Pont a Mousson: I. & Gaspard Bernard. Condition: Good. Although the date on the title page looks like 1636, all citations refer to this book as having been published in 1630 and no one makes mention of a 1636 edition, so the final '6' might be a zero with a small stain. 4to, old leather-backed marbled paper-covered boards, pp. (8), 264, collated complete, with engraved title page, 133 mainly in-text engravings, some full page. Good copy, binding appears to be mid-18th C., boards somewhat rubbed and edgeworn, contents good to very good, collated complete, tanning, some spotting and stains, minor dampstains to several pages, mainly to margins, indentation and rust-marks from old paperclips to about 10 leaves, some slight corner rounding, verso of title page has old stamp 'British Museum Sale Duplicate, 1787, more modern bookplate on pastedown. SUAREZ DE FIGUEROA, Christoval
[Attributes: Hard Cover]

BLAEU, Willem Jansz.
[c1630-1674]., Amsterdam. A majestic sea chart from the Dutch "Golden Age" A separately published large engraved chart printed in four sheets, joined, with fine contemporary hand-colour lavishly heightened in gold. The very rare second state (of four) of one of the most important charts published in the seventeenth century, one of the earliest on Mercator's projection, and the first on the projection for North America. Waters: the "earliest printed chart of the Atlantic became immediately the standard chart for navigation to America and the Cape of Good Hope." Campbell says that only "a few examples at most" of each state have survived. The title indicates that the Paskaert was designed to show the area chartered to the West India Company in 1621. Destombes and Gernez suggest that the lack of a privilege on the first state indicates that it was used exclusively by the company and not available to the general public. Schilder locates just two examples of the first state, which has the imprint of Willem Blaeu and the dedicatory cartouche left blank (Koninlijke Bibliotheek, Brussels; Badische Landesbibliothek, Karlsruhe). Burden also locates just two for this second state, with Robijn's imprint added to the dedicatory cartouche (British Library, London; Bibliotheque National, Paris). Robijn must have acquired the plate "at one of the sales of Blaeu's stock in 1674 He must have disposed of the plate fairly quickly as the next state is by Pieter Goos who died in March 1675." This brief period of ownership would explain the great rarity of this second state. The examples located … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

HAJEK (Tadeas) - Manuscrit anonyme]
[Italie, circa 1630-1650].
Germany, [c.1630]. Germany,, [c.1630].. Engraved sundial, parts of upper margin restored, with minor loss to text. A rare horizontal paper sundial. The sundial was the work of Jacob van der Heyden (c. 1580-1636), an engraver and publisher of maps and scientific works in Strasbourg during the first half of the seventeenth century. he is known to have cooperated with such eminent figures as Jacob Bartsch, Isaac II Habrect, Abraham Hogenberg and Eberhard Welper. he engraved an armillary sphere drawn by Welper, and it is entirely plausible that the present sundial was engraved after him. Welper published a treatise on sundials in 1625, the same year in which Heyden printed a small pamphlet, ‘Die gestirnte himmels kugel', on celestial spheres, which contained a plate of globe gores. The latitude and longitude coordinates marked upon the dial (30 degrees e, and 47-49 degrees n) correspond to the surrounds of Strasbourg. The dial is finely engraved with the sun flanked by personifications of autumn and spring. A gnomon would be fixed to a position marked “a”, just below the sun. Hour lines radiate out from this point, with signs of the zodiac and vignettes of the months to the right and left borders; below is a compass flanked by personifications of summer and winter. Surrounding the work is a brief description upon the sundial, in Latin and German. The text to the lower right and left corners states that the dial is to be mounted onto a small wooden block with the four wings of explanatory text pasted to the four sides of the block. We are unable to trace any institutional ex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: 1630. Fine condition for its age. Title: Gregorii Naziareni Opera Orationes I Second Edition Paris, 1630 Book: Folio (14" x 9") What is offered is a stunning volume, measuring just over 14" x 9" and weighing close to 10 pounds. Gregory was one of the three hierarchs, along with John Chrysostom and Basil the Great of the Eastern Orthodox Church. It has five raised bands and gilded embossed titles. There is intricate tooling on both the front and back boards. Gregory of Nazianzus Gregory of Nazianzus (Greek: Γρηγόριος ὁ Ναζιανζηνός Grēgorios ho Nazianzēnos; c. 329 - 390), also as Gregory the Theologian or Gregory Nazianzen, was a 4th-century Archbishop of Constantinople, and theologian. He is widely considered the most accomplished rhetorical stylist of the patristic age. As a classically trained orator and philosopher he infused Hellenism into the early church, establishing the paradigm of Byzantine theologians and church officials. Gregory made a significant impact on the shape of Trinitarian theology among both Greek- and Latin-speaking theologians, and he is remembered as the "Trinitarian Theologian". Much of his theological work continues to influence modern theologians, especially in regard to the relationship among the three Persons of the Trinity. Along with the brothers Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa, he is known as one of the Cappadocian Fathers. Gregory is a saint in both Eastern and Western Christianity. In the Roman Catholic Church he is numbered among the Doctors of the Church; in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches he is r … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Taylor (1578 - 1653) was an English poet who dubbed himself "The Water Poet". He was born in Gloucester. After his waterman apprenticeship he served (1596) in Essex's fleet, and was present at Flores in 1597 and at the siege of Cadiz. He spent much of his life as a Thames waterman, a member of the guild of boatmen that ferried passengers across the River Thames in London, in the days when the London Bridge was the only passage between the banks. He became a member of the ruling oligarchy of the guild, serving as its clerk; it is mainly through his writings that history is familiar with the watermen's disputes of 1641-42, in which an attempt was made to democratize the leadership of the Company. He details the uprisings in the pamphlets Iohn Taylors Manifestation ... and To the Right Honorable Assembly ... (Commons Petition), and in John Taylors Last Voyage and Adventure of 1641. A splendid cartouche shows Neptune astride the Royal Arms holding a ship. The miniature map below the cartouche shows the correct proportion of the island to the coast of the mainland. Further adorned with scale cartouches, coats of arms and compass rose with a fleur-de-lys. The map is superimposed over a map of the Atlantic with the coastlines of Britain, North America and Hispanola showing the location of Bermuda. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 40,4 x 53,1 cm. Price: Euro2.250,- (excl. VAT/BTW)

Engraving, circa 1630, without printing details. Proof before letters, printed on two sheets of contemporary laid paper, joined at the center. In excellent condition. A map of the walled city of Jerusalem showing the Temple, amphitheatre, palace of Solomon, the palace of Herod. Outside walls, in Golgotha with crosses. In the top center, in a large circle, is depicted Jesus on the cross, and on the two sides, standing the Virgin and Mary Magdalene. God the Father, with the typical attri … [Click Below for Full Description]
