"Bacon's major contribution to the development of science lies in his natural philosophy, his philosophy of scientific method, and in his projects for the practical organization of science. During the last years of his life, he expounded these ideas in a series of works, of which the Twoo bookes was the first. The only work Bacon ever published in English, it was later expanded and Latinized into De augmentis scientiarum (1623). In the Twoo bookes, Bacon concerned himself primarily with the classification of philosophy and the sciences and with developing his influential view of the relation between science and theology. While preserving the traditional distinction between knowledge obtained by divine revelation and knowledge acquired through the senses, Bacon saw both theoretical and applied science as religious duties, the first for a greater knowledge of God through his creation, and the second for the practice of charity to one's fellows by improving their condit … [Click Below for Full Description]

The work arose out of discussions between Briggs, professor of geometry at Gresham College, and the great Scots mathematician John Napier, the inventor of logarithms, who in 1614 had published his 'Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio'. Napier agreed to suggestions by Briggs for adapting his invention more readily to the construction of tables, and the result, entailing prodigious labour, was Briggs's 'Arithmetica Logarithmica' (1624) and the present work. It is clear that the scale of logarithms now in use, in which 1 is the logarithm of the ratio 10 … [Click Below for Full Description]
