Art Source International is proud to offer rare maps produced in 1633 by one of the dominant map-making houses of the 1630's. The atlas that this map is attributed to was first published in 1633 by Henricus Hondius and Joannes Janssonius and contained individual works by each map-maker, some derived from Henricus's brother Jodocus" plates, and a number of maps by Mercator that Hondius acquired from his father -also Jodocus. Although it is somewhat unclear which maps were published cooperatively between Henricus Hondius and Joannes Janssonius and which were individual works, this map illustrating Guyana bears the imprint of Henricus Hondius. The large, exceptionally well maintained map has beautiful hand coloring highlighting rivers, coast lines, and political boundaries. Many place names are identified, especially along the coast. The map is bright and full with ships sailing in he ocean, and sea monsters. 14.75 x 19

ENGLAND. Treaties, 1625-1649 (Charles I).
Lisboa: por Antonio Alvarez, 1633. 4to. [1], 2-20 numbered leaves. Red morocco, gold-tooled binding signed by Emile Rousselle; marbled endpapers; gilt-edged leaves; red, green and yellow silk bookmark. **** The Treaty of Madrid signed 5 November 1630, which ended the war between England and Spain begun in 1625 as a result of a dispute between Charles I and Philip IV over the Palatinate. The war began badly for England with a disastrous naval expedition to Cadiz. Peace negotiations started in 1629 when Charles received the painter, Rubens, as the official envoy of the Spanish Netherlands. The Treaty of Madrid, signed in the following year, was greeted with scant enthusiasm by England’s ally, the Netherlands, and by the English public; and in the Grand Remonstrance of 1641, Charles’s opponents took him to task for ‘the peace with Spain without consent of Parliament’. There are several editions of the treaty in several languages: Madrid 1630, Lima 1632, Madrid 1660 (all in Spanish - see Palau 43262-4); the English version appeared in two editions printed in London in 1630 (NSTC 9251 & 9251.3); a Dutch version was printed at Utrecht in 1631 (BL. Cat.) and a French version appeared at Brussels in 1660 (Palau 43265). This Portuguese translation is exceptionally rare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PASQUIER
Paris: 1633. *** [English translation available upon request. Contact us for any information!]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

John Donne
London: Printed By Elizabeth Purslowe for Henry Seyle, 1633. IUUENILIA: OR CERTAINE PARADOXES AND PROBLEMES. LONDON: PRINTED BY E[LIZABETH]. P[URSLOWE]. FOR HENRY SEYLE, AND ARE TO BE SOLD AT THE SIGNE OF THE TYGERS HEAD, IN SAINT PAULS CHURCHYARD, 1633. 4to (7 1/4 x 5 3/8 in.; 185 x 136 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title-page copied from the Estiennes (McKerrow 311), a profusion of wood- and metal-cut initials and woodcut and typographic head- and tailpieces, with initial blank A1; a bit of marginal darkening. Top spine torn (see photos). Very pleasing copy. First edition, with licenses to print on both F1v and H4v. "Donne's Juvenilia are clever and entertaining trifles, most of which were probably written before 1600 during the more wanton period of the author's life. His own opinion of them was expressed in a letter to Sir Henry Wooton in 1600: ... 'they were made rather to deceave tyme than her daughter truth'" (Keynes). Although these Paradoxes and Problemes were widely circulated in manuscript, their secular, if not vulgar, character prevented them from being published during the author's lifetime. The catalogue of the Grolier Club's quatrocentenary exhibition of Donne mentions that while copies of both the first and second editions of Juvenilia are frequently found bound with the 1633 edition of Donne's Poems, "copies bound separately in contemporary bindings are rare.". Esemplare ben conservato. Xilografia, 1633, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Woodcut, 1633, signed at lower right. The Coronation of the Virgin; the Virgin is crowned by God the Father holding an orb and a sceptre, Christ at right, the Holy Spirit hovering above; on clouds view da sotto in su; after Peter Paul Rubens. A good impression of the second state, published by Rubens himself, with margins, showing trace of central fold, generally in good conditions. After the painting by Rubens (described under Rooses 364); formerly in the Jesuits' Church in Antwerp. A modello by Rubens is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv.no.2123. 1633. The map, displayed on a roll above, shows the coastal contours, with place-names along the Brazilian coast near Recife and Olinda, and below is a bird's-eye view of the siege with ships and the movements of the troops. With the hope of taking control of the sugar trade in Brazil, the fleet of the Dutch West India Company attacked Recife. While the troops landed further north, the fleet, under the command of Admiral Lonq, tried to force an entrance to the harbour but his ships were repulsed by the Portuguese, under the command of Albuquerque. The siege lasted two weeks and in the end the Dutch finally broke through. The Portuguese, however, not wishing their rivals to benefit from their labours, burnt all their sugar warehouses and shipping, the loss of which was estimated at two million ducats.

PONA Francesco.
Giacomo Sarzina, Venise, 1633. [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: 1633.
