germanu: 1633 Small Folio Martin Luther German Bible lots of illustrations Description This is a bit of a quandary as it lacks the general title page and last the page or two of Revelation at the end as it ends at Revelation 19:21 The New Testament does not have a title page however it does bear 2 dates one in Psalms in the preface as 1633 however it does have a title page before Isaiah dated 1622.The print style matches throughout and the collation is consistent with the numbered pages The first part starts at page 1 and ends on page 277 followed by the dated title page of 1622 with 324 pages present possibly out of 326 with the last part of Revelation missing and any tables though not sure it had any. This is also known as an Elector Bible as at the front are woodcuts of some of them and also Martin Luther though edges torn and some part of the pages are missing. The Bible text is very good and solid and very browned with hand written notes,it has been rebound at some point though one of the boards is split down the length of the spine but is still solid. The Bible measures approx. 13 by 8 inches and is about 3 inches thick Otherwise a nice example with lots of illustrations throughout Payment Payment Options:Paypal Shipping Shipping Options:Domestic shipping: Weight based Shipping Charges. Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn)
Rembrandt inventor et feecit [sic]: 1633. Large 4to, 255 x 207 mm. A fine impression with ample margins outside the plate mark, on paper with a foolscap watermark. Archivally framed. § This etching depicts the final scene in the parable of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) in which the Samaritan stopped to help a traveler who had been attacked by robbers. Here he has brought the wounded man on horseback to an inn and pays for the man's care and lodging. The is one of only two etchings in which Rembrandt reproduced his own paintings; the other is Christ Before Pilate. The Good Samaritan repeats with a number of variations the composition of his painting in the Wallace Collection, London. Among Rembrandt's additions here to the largely empty foreground that appeared in the painting is the defecating dog that adds a note of everyday reality to the biblical scene. Provenance: Albertina (Lugt 5d) released as a duplicate: Robert Dumesnil (Lugt 2200); private collection USA from Paul McCarron c. 1970 (p.o.r.).

[FORTIFICATION MANUSCRIPT].
An extensive manuscript manual on fortification in French, discussing the design, construction and defence of a wide variety of regular and irregular fortifications, gates, bridges, etc., and with chapters on attacking fortifications, mines and other subjects. It is extensively illustrated, including many full-page or folding fortification plans, with one folding fortification plan and one folding cross-section of fortifications in colour. The text notes in several places that it is based on the work of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), so it was almost certainly written after he began to publish his work on fortification in 1673, and probably no earlier than the 1680s, when he fully developed his methods and published more detailed works on fortification. Although written in French it seems likely to come from northern Germany.Much of the paper is slightly browned, and the ink has left a shadow on the back of the pages or the facing pages. The corner of one leaf was restored before the manuscript was written. One leaf is detached, and some of the slips extending the margins have come partly loose. There is a long tear along the fold of 1 folding leaf and worm holes in the gutter margin of about 30 leaves, not affecting the text or drawings. Most leaves are in good condition. The binding is shabby and somewhat loose, with the spine damaged, the edges tattered and the whole rubbed. An interesting illustrated manuscript fortifications manual.

germanu: 1633 Small Folio Martin Luther German Bible lots of illustrations Description This is a bit of a quandary as it lacks the general title page and last the page or two of Revelation at the end as it ends at Revelation 19:21 The New Testament does not have a title page however it does bear 2 dates one in Psalms in the preface as 1633 however it does have a title page before Isaiah dated 1622.The print style matches throughout and the collation is consistent with the numbered pages The first part starts at page 1 and ends on page 277 followed by the dated title page of 1622 with 324 pages present possibly out of 326 with the last part of Revelation missing and any tables though not sure it had any. GERARD, John (1545-1612)
London: Adam Islip, Joice Norton & Richard Whitakers, 1633. Folio. (13 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches). [36], 1630, [48] pp., lacks preliminary and terminal blanks. Engraved architectural title by John Payne showing Theophrastus and Dioscorides, Ceres and Pomona. Approximately 2,760 woodcuts in text, numerous woodcut initials. Early calf, bordered in blind, expertly rebacked, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, tooled and lettered in gilt. Housed in a cloth box. Provenance: early (Irish?) botanist or apothecary (manuscript marginalia throughout); Thomas Story (signature on the dedication leaf). The preferred second edition of Gerard's "Herbal," the first edition of Thomas Johnson's expanded version with over 2,760 woodcuts: with interesting marginalia and provenance. Gerard was superintendent of the gardens of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, one of the most influential members of the court of Elizabeth I. In addition to his work for Lord Burghley, Gerard also raised many exotic plants in his own gardens and travelled extensively in search of new specimens. The first edition of the present work, published in 1597, was much praised for the elegance of the descriptions, but Johnson's re-editing of the work after Gerard's death greatly improved the accuracy and breadth of the original work. It is almost half as long again as the first edition of 1597 and is, in every respect, superior to its predecessor. Johnson was commissioned by the publishers to produce this amended and enlarged edition at short notice in order to forestall Parkinson's Theatrum Botanicum , believed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Xilografia, 1633, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Woodcut, 1633, signed at lower right. The Coronation of the Virgin; the Virgin is crowned by God the Father holding an orb and a sceptre, Christ at right, the Holy Spirit hovering above; on clouds view da sotto in su; after Peter Paul Rubens. A good impression of the second state, published by Rubens himself, with margins, showing trace of central fold, generally in good conditions. After the painting by Rubens (described under Rooses 364); formerly in the Jesuits' Church in Antwerp. A modello by Rubens is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv.no.2123. Matthaus MERIAN "il vecchio" (1593 - 1650)
1633. "Carta geografica raffigurante parte del Pernambuco, con le città di Olinda e Recife. La carta è tratta dall'ultima edizione de ""Grandi Viaggi"" di Johannes Theodor de Bry, curata da Mattheus Merian ed edita a Francoforte nel 1633-34. Incisione in rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione." The map, displayed on a roll above, shows the coastal contours, with place-names along the Brazilian coast near Recife and Olinda, and below is a bird's-eye view of the siege with ships and the movements of the troops. With the hope of taking control of the sugar trade in Brazil, the fleet of the Dutch West India Company attacked Recife. While the troops landed further north, the fleet, under the command of Admiral Lonq, tried to force an entrance to the harbour but his ships were repulsed by the Portuguese, under the command of Albuquerque. The siege lasted two weeks and in the end the Dutch finally broke through. The Portuguese, however, not wishing their rivals to benefit from their labours, burnt all their sugar warehouses and shipping, the loss of which was estimated at two million ducats.

CALLOT JACQUES.
Jacques Callot 1592-1635 an important French engraver. He engraved in all about 1600 pieces. No one ever possessed a higher degree of talent for grouping a large number of figures in a small space and of representing with two or three bold strokes the expression action and peculiar features of each individual. Freedom variety and navet characterize all his pieces. --The Encyclopdia Britannica 11th Edition 1910 558. Callot also had developed an advanced method of etching using a slanted needle which allowed diversity of width within each line. His Les Miseres et Les Mal-Heurs de la Guerre is a very early anti-war illustrated work. The prints in the work show soldiers pillaging and burning their way through towns country and convents before being variously arrested and executed by their superiors lynched by peasants or surviving to live as crippled beggars. At the end the generals are rewarded by their monarch.--PBA Galleries description 2016. One reads about this subject in the manuscript notes of Mariette. This works represents particularly the life of the soldier and a representation of all that it makes others suffer and a tableau of all that it makes others suffer. It is one of the works where this talented engraver gave the most proof of his knowledge and that gave him the greatest acclaim.--translation. The book consists of 18 copperplate engravings including the title page. The engravings are 8.5 x 19cm on paper that is 15.4 x 24.2cm oblong. (44 p.) 1319 pp. (32 p.) (1 f.), contemporary vellum First French translation by Jean Baudoin, following the original Spanish, which was published in 1609 in Lisbon. This translation is only of the first part of the Commentaire royal; the second has apparently never been translated. The frontispiece shows a Peruvian city in the upper portion, most likely Cuzco, with a procession celebrating the various forces of nature. In the lower portion are two Incas, named as Manco Capac and Mama Occlo, framing the title; above are two vignettes showing jewels, and a caravel. The plate is normally signed M.L. (the L here has been erased) for Michel Lasne, a French draughtsman and engraver who was best known as a student of Rubens'.
