HEIDEN, Jacobus ab
Germany, [c.1630]. Germany,, [c.1630].. Engraved sundial, parts of upper margin restored, with minor loss to text. A rare horizontal paper sundial. The sundial was the work of Jacob van der Heyden (c. 1580-1636), an engraver and publisher of maps and scientific works in Strasbourg during the first half of the seventeenth century. he is known to have cooperated with such eminent figures as Jacob Bartsch, Isaac II Habrect, Abraham Hogenberg and Eberhard Welper. he engraved an armillary sphere drawn by Welper, and it is entirely plausible that the present sundial was engraved after him. Welper published a treatise on sundials in 1625, the same year in which Heyden printed a small pamphlet, ‘Die gestirnte himmels kugel', on celestial spheres, which contained a plate of globe gores. The latitude and longitude coordinates marked upon the dial (30 degrees e, and 47-49 degrees n) correspond to the surrounds of Strasbourg. The dial is finely engraved with the sun flanked by personifications of autumn and spring. A gnomon would be fixed to a position marked “a”, just below the sun. Hour lines radiate out from this point, with signs of the zodiac and vignettes of the months to the right and left borders; below is a compass flanked by personifications of summer and winter. Surrounding the work is a brief description upon the sundial, in Latin and German. The text to the lower right and left corners states that the dial is to be mounted onto a small wooden block with the four wings of explanatory text pasted to the four sides of the block. We are unable to trace any institutional ex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: 1630. Fine condition for its age. Title: Gregorii Naziareni Opera Orationes I Second Edition Paris, 1630 Book: Folio (14" x 9") What is offered is a stunning volume, measuring just over 14" x 9" and weighing close to 10 pounds. Gregory was one of the three hierarchs, along with John Chrysostom and Basil the Great of the Eastern Orthodox Church. It has five raised bands and gilded embossed titles. There is intricate tooling on both the front and back boards. Gregory of Nazianzus Gregory of Nazianzus (Greek: Γρηγόριος ὁ Ναζιανζηνός Grēgorios ho Nazianzēnos; c. 329 - 390), also as Gregory the Theologian or Gregory Nazianzen, was a 4th-century Archbishop of Constantinople, and theologian. He is widely considered the most accomplished rhetorical stylist of the patristic age. As a classically trained orator and philosopher he infused Hellenism into the early church, establishing the paradigm of Byzantine theologians and church officials. Gregory made a significant impact on the shape of Trinitarian theology among both Greek- and Latin-speaking theologians, and he is remembered as the "Trinitarian Theologian". Much of his theological work continues to influence modern theologians, especially in regard to the relationship among the three Persons of the Trinity. Along with the brothers Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa, he is known as one of the Cappadocian Fathers. Gregory is a saint in both Eastern and Western Christianity. In the Roman Catholic Church he is numbered among the Doctors of the Church; in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches he is r … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Taylor (1578 - 1653) was an English poet who dubbed himself "The Water Poet". He was born in Gloucester. After his waterman apprenticeship he served (1596) in Essex's fleet, and was present at Flores in 1597 and at the siege of Cadiz. He spent much of his life as a Thames waterman, a member of the guild of boatmen that ferried passengers across the River Thames in London, in the days when the London Bridge was the only passage between the banks. He became a member of the ruling oligarchy of the guild, serving as its clerk; it is mainly through his writings that history is familiar with the watermen's disputes of 1641-42, in which an attempt was made to democratize the leadership of the Company. He details the uprisings in the pamphlets Iohn Taylors Manifestation ... and To the Right Honorable Assembly ... (Commons Petition), and in John Taylors Last Voyage and Adventure of 1641. Engraving, circa 1630, without printing details. Proof before letters, printed on two sheets of contemporary laid paper, joined at the center. In excellent condition. A map of the walled city of Jerusalem showing the Temple, amphitheatre, palace of Solomon, the palace of Herod. Outside walls, in Golgotha with crosses. FORGET (Pierre).
This handsome map of Iceland was based on information from a Dutch navigator named Joris Carolus in about 1620. The map shows the influence of both versions of bishop Gudbrandur's previous maps, a coastline resembling the Ortelius version, and Mercator's selection and spelling of many place names and has been itself hugely influential for over 130 years. Latin text edition. The island's topography is dominated by huge mountains and volcanoes and its shoreline a rugged labyrinth of fiords. It is richly embellished with title and distance scale cartouches, compass roses, rhumb lines, a sailing ship and two sea monsters.

South-East Asia - Gerard Mercator, 1630
1630. DECORATIVE MAP OF THE EAST INDIES "Insulae Indiae Orientalis Praecipuae, In quibus Moluccae celeberrime sunt." Copper engraving made by Gerard Mercator published in Amsterdam in 1630 by Jodocus Hondius. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 34,5 x 47,6 cm. Verso: Latin text. Striking and highly decorative map of the East Indies from the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Extends from the Philippines to Timor and Sumatra to New Guinea, detailing the Spice Islands, a region of great importance to seventeenth century Europe, but one about which little was known at the time. Hondius based his map on 16th century portolan charts by Portuguese cartographer Bartolomeu Lasso. Of particular note is the comment Huc Franciscus Dra. Appulit, which appears by the unknown southern coast of Java, representing Drake's landing during his circumnavigation of the globe in 1577-80. This map follows very shortly the extension of Dutch control over the islands. In 1602 the Dutch East India Company was formed, and within a couple decades the company came to control the region. Includes three strapwork cartouches, and European ships shown in the midst of battle. Other decorative features include two compass roses, rhumb lines and sea monster. Hondius was a religious refugee in London from 1583, so it is likely that he became familiar with Drake's accounts during this time. On his return to Amsterdam he published an enlarged edition of Mercator's atlas in 1606, in which this map first appeared. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was the founder of the famous 17th century Dutch map publishing family. Hondius, along … [Click Below for Full Description]

1630. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The first account describing tobacco in America! Johann Neander was an early 17th-century German physician who sought to prove that tobacco was a useful source of healing and health. He published the very first German treatise on tobacco and its uses in 1622. This work of pseudo-medicine and pharmaceuticals claimed that tobacco helps against common colds, infections, headaches, intestinal worms, drowsiness, toothaches, scurvy, kidney diseases, and arthritis. Tobacco was highly desirable and coveted throughout Europe for multiple purposes, and Neander was one of the first to clarify and gather all of its purposes into one important work. In 'Tabacologia,' Neander discusses the remarkable medicinal properties of tobacco, its power to cure diseases, and its use in surgery for wounds, ulcers, and abscesses. (Macinnes). In addition to the medical properties of tobacco, Neander describes various types of pipes - Indian, Oriental, and European varieties - cultivation of tobacco, and first account of tobacco growing in the Americas. MONTALBANI, Giovanni Battista
1630. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare work on the history of "The Current State of the Turkish Empire" by Gio Battista Montalbani. According to Dr. Nil Palabiyik on with Elsevier.com, "In Turcici Imperii Status" (The Current Condition of the Turkish Empire), author Giovanni Battista Montalbano dwells on, among more serious topics such as the state formation and military structure of the Empire, the world famous Turkish hospitality and abundance of food in Constantinople. He reminds the "pleasure-seeking traveller" of the availability of "baths, taverns, inns and other places of delight." As he moves on to giving a lavish catalogue of local drinks, he comments that the widely-held view that Turks abstain from drinking wine is a misconception. Even so, Turks preferred to drink "fiery wine," a predecessor of today's popular aniseed-infused spirit raki and an "ink-black, pungent and bitter" hot drink "prepared on a small pot over charcoal," which the locals called café, marking our author's first encounter with Turkish coffee. Other popular drinks mentioned by Montalbano include an alcoholic variety of boza, a milk-colored fermented drink made of ground cereals and ayran, a savory, yoghurt-based soft drink, both of which are fervently consumed in modern-day Turkey almost 400 years after the book's publication. This beautiful work includes an illustrated title page depicting a mounted Turkish sultan. According to Willems, this second edition is "a more complete edition of this work.". His translation of the New Testament would become extremely important and popular throughout Europe, especially among Calvinists. According to many scholars, Beza's interpretation of the text, along with his translation, were extremely helpful to theological scholars who came after him. This 1630 edition includes the Apocrypha and the Old Testament as well as Beza's New Testament. According to Darlow & Moule, this edition is "Tremellius and Junius' version of the Bible, with the addition of Beza's translation of the New Testament. BOURGES, Jacques de.
Scheepers I, 589; Tiele, Bibl. 178; WorldCat (8 copies); cf. Chadenat 532; Cordier, Bibl. Sinica 827. Rare popular account of an overland voyage from France to the Far East, ending in China, by Jacques de Bourges (ca. 1630-1714), a companion of the French titular bishop of Berytus (Beirut), Pierre Lambert de la Motte, on the first expedition to the Far East of the newly erected Société des Mission Etrangères. They left Marseille in June 1660, and travelled via Malta, through the Holy Land, Syria and other parts of the Middle East (Iran & Iraq) and India, to Siam (Thailand). Bourges gives extensive descriptions of the people, their customs and costumes, of the places he visits. The book ends with some notes on the bishop's voyage to China by sea and notes on the return voyage of Bourges to France to report in Rome on the conditions for missionising in Siam. Two years later, in 1666, he published the original edition of the present work, in French, based on the diary he had kept during his adventurous voyage. The present Dutch translation followed in 1669 and the prolific Dutch translator J.H. Glazemaker added descriptions of several cities and countries from his own hand. Some slight staining. Leaf G4 with top of corner cut off, leaf M1 heavily restored with text loss. Good copy of a travel account to the Far East.

"Praetorius had an open eye and a sharp ear for all wonder stories, witch tales, and accounts of ghosts and sorcery current among the people. He indefatigably collected all information on remarkable subjects and happenings, and was fond of popular gossip, even of the uncouth type" (Faber du Faur). It contains texts by scholars such as: Goclenius, Indagine, Pompeius, Vossius and Robert Fludd, gives background on the Roma, and also includes one of the first chirological bibliographies. Blaeu, Willem
FAMOUS MAP OF EUROPE ?Europa recens descripta ? Guilielmo Blaeuw?, copper engraving published by Willem Blaeu in 1630. Coloured by a later hand. Verso: Latin text. Size: 41 x 55,8 cm. This classic map of Europe is done in the carte-a-figures style with vignettes on three sides and with Latin text on verso. Blaeu's carte-a-figures maps were issued separately from 1617, and then used in an atlas in Blaeu's Atlantis Appendix in 1630. The upper frieze has nine bird's-eye views of Amsterdam, Prague, Constantinople, Venice, Rome, Paris, London, Toledo and Lisbon. The side borders contain the costumes of the noblemen and women of ten European nations: English, French, Dutch, Castilian Spanish, Venetians, Germans, Hungarians, Bohemians, Polish, and Ottoman Greeks. The map is embellished with sailing ships, sea monsters, bears in northern Russia, and lions in North Africa and Neptune riding a dolphin and holding his trident. A beautiful map produced at the height of the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking. For European mapmakers their own continent contained few mysteries or secrets by the seventeenth century. However, the mythical island of Frisland still appears between Iceland and Greenland. Blaeu's carte-e-figures maps of the world and the four continents are some of his most desirable. Reduced versions of the set of five wall maps he published in 1608, each example features a border of vignettes of principal cities, as well as depictions of pairs of figures in the national dress of the kingdoms and peoples of each continent. Tobacco was highly desirable and coveted throughout Europe for multiple purposes, and Neander was one of the first to clarify and gather all of its purposes into one important work.
