(Kh) Abravanel, Isaac; Moses Alshekh; Constantijn L'Empereur; R. Simeon
Lugduni Batavorum; Ex Officina Bonaventurae & Abrahmi Elzevir, 1631. Later cloth. 12mo. [16], 291, [13] pages. 17 cm. First edition. Text in Latin and Hebrew. Imprint date in Roman numerals. Title page in red and black. Published in Leiden. Commentaries on Isaiah 30, by Isaac Abravanel (1437-1508) and Moses Alshekh (1507-1600) . Translated by Constantijn L'Empereur (1591–1648) , a promiment Dutch Hebraist. The translation “is coupled with an attempt at refuting the positions and views of Abravanel and Alshekh. The goal is ‘to give a complete understanding of the satisfaction of Christ. ' Both Abravanel and Alshekh deal extensively with the nature of the Messiah and the messianic era. Their commentaries were extremely well-known to both Jewish and Christian audiences. Alshekh, in his Bible commentaries, resorted to many allegorical and spiritual interpretations. Moreover, Alshekh himself had been influenced by Abravanel, the statesman, philosopher, and exegete, who fled Spain for Italy in 1492. Abravanel's lucid style, influenced by Renaissance literary trends, and his elaborate treatment of issues of common concern to both Christians and Jews, together with his citation of Christian views, made him, from a Christian Hebraist perspective, possibly the most significant of Jewish authors, apart from Maimonides. ” (Entry 91, ‘Christian Hebraism: the study of Jewish culture by Christian scholars in medieval and early modern times, proceedings of a colloquium and catalogue of an exhibition'; 1998) . Thomas Morton
London: printed by W. Stansby, for Robert Mylbourne, 1631. First edition, folio, pp. [20], 255, [1], 143, [16]; contemporary full speckled calf, covers ruled in blind, edges of covers with gilt rules, contemporary manuscript paper label on spine, sprinkled edges; minor rubbing; fine. Thomas Morton, at the time Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, and later of Durham, was much admired by both James I and Charles I. He appears to have been a man of considerable charm, and a kind and enthusiastic patron of deserving scholars. Most of his writings were devoted to exposing the fallacies of Romish doctrines, but the content of his books is perhaps not well indicated by the rather strident tone of some of his titles. "They display great learning and an intimate acquaintance with the arguments of his antagonists. It is no small praise that they exhibit none of the bitterness and scurrility which too commonly disfigure the polemics of the age" (DNB). STC 18189; CBEL I, 1996. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ter Muelen and Diermanse say this is the "most important" of the first five editions because it contains the most authorial corrections, which made it the basis for all later editions produced in the author's lifetime. Of all his numerous works De Jure Belli ac Pacis will always be considered Grotius's magnum opus, the work upon which his reputation most solidly rests. SPEED, John
London,: Are to be sold in popes-head alley by G. Humble, 1631. London,: Are to be sold in popes-head alley by G. Humble,, 1631. [1631]. Engraved map with hand colouring. A map of Denmark, parts of Poland and Norway. The upper border contains views of Copenhagen, Helsingør, Ribe, Schleswig and Hamburg. There are two portrait medallions of Christian IV of Denmark and Norway and his son the Prince-Elect Christian, although Speed appears to have amalgamated the Prince-Elect with his younger brother Frederik. The German city of Hamburg is included because of its proximity (and thus its position in trade) to Denmark. The side borders contain local figures wearing native dress. John Speed (1552-1629) was the outstanding cartographer of his age. His 'Theatre of Great Britain', first published in 1611 or 1612, was the first atlas of Great Britain: Speed prepared the maps himself about two years before they were published. This map is from the 'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World', produced in collaboration with Speed to accompany the 'Theatre' and published in a joint edition by George Humble in 1631. Many of the maps were anglicized versions of works by Dutch makers, who introduced the carte-à-figure style, with borders of figures in local costume and city views. Chubb XXV.

They settled permanently in Spain where Juan Eusebio always lived. They knew Juan Caramuel, with whom Juan Eusebio would close a great friendship. He began studying at the University of Alcalá de Henares, but in 1614 he entered as a novice at Villagarcía de Arosa, despite the opposition of his father, who managed to get him out of there. However, he persisted in his idea and got his father to let him continue. He studied Greek and Hebrew at the College of Huete, and arts and theology at the University of Alcalá with his friend Juan Caramuel between 1618 and 1623. In 1623 he was ordained priest and professed as a Jesuit in 1633. He spent some time in Toledo, but was called to Madrid to teach humanities and natural sciences at the Imperial College of Madrid of the Society of Jesus for six years. Later he was in charge of teaching biblical exegesis and theology for a three-year period. BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam, 1631, Latin text edition. Coloured. 380 x 495mm. Paper lightly toned overall. Brazil, orientated with north to the right. The title cartouche is of two indians, an inset map shows the area around Salvador, and vignettes copied from de Bry show a hammock, goats, a battle and cannibals cooking lunch. The plate was engraved by Jodocus Hondius Jnr, son of the Jodocus who purchased the Mercator plates. When he died in 1629 many of his plates were sold to Blaeu, much to the chagrin of the Hondius firm run by Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson, who were forced to rush the engraving of new plates. This is a very early example of Blaeu's printing, published in the third edition of his 'Appendix Theatri A. Ortelii', a year after his first atlas and four years before the first issue of his 'Novus Atlas'. KOEMAN: Bl 3.

Binding discolored and rubbed, front hinge cracking. Lacks front flyleaf; old stamp on title-page, illustration on page 50 cropped. Fludd was one of the best known British philosophers of his day, physician and occultist. "All disease, starting from a certain point, proceeds either in one direction or in another. The 'Catholic' disease springs from the sin of man, and is a plague which is sent to evil hearts by Jehovah through evil angels.the essence of disease is corruption by sin.Disease is either acute or chronic, and is undoubtedly affected by the influence of the planets.A large portion of the work treats of the stellary influence on health and disease. The effects of the moon are laid down in certain definite canons. The divine science of numbers is also explained in regard to its relation to disease, and the thirty days of the month have each their influence on the progress of disease. A very large portion of the Catoptron is taken up with a treatise 'De Nomandia, sive Oypomantia'--that is, 'divination' 'per urinam.' The four 'conflexions' are explained in their relation to sickness." 'The tract [Pulsus] is divided into five parts: 1. The radical mystery of the pulse is opened up. 2. SJ [SPEED, John.]
London: Robert Barker: 1631. Contemporary full leather binding, with gilt decoration to the front, spine and rear. Text in double columns. Illustrated by engraved title pages, head and tail piece vignettes and decorated initials. The Bible appears complete, but there is no numbering of pages, so collation is reliant on the register. The beginning portion particularly (Genealogies and introductory matter) appears to begin each section with a new register. (so I cannot be certain that the genealogies is complete. There is NO title page for the Old Testament - beginning with the first page of the book of Genesis. However, the register shows that this page followed properly, and indicates no loss. The full collation is as follows: The Genealogies - title page, verso is dedication to the Christian reader. A Description of Canaan (Two leaves, with text and double page map). Total 3 leaves. (no printer's marks) followed by 8 Trees of Genealogy (B-B4). An Act of Uniformity of Common Prayer. (A2-A7). Dedication to King James (A2)The Old Testament then Begins A3-Yy3 (including the Book of Apocrypha. Engraved title for the New Testament (dated 1631). Pagination continues Yy4-Kkk8. Finis with Barker's imprint and date 1631. The Book of Psalmes is followed by The Whole book of Psalmes collected into English Meater. Which has it's own engraved title page. The collation is A-G3. The binding is sound, but has rubbing to the edges and particularly the spine edges. Gilt has faded somewhat. Still attractive though. The pages are darkened, and there is slight chipping to many of the pages, inc … [Click Below for Full Description]

This work is a valuable description of India, especially the northern parts of India.
