LATHAM, S.
London, Thomas Harper, for John Harison, 1633. 2 volumes (bound in one). 4to (190 x 138mm). pp. (24), 147, (1, blank); pp. (22), 148, (4), with woodcut illustration on title, and 31 woodcuts (some repeated) in the text. Later calf, sides with gilt border, richly gilt ornamented spine with 2 red gilt lettered labels, gilt edges. First collected edition of the two volumes. "Latham's 'Falconry' ranks among the principal books on hawking in the English language... J.E. Harting, the great authority on hawking literature, states that a relative of Latham was assistant falconer and subsequently sergeant of the hawks to the successors of Sir Thomas Monson, i.e. to Sir Patrick Hume, Master Falconer to the King, and Sir Allen Apsley. This relative was 60 years of age when Latham published his book in 1614-15, so that we may assume that a good deal of knowledge was derived by him from this source. Latham in the second book, refers to Henry Sadler of Everley, Grand Falconer to Queen Elisabeth, as 'his first and loving master'" (Schwerdt I, 302). The first volume was first published in 1615, and the second volume in 1618. The present edition is the first collected edition, using the same woodblocks and according to Harting 'quite as good as the first, of which it is a reprint without alteration'. An attractively bound and well preserved copy of this rare item. Old signature on title.//Harting, Bibliotheca Accipitraria 20; Schwerdt I, 302.

Jacques CALLOT
[Click Below for Full Description]

PRYNNE, WILLIAM
Printed by E. A. and W. I. for Michael Sparke, London 1633 - 198 x 140 mm. (7 3/4 x 5 1/2"). 17 p.l., 512 pp., 513-568 leaves, 545-582, [2] blank, 831-1,006 pp., [20] leaves (obviously erratic numbering, but complete). FIRST EDITION, Second Issue, as virtually always (with "Errataes" on ***4v). Contemporary sprinkled calf, recently resewn and rebacked by Courtland Benson. Pforzheimer III, 809; STC 20464; Brunet IV, 618; Graesse V, 468. First few leaves with faint, inoffensive stain at lower inner margin, otherwise QUITE A FINE COPY, with only trivial imperfections--the expertly restored binding unworn, and the text consistently fresh, almost entirely clean, and with ample margins. The Puritan divine William Prynne (1600-69) loosed his moral lightning upon the theater of his time in the present diatribe, a work that could not have been more unrestrained nor more ill-timed. This was no precision ideological sortie, but an unbridled surfeit of castigation. In the words of the Norton Anthology of English Literature, "in this passionate . . . tirade of over 1,000 pages larded with authorities in the text and margins--classical philosophers, Church Fathers, Protestant theologians--Prynne denounced stage plays, cross-dressed male actors, court masques, mixed dancing in masques and everywhere else, maypoles, wakes and other rural festivals, country sports on the sabbath, Laudian ritual, stained-glass windows and much more, staking out the most extreme Puritan position on traditional recreations at court and in the countryside." Prynne was also outraged by the favor shown to Shakesp … [Click Below for Full Description]

The map, displayed on a roll above, shows the coastal contours, with place-names along the Brazilian coast near Recife and Olinda, and below is a bird's-eye view of the siege with ships and the movements of the troops. With the hope of taking control of the sugar trade in Brazil, the fleet of the Dutch West India Company attacked Recife. While the troops landed further north, the fleet, under the command of Admiral Lonq, tried to force an entrance to the harbour but his ships were repulsed by the Portuguese, under the command of Albuquerque. The siege lasted two weeks and in the end the Dutch finally broke through. The Portuguese, however, not wishing their rivals to benefit from their labours, burnt all their sugar warehouses and shipping, the loss of which was estimated at two million ducats. Jacques Callot
Israel Henriet c. 1633, Paris. Edition : First Edition. , 18th century marbled boards, rebacked. Spine in six compartments of raised bands. Gilt text on 2. Gilt ornamentation and rules on 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. , ?Les Grandes Misères de la guerre? are a series of 18 etchings titled in full "Les Misères et les Malheurs de la Guerre". Despite the grand theme of the series, the images are in fact only about 83 mm x 180 mm each, and are called the "large" Miseries to distinguish them from an even smaller earlier set on the same subject. The series, published in 1633, is Callot's best-known work and has been called the first "anti-war statement" in European art. Les Grand Misères depict the destruction unleashed on civilians during the Thirty Years' War; no specific campaign is depicted, but the set inevitably recalls the actions of the army that Cardinal Richelieu sent in 1633 to occupy Callot's native Lorraine before annexing it to France. The series begins with a florid title page, followed by an enrollment parade and a battle scene. Plates 4?8 show bands of the victorious soldiers successively attacking a farm, convent, and coach, and burning a village. In plates 9?14 they are rounded up and subjected to various methods of public torture and execution. Plate 15 shows crippled soldiers in a grand neo-classical hospital, Plate 16 unemployed soldiers dying in the street, and Plate 17 the peasants taking revenge on a group they have captured, killing them with flails. Plate 18 shows an enthroned king distributing rewards to the victorious generals.Jacques Callot (1592-1635) was a ba … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bacon, Francis
Oxford: Thomas Huggins. Good with no dust jacket. 1633. 3rd. Leather. [2], 335, [1] pages; text block lacking spine strip and one cover lacking. Front free endpaper detached and worn. Title page with shallow chipping to fore-edge away from text. Last page with loss extending into last word of top three lines. Text block is firm and complete. This is the most important of Bacon's philosophical writing, first published in 1605. The first book eloquently discusses the importance of learning, but the second is a crucial work on the philosophy of science. It "describes the gross inadequacies of the curriculum in English universities and the need for detailed study of material objects to discover, ultimately, the explanation of every aspect of nature. The Advancement of Learning then provides a survey of learning, classifying existing branches of knowledge and pointing to new areas for study. .

Bible. N.T. Greek. 1633.
Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1633. Syston Park copy of the editio recepta of Beza's text, following the first Elzevir edition of 1624 and largely agreeing with the octavo edition of 1565. Greek New Testaments were a staple of the renowned Elzevir family of printers, and Willems declares that of the three printed by the Leyden Elzevirs, "celle-ci est la plus belle et la plus recherchée." => It was in the preface to this edition that this text was first labelled "Textus Receptus." After the preface, the text is printed entirely in Greek, except for Latin chapter headings in the table of contents; verse numbers are given in the inner margin of each page. The title-page features the printer's woodcut device of a man picking grapes from a vine on a tree and the motto "Non solus." Binding: 18th-century crimson straight-grain morocco, covers framed in dotted gilt rules, board edges and turn-ins with dotted gilt rule, spine similarly ruled and with gilt-stamped title. All edges gilt and a light blue silk ribbon placemarker still present. Almost certainly done by => Roger Payne, Syston Park's preferred binder. Provenance: Front pastedown with bookplates of H. Walter Webb and Syston Park (i.e., the famous => Syston Park Library, collected at Lincolnshire by Sir John Hayford Thorold, Bart., and his predecessors); front free endpaper with bookplate of Leila Howard Codman; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear. The Sotheby's catalogue of the Syston Park sale suggests that the present copy was Sir John's duplicate, this … [Click Below for Full Description]

In this self portrait Anna Maria van Schurman combined the techniques of engraving and etching. She depicted herself wearing an elegant dress embellished with lace on the bodice and sleeves. She convincingly rendered the illusion of spatial depth by shading the inner rim of the oval frame and placing herself behind a ledge, which pushes her figure farther back into the picture plane. That ledge also obscures her hands. Van Schurman hid her hands in her first engraved self-portrait (1633), as well, for which a correspondent, the poet and statesman Constantijn Huygens, chided her. He admonished van Schurman for being ashamed of her ink-stained hands, which he said "have never found their equal."As the inscription on the oval frame tells us, the artist realized this palte in 1640 when she was 33 years old. The Latin inscription at the bottom is addressed to her friends, to whom she sent this portrait. It reads: 'See my likeness depicted in this portrait:/May your favor perfect the work where art has failed.' [Cernitis hic picta nostros in imagine vultus: / Si negat ars forma, gratia vestra dabit]. Signed on bottom right with her initials: 'A.M. á S. Fec.'. Etching and engraving on laid paper; trimmed closed to plate mark; total: 203 x 156 mm; state IV/4, some dirt and smudges along the margins; some dirt on the verso; two tiny worm holes the size of small pin holes. Little scratch mark on the forehead; beautiful impression; Hollstein 3.
