ZINKGREF, Julius Wilhelm. 1591-1635
Strassburg: J. Rihel and W.C. Glaser, 1631. Contemporary vellum over stiff boards (soiled), overlapping edges, later manuscript spine title. First Complete Edition. Oral tradition lies just below the surface of this collection of aphorisms, anecdotes and word play. It presents the wit of emperors, popes and princes as well as of mathematicians, printers and astronomers from the 9th to the 17th century. In the "anonymous" section, pithy wisdom, a good time and the common man carry the day. Zinkgref conjured a high literary language to bind the nation politically and culturally. The first volume originally appeared in 1626 (this page-for-page reprint has a new 2000-entry subject index). The second volume is the first printing. In good condition (scattered foxing and light stains), signature on the title dated 1751, early manuscript annotations, bookplate of de Guinzbourg. ¶Dünnhaupt, Personalbibliographien...des Barock VI: 4357,1.2; Moll, Sprichwörter-Bibliographie 3740; VD17 3:000970B.

BOURGOGNE, Antoine à. 1593-1657
Antwerp: J. Cnobbaert, 1631. Elegant early 19th-century gilt straight-grained brown morocco (Simier), outer rule and delicate flower roll frame, gilt-lettered spine with bows in the compartments, board edge corners gilt in a fine azured pattern, three sets of endleaves - marbled, plain paper and vellum, all edges gilt, red silk marker. First Edition of this EXQUISITE MINIATURE EMBLEM BOOK in two parts. The first illustrates and condemns the vices inherent in speech - loquacity, deception, insult, vulgarity, disparagement, blasphemy, lying, perjury and false witness. The second illustrates and advances alternatives with imaginative images of telescopes, theatrical performances, exotic and domestic animals, daily life, maritime disaster, military conflict, urban and rural labors, the supernatural, singers and instrumentalists, amorous encounters, domestic tranquility and commerce. The facing quatrains sharpen the argument. As nearly all copies, that offered here lacks the blank leaf A8, bearing only pagination and the headline "Lingva". A fine copy (finger smudges on three leaves not touching the plates). ¶Praz, Studies in 17th-Century Imagery 292 "Scarce"; Landwehr, Emblem...Books Printed in the Low Countries 95 (91 emblems in error); Funck, Le Livre belge à gravures 284 ("1630" in error); The Lessing J. PONA Francesco
Biograf. Italiani, Vol. LXXXIV. Cfr. Michel,VI, p. 138 - Cat. Piantanida,II, 2103 per la seconda ediz. del 1727 … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLAGUE -
In Napoli, Appresso Ottavio Beltrano, MDCXXXI [1631]. First Naples Edition. Small 4to, pp. [viii], 63, [1] colophon; foxed and browned throughout, with some marginal worming, not affecting text; in later vellum; warped and lightly soiled. An uncommon and detailed treatise on the plague and its remedies, published at the height of the great Northern Italian epidemic of 1629-1631, which claimed the lives of some 280,000 people, chiefly in Lombardy and the Veneto. The work describes the spread and symptoms of the bubonic plague, its diagnosis, and its prognosis, before proposing a series of remedies. These range from the essentially pharmaceutical to those verging on witchcraft, and include both preventative measures and treatments for those already ill. The sources of the remedies are also given; ones used in the Constantinople outbreak of 1576, as well as suggestions by a number of named physicians, including Giulio Tresso, Prospero Danza, and the Venetian Nicolo Colocchi. The work also includes instructions on ridding affected houses and buildings of infection. We have been unable to locate any copies of the Venetian printing cited on the title. Krivatsky 9541; further copies recorded at the BL, Wellcome, Aberdeen, BNF and Bibliotheque Sainte Genevieve. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Printed by Thomas Harper... And are to be sold by Laurence Sadler at the signe of the Golden Lion in little Britaine., 1631. London: London: Printed by Thomas Harper... And are to be sold by Laurence Sadler at the signe of the Golden Lion in little Britaine., 1631. 1st Edition . Full leather. Very Good. Cecil, T.. First edition; folio; [20], 871, [17]pp. In early full leather, respined in twentieth century over five raised spine bands between double gilt fillets with gilt lettered red leather spine label to second compartment, gilt date to foot of spine and double gilt fillets to head and foot of spine (binding lightly worn with minor loss of leather to board corners, spine uniformly faded). Engraved heraldic ownership label to front pastedown (Whalley Hamerton), three neat early ink ownership names to first three leaves, very occasional unobtrusive spots, stains and feint paper browning, lacks portrait frontispiece but with extra engraved title-page engraved by T. Cecil, 18 woodcut illustrations and scarce original closing index all present. Already in his fifties Weever embarked upon his project to comprehensively describe the significant tombs and memorials of the United Kingdom, covering much of South East England before he passed away. The consequent destruction of many of these tombs during the civil wars have made his work especially valuable to subsequent generations. A clean and attractive copy. ESTC S118104.

King James I
London: 1631. CONDITION: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. Contact us for additional images or information. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! SJ [SPEED, John.]
London: Robert Barker, 1631. The binding is sound, but has rubbing to the edges and particularly the spine edges. Gilt has faded somewhat. Still attractive though. The pages are darkened, and there is slight chipping to many of the pages, including the map and genealogies. Some pages have closed tears, and a few pages have significant loss of paper - including text. Particularly the early part of the book of Psalms, where 4 leaves have loss. The blank page preceding the Psalmes of David has numerous births (18th century) written and crossed out.. Contemporary full leather binding, with gilt decoration to the front, spine and rear. Text in double columns. Illustrated by engraved title pages, head and tail piece vignettes and decorated initials. The Bible appears complete, but there is no numbering of pages, so collation is reliant on the register. The beginning portion particularly (Genealogies and introductory matter) appears to begin each section with a new register. (so I cannot be certain that the genealogies is complete. There is NO title page for the Old Testament - beginning with the first page of the book of Genesis. However, the register shows that this page followed properly, and indicates no loss. The full collation is as follows: The Genealogies - title page, verso is dedication to the Christian reader. A Description of Canaan (Two leaves, with text and double page map). Total 3 leaves. (no printer's marks) followed by 8 Trees of Genealogy (B-B4). An Act of Uniformity of Common Prayer. (A2-A7). Dedication to King James (A2) The Old Testament then Begins A3-Y … [Click Below for Full Description]
