Lemnius, Levinus.
London: Printed by E[lizabeth] A[llde] for Michael Sparke, 1633. 4to (18.5 cm, 7.5"). [4] ff., 248 pp., [5 (of 6)] ff., without the final blank. De habitu et constitutione corporis was first printed in 1561 and is from the pen of Levinus Lemnius (1505–68), who received his medical degree from Padua, studied with Vesalius, was a friend of Dodoens and Gesner, and practiced in his hometown of Zirichne. This English translation of his work uses "complexion" in an archaic way that is explained by Hunter and Macalpine: "By complexion was meant the combination of 'qualities' such as hot and cold, moist and dry, and of the four humours in certain proportion which together made up a person's physical and mental temperament or habit; this in turn determined the diseases to which he was liable and the rules which preserved his health. This ancient pathophysiology was fully expounded by Lemiius. . . . [In order to avoid forgetfulness, dotage, lack of right wits, doltishness, idiocy, and the like], Lemnius recommended shaving the beard as much as a matter almost of mental as physical hygiene, and on the same lines advanced the ancient method of treating diseases of the head and so also of the mind by shaving the head to allow the 'grosse vapours' offending the brain to 'fume oute.' Although even in his time many considered this practice a 'vayne and absurde fable' it continued in widespread use as a treatment of insanity for more than three centuries" (p. 22) This is the third English-language edition, following the first of 1576 and the second of 1581, and it was also the last un … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary dark brown calf, rebacked and recornered to style, raised bands, later brown morocco label. Printer's device on title page. Keynes 43; STC 7043; Wither to Prior 284. Calf a little mottled on covers, lower cover with a dozen small (neatly repaired) defects, but the binding sound and very pleasing; first and last leaves with faint offsetting to margins from turn-in glue, lower corner of G4 cleanly cut off (well away from text), otherwise A VERY FINE COPY INTERNALLY, quite clean, fresh, and bright. This is the first printing of Donne's earliest works of prose, called by Keynes "clever and entertaining trifles" that date prior to 1600, "during the more wanton period of their author's life." The great poet and divine examines 11 paradoxes, including "A Defence of Womens Inconstancy," "That Women ought to Paint," and "That the gifts of the Body are better than those of the Minde," as well as 10 problems, among them "Why have Bastards best Fortunes," "Why Puritans make long Sermons," and "Why are the Fairest falsest." Although manuscript copies had circulated during Donne's lifetime, like his erotic love poetry, they were not published until after his death in 1631. Even then, publisher Henry Herbert was called before the Star Chamber to answer for what Keynes calls "their rather free nature … [Click Below for Full Description]

PASQUIER
*** [Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. London: Aug. Mathewes for Robert Milbourne, 1633. Full leather binding rebound using the old boards, with a new spine and labels. Front board a little scuffed, rear board less good, the leather rather scored, but worth retaining. New endpapers inside, with old bookplate Richard Hopton(?). Text complete up to page 390, which I think means it is missing the last page, 391. There are 17 maps and prints listed in the contents. Two of these are missing here: No. 9, the siege of Kinsale, and no. 17 the map of Corke. The map of Munster at the front by Speed is missing its right hand half, so only half is present, which includes the town plan of Limerick. The print no. 16 of Yough-hall is also missing one half. Two of the remaining prints have suffered some damage, needing repairs with a little loss: print no. 2 (Ormond taken prisoner) and 5 (Castle Glin). These repairs have been done neatly without any attempt at facsimile of the missing portions. All the other prints are present (2 prints forming Carigfoyle no. 6), in good condition. [Click Below for Full Description]

The Geneva version in quarto with Tomson's New Testament and with Junius Revelation. This is in most respects a reprint of the previous quarto Geneva Bibles in roman type but the title pages are unique and new and Junius Revelation here displaces Tomson's version of that book. From this point forward Junius version appears in most of the folios and all subsequent roman letter quarto bibles. A very attractive and exceptionally clean and antique styesolid copy of this Elizabethan Geneva Breeches bible rarely found complete in its entirety. This copy is lightly browned throughout with minor marks and blemishes. Two leaves with minor loss. The Bible remains found in its original period binding of full contemporary paneled calf. It has recently been rebacked in antique style with old calf relaid to the original boards. This copy collates complete and perfect including the first of the two General Title pages engraved and printed, the engraved NT title page and the printed title to Psalms. Paris: Societatis Typographic Librorum Officii Ecclesiastici ..., 1633. Engraved title, numerous small and large engraved vignettes, head-and tail-pieces, one full-page engraving; text printed in black, running headlines and chapter headings in red, numerous large decorated initial capitals. 1 vols. Folio. Bound by The French Binders, 1934. Beautifully bound in full red morocco by The French Binders, successors to The Club Bindery, and signed on the rear turn in by two of the firm's most distinguished binders, Henry Hardy and Gaston Pilon. The French Binders traces its lineage back to The Club Bindery, founded in 1895 by members of the Grolier Club to provide exceptionally fine bindings for American collectors. The Club Bindery moved to Cleveland, where it was successively renamed the Rowfant Bindery (1909-1913), the Booklover's Shop (1914-1917), and finally, The French Binders (1918-1920s), as in-house bindery to Doubelday in Garden City, New York. Henry Hardy worked for all incarnations of the bindery, starting with The Club Bindery; his brother-in-law, Gaston Pilon worked with Chambolle-Duru in Paris, and came over to America to join the Rowfant Bindery. Both Hardy and Pilon were named Officers of the French Academy in 1933, the highest recognition given by the French government to naturalized Americans (see Martin Antonetti's essay in Bound to Be the Best: The Club Bindery). Provenance: Estelle Doheny (red morocco booklabel); Carl C. Kalbfleisch (brown morocco booklabel). First Complete Scottish King James Bible and First Edinburgh Book of Common Prayer. An uncommon lot, including the first complete King James Bible printed in Scotland, and the first Edinburgh edition of the Book of Common Prayer. The Bible follows a separate printing of the New Testament in 1628. This edition, it is suggested, was printed in connection with the Coronation of Charles I in Edinburgh in June 1633. Some copies of this printing of the New Testament were accompanied by plates, but these were later additions (ca. 1638), and there are two settings of some of the sheets, which are frequently comingled. In this copy, the catchword at 3G1 is "But"; 2F6v has the reading "carkases"; the catchword at 3G1r is "37 But"; and the headline on 3K3r is "Of Widows." The Book of Common Prayer is the form with catchword "pride" at B1r, and anticipates the ill-fated 1637 revision for the Church of Scotland. The editions of Genealogies, the Concordance, and the Psalms are contemporary editions of the sort that are characteristically found bound wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

FORTIFICATION MANUSCRIPT].
, . . An extensive manuscript manual on fortification in French, discussing the design, construction and defence of a wide variety of regular and irregular fortifications, gates, bridges, etc., and with chapters on attacking fortifications, mines and other subjects. It is extensively illustrated, including many full-page or folding fortification plans, with one folding fortification plan and one folding cross-section of fortifications in colour. The text notes in several places that it is based on the work of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), so it was almost certainly written after he began to publish his work on fortification in 1673, and probably no earlier than the 1680s, when he fully developed his methods and published more detailed works on fortification. Although written in French it seems likely to come from northern Germany.Much of the paper is slightly browned, and the ink has left a shadow on the back of the pages or the facing pages. The corner of one leaf was restored before the manuscript was written. One leaf is detached, and some of the slips extending the margins have come partly loose. There is a long tear along the fold of 1 folding leaf and worm holes in the gutter margin of about 30 leaves, not affecting the text or drawings. Most leaves are in good condition. The binding is shabby and somewhat loose, with the spine damaged, the edges tattered and the whole rubbed. An interesting illustrated manuscript fortifications manual.

In Venetia, appresso Marco Ginanni, M.DC.XXXIII e M.DC.XXXIV (1633 e 1634). 2 opere in un volume in-4 (mm.220x170), parte prima: pp. (12), 780. ANON]
London: By the Deputies of Christopher Barker 1633. A very nice copy of Barker’s edition of the Geneva Bible. Complete. Old Testament in two parts, New Testament, Metrical Psalms. With the engraved title pages and all other engravings and cuts as outlined in Darlow & Moule. This is a difficult item to correctly date, D&M devoted pages to it. Having compared the lines we concur "The whole investigation seems to show that these editions of the Geneva-Tomson were published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort, and adopted afterwards by Barker, who affixed the date 1599 because this was a well known and popular edition." (p117) This copy states it was printed in 1599. It most closely collates with "Lea Wilson’s No 5 of this series" As with most copies listed, the Apocrypha is listed in the contents, but not present. Some marginalia, with a family account of a marriage and ten children born between 1759 and 1779. The book of Common prayer is a nice copy, with some signatures to the title page and end papers. Contains the Almanac, proper lessons etc: it is followed by another copy of the Psalms. (Collected by Thomas Sternhold & John Hopkins). The binding is a solid, if unexciting full leather binding, a little rubbed, and with the leather clasps now gone. The leather label to the spine (fairly recent) states "book of Common Prayer". A little darkening and some marks consistent with age, but overall in very good condition. A leaf of the feast days for 1757 has been laid into the rear inside board. 230 by 180mm (9 by 7 inches). Book of Common Prayer: A-H6; Old Testament: *4, A- … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joseph Scaliger, Robert Stephan, Richard Whittake, Isaac Casaubon
London: Apud [B. and A. Elzevir for] Richardum Whittakerum, bibliopolam, M D C XXXIII - Richard Whittaker, 1633 Book. Very Good. Leather Bound. 1st Edition. [8] pp 459 [13] Sombre-bound Greek New Testament with attractive and most unusual late seventeenth century cut-work decoration to the goatskin covered boards, all edges black. Octavo format with triple blind ruled panels, two blind binder's devices and a central oval and floral cut-work decoration with floral and tulip designs to the corners. Marbled end-papers, printed text-block trimmed, sometimes touching signatures. Light staining to a few pages, backstrip probably reinforced internally with glue. Late eighteenth century ownership stamp to first blank of 'W. M Atkins'. This Greek New Testament was printed in Leiden by Elzevir for Richard Whittaker whose London address is given for the imprint. The first four words of the title in Greek are Romanised with an engraved printer's device below. The text, with its introduction by Whittaker and the Elzevir printer, forms part of the post-Reformation quest for an acceptable and intellectually plausible version of the New Testament in Greek. A fashion for sombre bindings existed around the fifty years from 1675 to 1725; this example is both unusual and very beautiful.
