Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn)
Rembrandt inventor et feecit [sic]: 1633. Large 4to, 255 x 207 mm. A fine impression with ample margins outside the plate mark, on paper with a foolscap watermark. Archivally framed. § This etching depicts the final scene in the parable of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) in which the Samaritan stopped to help a traveler who had been attacked by robbers. Here he has brought the wounded man on horseback to an inn and pays for the man's care and lodging. The is one of only two etchings in which Rembrandt reproduced his own paintings; the other is Christ Before Pilate. The Good Samaritan repeats with a number of variations the composition of his painting in the Wallace Collection, London. Among Rembrandt's additions here to the largely empty foreground that appeared in the painting is the defecating dog that adds a note of everyday reality to the biblical scene. Provenance: Albertina (Lugt 5d) released as a duplicate: Robert Dumesnil (Lugt 2200); private collection USA from Paul McCarron c. 1970 (p.o.r.).

ROSSETTI, Donato.
Rare first edition of a handbook of physics, including optics, mechanics, fluid dynamics and cosmography, illustrated with numerous woodcut diagrams and other illustrations in the text. It was written by Donato Rossetti, professor of natural philosophy at Pisa, in the wake of Galileo's 1633 trial for promoting the heliocentric theory of the solar system. Rossetti later became tutor in mathematics to the Duke of Savoy and professor of mathematics at Turin. The book is a refutation of Geminiano Montanari's Pensieri fisico-matematici (Bologna 1667). In the period shortly after Galileo, experimentalists like Montanari (1633-1675) engaged in a battle against the more mystical views of scientists such as Rossetti. With an early Italian owner's inscription on the title-page. In very good condition, with only a couple small marginal holes in the title-page. The parchment has a couple stains and a couple holes in the spine, but is otherwise very good.BMC STC Italian, p. 796; Poggendorff II, col. 700; Riccardi I, R-col. 394; Thorndike VII, p. 583; not in Honeyman..

John Donne
London: Printed By Elizabeth Purslowe for Henry Seyle, 1633. IUUENILIA: OR CERTAINE PARADOXES AND PROBLEMES. LONDON: PRINTED BY E[LIZABETH]. P[URSLOWE]. FOR HENRY SEYLE, AND ARE TO BE SOLD AT THE SIGNE OF THE TYGERS HEAD, IN SAINT PAULS CHURCHYARD, 1633. 4to (7 1/4 x 5 3/8 in.; 185 x 136 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title-page copied from the Estiennes (McKerrow 311), a profusion of wood- and metal-cut initials and woodcut and typographic head- and tailpieces, with initial blank A1; a bit of marginal darkening. Top spine torn (see photos). Very pleasing copy. First edition, with licenses to print on both F1v and H4v. "Donne's Juvenilia are clever and entertaining trifles, most of which were probably written before 1600 during the more wanton period of the author's life. His own opinion of them was expressed in a letter to Sir Henry Wooton in 1600: ... 'they were made rather to deceave tyme than her daughter truth'" (Keynes). Although these Paradoxes and Problemes were widely circulated in manuscript, their secular, if not vulgar, character prevented them from being published during the author's lifetime. The catalogue of the Grolier Club's quatrocentenary exhibition of Donne mentions that while copies of both the first and second editions of Juvenilia are frequently found bound with the 1633 edition of Donne's Poems, "copies bound separately in contemporary bindings are rare.". [MANUSCRIPT - FORTIFICATION].
[1], [3 blank], 164 pp., ll. 165-171, [172], pp. 173-197, 197 [bis], 198-289, [24 blank, partly numbered].An extensive manuscript manual on fortification in French, discussing the design, construction and defence of a wide variety of regular and irregular fortifications, gates, bridges, etc., and with chapters on attacking fortifications, mines and other subjects. It is extensively illustrated, including many full-page or folding fortification plans, with one folding fortification plan and one folding cross-section of fortifications in colour. The text notes in several places that it is based on the work of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), so it was almost certainly written after he began to publish his work on fortification in 1673, and probably no earlier than the 1680s, when he fully developed his methods and published more detailed works on fortification. Although written in French it seems likely to come from northern Germany.Much of the paper is slightly browned, and the ink has left a shadow on the back of the pages or the facing pages. The corner of one leaf was restored before the manuscript was written. One leaf is detached, and some of the slips extending the margins have come partly loose. There is a long tear along the fold of 1 folding leaf and worm holes in the gutter margin of about 30 leaves, not affecting the text or drawings. Most leaves are in good condition. The binding is shabby and somewhat loose, with the spine damaged, the edges tattered and the whole rubbed. An interesting illustrated manuscript fortifications manual.

(44p.) 1319pp. (32p.) [Click Below for Full Description]

[FORTIFICATION MANUSCRIPT].
An extensive manuscript manual on fortification in French, discussing the design, construction and defence of a wide variety of regular and irregular fortifications, gates, bridges, etc., and with chapters on attacking fortifications, mines and other subjects.

London: Adam Islip, Joice Norton & Richard Whitakers, 1633. Folio. (13 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches). [36], 1630, [48] pp., lacks preliminary and terminal blanks. Engraved architectural title by John Payne showing Theophrastus and Dioscorides, Ceres and Pomona. Approximately 2,760 woodcuts in text, numerous woodcut initials. Early calf, bordered in blind, expertly rebacked, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, tooled and lettered in gilt. Housed in a cloth box. Provenance: early (Irish?) botanist or apothecary (manuscript marginalia throughout); Thomas Story (signature on the dedication leaf). The preferred second edition of Gerard's "Herbal," the first edition of Thomas Johnson's expanded version with over 2,760 woodcuts: with interesting marginalia and provenance. Gerard was superintendent of the gardens of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, one of the most influential members of the court of Elizabeth I. In addition to his work for Lord Burghley, Gerard also raised many exotic plants in his own gardens and travelled extensively in search of new specimens. The first edition of the present work, published in 1597, was much praised for the elegance of the descriptions, but Johnson's re-editing of the work after Gerard's death greatly improved the accuracy and breadth of the original work. It is almost half as long again as the first edition of 1597 and is, in every respect, superior to its predecessor. Johnson was commissioned by the publishers to produce this amended and enlarged edition at short notice in order to forestall Parkinson's Theatrum Botanicum , believed … [Click Below for Full Description]
