Amsterdam: apud G. Blaeuw, 1631. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio (298 x 195 mm). Text very little browned, very minor occasional spotting, faint dampstaining to upper margin. Provenance: Chevallier Rufigny (bookplate to front pastedown). ----Ter Meulen-D. 567; vgl. PMM 125 (for 1st. ed.). THE SECOND AUTHORISED EDITION (first folio and first Amsterdam edition) of the 'foundation of modern international law' (PMM). A prodigy in his youth, Grotius became a statesman and thinker of the greatest integrity whose influence on modern European thought can scarcely be overestimated. In 1619, cutting short a successful career in the law and diplomacy, Grotius was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Louvestein fortress in Holland by order of the stadtholder, Prince Maurice of Nassau, for having attempted to orchestrate a compromise between the Calvinist and anti-Spanish party, led by Maurice, and the more moderate Remonstrant party, who advocated self-government of the Dutch states in matters of religion. After a dramatic escape two years later (his wife smuggled him out of jail in a book trunk) Grotius took refuge in France, where he survived on meagre pensions, setding in 1623 in the country house of the President de Meme near Senlis, close to the property of deThou fib, who gave him free access to his father's splendid library. There Grotius began writing his master work, De jure belli ac pacis. Many of the ideas developed therein had been outlined in an unpublished work of his youth, the De jure praedae, the manuscript of which he had brought with him, enabling him to finish the treatise in under a year. The fundamental importance of the mature work is its attempt, a century before the spread of the Enlightenment, 'to obtain a principle of right, and a basis for society and government, outside the church or the Bible' (M. Pattison, art."Grotius", Ency. Brit. 1911,12, p.623). "L'édition qui est la première parue en Hollande et la première en grand format, est la troisième de toute la serie . . . est la plus importante des cinq éditions qui on été préparées, plus ou moins, par l'auteur lui-même." (Ter Meulen, Grotius No. 567). Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.

1631 Owen Feltham Resolves English Essays Gender Equality Literature Politics

London : Imprinted [by Thomas Purfoot] for Henry Seile and are to be sould at the Tygers head in St Paules Church yard, 1631. 4th edition. STC 10759. Lowndes II:786. - 1631 Owen Feltham Resolves English Essays Gender Equality Literature Politics “Whence proceed the most abhorred villainies, but from a masculine unblushing impudence? When a woman grows bold and daring, we dislike her, and say, ‘she is too like a man’: yet in our selves, we magnify what we condemn. Is not this injustice?” – Feltham, Resolves. First published in 1623, this collection of over 100 short essays by Owen Feltham was published while Feltham was a teenager. It saw significant popularity and played a crucial role in the development of the English essay as a genre. These essays and commentaries focused on three aspects of life – divine, ethical, and political – in middle-class England. However, this work has since had significant controversy surround it, specifically social and gender-equality. Feltham, a progressive for his time, exhibits social and sexual ideology and promotes woman as woman, rather than an extension of man. This did not sit well with many readers, especially those in higher-class England. Item number: #242 Price: $750 FELTHAM, Owen.         Disputationes Tredecim de Iusta & Gratiosa Dei Dispensatione Circa Salutem Generis Humani, Habitae Publice in Celeberrima, Batavorum Academia (bound with Collegium Controversiarum Inter Orthodoxos & Pontificios, Brevibues Positionibus Comprehensum)

Bonaventurae & Abrahami/Elzevir, Lugduni [Leiden/Leyden] 1631 - 1631. First edition. Two books bound in one. xvi, 298pp. and 67pp. André Rivet (Andreas Rivetus / Andreae Riveti) (1572-1651) was a French Huguenot theologian. He was born at Saint-Maixent, France. After completing his education at Berne, he studied theology privately at Berne and La Rochelle, and from 1595 to 1620 was at Thouars, first as chaplain of the duke of La Trémouille and later as pastor. In 1617 he was elected president of the Synod at Vitré; and in 1620 he was called to Leiden as professor of theology. A learned Reformed theologian and a relentless apologist of the Reformed faith against the attacks of the Roman Catholic Church, Rivet was in his day the most influential member of the theological faculty of Leyden; and together with his colleagues he drew up, in 1625, the Synopsis purioris theologiae, a series of 52 academic disputations covering the main topics of Reformed theology. At Leyden Rivet also worked in the field Old Testament exegesis. His numerous writings are divided among polemics, exegesis, dogmatics, and edification. The book for sale contains his 'Disputationes Tredecim', thirteen Discussions about what is just and acceptable to the dispensation of God regarding the salvation of the human race. It is bound with a smaller work, his 'Collegium Controversiarum' - disputes between the Orthodox and Papists, as proposed in private between students. The book is bound in contemporary vellum covered card with no visible titling (any writing on the spine may have faded or been worn away with time. The vellum shows expected signs of its age with staining and soiling and bumping to the corners. It is complete apart from a a small piece (about 1/2" x 1/4") missing from the bottom rear edge and a little damage to the top front spine corner. The contents are tight although the fixed endpaps have become separated from the card boards, as is common with this type of binding and age. The vellum was tight bound onto the spine but is now partly loose. The contents are clean apart from soiling on the endpapers and title page of the first book. There are a few marks from finger smudges etc. on the early pages of the book. There is some light and faint water staining on the top edge of pages 99 to 169. Pages 116 to 136 have some insect damage which is small at the start and end with slightly more on pages 125 to 135 where it slightly affects the top lines of text. Size: 6.1" Tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Historia Antipodum oder Newe Welt, Das ist: Natur vnd Eigenschaft desz halbentheils der Erden...

Frankfurt: Matthias Merian, 1631. Three parts in one volume, folio, engraved allegorical title, seven double-page or folding maps and plates, and 174 half-page text engravings; one or two scattered worm holes but a fine copy in contemporary vellum, ties lost, corners slightly bumped; front flyleaf loose; bookplate. First of several editions of this handsome book on the colonisation and conquest of the New World, a heavily-illustrated collection of voyage material relating to the antipodes. While some of the material deals with South America and the oceans of the southern hemisphere, there is much on North America and the West Indies: the word antipodes is used here in its loose sense of opposite ends of the globe, whether opposite by latitude or longitude, thus giving a context for seventeenth-century notions of the antipodes. This is 'important and magnificent, greatly sought after, expensive and rare', says Borba de Moraes, while Müller noted that it 'is sufficiently well known that good copies are very rare... '. For many years it was attributed to Johann Philipp Abelin, the sixteenth-century German chronicler, whose Theatrum Europaeum was a series of chronicles of the chief events in the history of the world down to 1619. Internet resources all repeat this attribution (an object lesson to us all) although, according to Borba de Moraes, J.L. Gallati proved (Der Koniglich schwedische in Deutschland geführte Krieg, 1902) that Gottfried was in fact the real author and not one of Abelin's pseudonyms. The material derives from the Grands Voyages, the great De Bry collection of voyages. Merian, the publisher of Gottfried's book, was De Bry's son-in-law, and therefore had access to the wonderful copper-engraved plates made to illustrate the De Bry collections. He also supplied a number of new maps and plates for this version, including a German edition of the Smith map of Virginia, and a depiction of the Dutch capture of the Spanish treasure fleet in the Bay of Matanzas in 1628.The first part of the book is an abridgment of the "histories" of previous authors, such as Acosta, Oviedo and Herrera as well as Peter Martyr, Laet, Staden and Jean de Léry. The second part is an account of about thirty voyages to the Americas from Columbus and Vespucci to Spilbergen and Schouten, a number of them of interest to the history of the Pacific; the third part deals with the voyage of Jacob l'Hermite, the voyage of the eleven vessels of the Nassau Fleet which sailed to establish a safe southern route for the Dutch to their possessions in the East Indies.

Bel exemplaire. Provenance : Earls of Macclesfield (ex-libris héraldique gravé et timbre sec sur le titre).***** First edition. A very rare treaty of astronomy, quoting Copernic and Tycho Brahé, written by a royal engineer and cartographer from Normandy. Complete copy with the beautiful folding plate "Sphère plate universelle" and 4 others plates and a tab. In-4. [177 x 128 mm] Collation : (8), 175, (1), 78, (6) pp., 5 planches h.-t. et 1 tabl. Demi-veau à coins, dos à nerfs orné, pièce de titre rouge, tranches rouges. (Reliure du XVIIIe.).

Amsterdam: Janssonius, 1631. 32mo (9,3 x 4,6 cm). 263 pp. Conemporary vellum, joints with 4 thongs, spine with handwritten title. A very small, miniature Dutch Thomas More-edition with an interesting printing history, exemplary for the "Republic of Letters" of the 17th century in the Netherlands. This aspect also well illustrated by the letters from the preliminaries. This 1631-edition is an exact copy of the second of these Blaeu-editions from 1629. But it is interesting that Blaeu had this edition in 1629 also published under his own name, using the same engraved title page, and furthermore his own printer's device. That edition is not quoted by Gibson. The preliminaries contain several letters, written by humanists - Erasmus to Johann Froben, Guillaume Budé to Thomas Lupset, Buslidius to Thomas More, Pierre Gilles to Busleyden and Johannes paludanus to Pierre Gilles. With a 5-line decorated woodcut initial. Small typeset: 28 lines to the page. Engraved title page with a name in ink and an oval name-stamp. Endpaper with an old handwritten ex-libris "Franz Jos. Á Handl. 1739". Three pages of handwritten text on last endpapers and flyleaf - text somewhat faded. Covers bit stained, a few unobtrusive stains in first two quires (including title page), but otherwise a very nice, rather rare, well-kept and very small edition.

Set of the world and continents]

George Humble, [1631]., London, - Speed?Äôs view of the world Engraved maps with hand colouring. A set of five maps comprising a world map and maps of the four known continents. The world map is on a double hemispheric projection in a simple strapwork border, with two smaller celestial maps between. The centre is decorated with personifications of the four elements, and the corners with astronomical information and diagrams. Four cartouches hold portraits of famous explorers, with an English bias: Sir Francis Drake, Ferdinand Magellan, Thomas Cavendish, and Olivier van Noort. Each of the continent maps is surrounded by a border containing views of the principal cities and local people in native costume.John Speed (1552-1629) was the outstanding cartographer of his age. His ?ÄòTheatre of Great Britain?Äô, first published in 1611 or 1612, was the first atlas of Great Britain: Speed prepared the maps himself about two years before they were published. These maps are from the ?ÄòProspect of the Most Famous Parts of the World?Äô, produced in collaboration with Speed to accompany the ?ÄòTheatre?Äô and published in a joint edition by George Humble in 1631. Many of the maps were anglicized versions of works by Dutch makers, who introduced the carte-??-figure style, with borders of figures in local costume and city views. 400 by 520mm. (15.75 by 20.5 inches). Chubb XXV.
