John Speed
ont> John Dawson for George Humble: London. Ont> John Dawson for George Humble: London, 1631 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The very scarce 1631 edition of this monumental history of Britain by the influential historian and cartographer, John Speed. John Speed is renowned for his work as both a leading English cartographer and historian, and is considered one of the best known English mapmakers of the early modern period. Following encouragement from English antiquarian and historian William Camden, Speed began this work, published first in 1611 as the 'Historie of Great Britaine'. Many of the historical sources utilised for the work remain unknown, although they do include the work of cartographers Christopher Saxton and John Norden. The work is considered a continuation of The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, first published between 1611 and 1612, within which is contained the first set of individual county maps of England and Wales. Scarce not seen at auction since 1984 Speed considered this History of Great Britaine to be his major work, the majority of which was funded by Sir Fulke Grevillean, the Elizabethan poet, dramatist, and statesman. The work offers a highly detailed summary of Early English history, and whilst the work has been criticised for a number of inaccuracies, the subsequent frequent citations of the work in later historical pieces reflect its historical significance. Among others, the work offers detailed information regarding the early successors and founders of English institutions including The Saxons, Henry VIII and Edward IV. With an engraved … [Click Below for Full Description]

Melchiorre GHERARDINI (Milano 1607 - 1668)
Coppia di incisioni originali, eseguite all'acquaforte, 1631. Ex collezione William Roscoe (Lugt 2645) Etchings, 1631, without the artist's signature. From the "Capriccio of various figures", a very rare set made in the style of Jacques Callot. Superb impressions of the only state, showing very good contrasts, on contemporary laid paper, trimmed just on the platemark, in perfect conditions. The first plate (B. 49) represents a square with the Duomo (cathedral) the construction phase in the background. The scenography of the second plate (B. 4 … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: 1631. RARE EDITION The Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible With the Original Copperplate Title in Octavo One of Three Known Examples London, 1631/1630 "This is a very rare Bible." - Francis Fry One of three known copies of this edition. Writing in the nineteenth century, the esteemed collector Francis Fry wrote, "The only known copy with the copper plate title is in Lord Ashburnham's Library." Over a century after his death, we are delighted to have located a second example with the extraordinary original copperplate title... the iconic image most associated with the first folio edition of the King James Version in a rare octavo format. Herbert 439; D&M 336 Joe II. Xiii "Rent for Rend" Acts VI. iii "Who wee may" The General Title to this edition is the extremely unique original copper plate adaptation of C. Boel's featured design in 1611. This copy contains all titles, preliminaries and genealogies. The word "Appointed" occurs only on the general title. The NT title is within a woodcut architectural border like that used in many deuodecimo editions but with the figures of Fides and Religion on either side of the altar. This historic edition provides an institutional or individual collector with the opportunity to secure an extremely important early printing of the King James Bible at a fraction of the cost of a first edition folio...and offers the opportunity to acquire one of the rarest known printings of the English Bible. Additional information available upon request.

Lugd. Bat: officinâ Elzeviriana, 1631. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 'De Principatibus Italiae' is a rare, early 17th-century work featuring a collection of important essays and treatises by notable authors Joannes de Laet and Thomas Segetho. Published by the famed Elzevier, this book features two main works: · 'Incerti Auctoris de Principibus Italiae Commentarius' · 'Tractatus de Territoriis, Potentia, Familiis, Foederibus, Principum, Rerumpublicarum...' Both of these works are studies and observations on the Italian government and politics. (Shahan). It should be noted, that while Segetho was not the most famous of English scholars, he was a skilled poet and pupil of Galileo. He is probably best remembered for comparing Christopher Columbus and Galileo saying how much greater Galileo was because he 'gave us new worlds without any damage to anybody!'.

STOW, John
London: Richardi Meighen, 1631. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Beginning 1565, English historian John Stow published his landmark work "Summarie of Englyshe Chronicles". In this book, Stow describes the origins of Great Britain, both Scotland and England, and its people - a work that would evolve and included numerous additions through the 17th-century. Stow also provides details on English castles and dungeons, parishes and cathedrals, the feuds between Anglican and Catholic religious bodies, kings, wars, and much, much more. Following Stow's death in the early 1600s, Edmund Howes continued Stow's original work with more editions. This 1631 edition was the final edition that Howes would publish; an edition that still utilized the expected gothic script that was customary of "Stow's Chronicle".

NIELS, Theodoor; SAVERIJ, Salomon [engraved figures after] VENNE, Adriaan van de; BERCKENRODE, Balthasar Florensz van [engraved map]
[Amsterdam],: H.J. Van Wouw, 1631. [Amsterdam],: H.J. Van Wouw,, 1631. 1631. Engraved wall map on six sheets joined, eighteen inset views of the battle and siege works to left and right of the map. Large separately published six sheet map of the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch during the Eighty Years War. Hostilities between the Habsburg Empire and the Dutch Republic resumed in 1621, following the ending of the Twelve Years' Truce. The Habsburgs tried to punish the rebellious Dutch Republic by cutting it off from its hinterland by a land blockade. The blockade caused an economic crisis for the Republic and it reacted by trying to harm Spain in its colonies. In 1628, one of the many schemes undertaken met with spectacular success when Admiral Piet Hein of the Dutch West India Company captured the Spanish treasure fleet. With this windfall from the Stadtholder Frederick Henry decided to break the Habsburg blockade by launching a campaign against 's-Hertogenbosch. 's-Hertogenbosch, also known as moerasdraak (swamp dragon), was the main fortress in the Spanish blockading line, and enormous sums of money had been poured into the improvement of its defences. As the ground surrounding the city was a marsh, the city was generally deemed to be impregnable, as the water-saturated soil seemed to make an application of current siege methods such as trench-digging and undermining impossible. STOW, John
Richardi Meighen. 1631 Stow Chronicle of England Scotland Saxon WAR King Stephen Henry VIII Tudor Beginning 1565, English historian John Stow published his landmark work “Summarie of Englyshe Chronicles”. Stow also provides details on English castles and dungeons, parishes and cathedrals, the feuds between Anglican and Catholic religious bodies, kings, wars, and much, much more. Following Stow’s death in the early 1600s, Edmund Howes continued Stow’s original work with more editions. This 1631 edition was the final edition that Howes would publish; an edition that still utilized the expected gothic script that was customary of “Stow’s Chronicle”.
