Japanese, anon
Japan, 19th century. Japan SchoolPainting of a long-tailed roosterWatercolor on rice paper mounted on board19th century25 " x 30" framedJapanese long-tailed fowl have been breed by the Japanese aristocracy for over 350 years. Depictions of these Japanese roosters began to appear in Japanese art in the 1630s, near the time when Japan closed its ports to outside trade. It is suggested that these roosters were brought to Japan by Dutch traders from Java, which was a Dutch colony, as depictions of long-tailed roosters appear in Dutch art of the same era. Breeding these exotic fowl is a hobby for many today. The symbol of the rooster has some significance in Japanese culture. The use of animal symbol as part of the zodiac, which originated in China, was adopted in Japan in 604. The Asian zodiac is divided into 12 years, each named after an animal: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. People that are born in the same animal year are said to share similar traits. Those born during the year of the rooster are said to be profound thinkers and devoted to their work. This exquisitely detailed Japanese watercolor was most likely created in the 19th century.

John Taylor (1578 - 1653) was an English poet who dubbed himself The Water Poet. He was born in Gloucester. After his waterman apprenticeship he served (1596) in Essex's fleet, and was present at Flores in 1597 and at the siege of Cadiz. He spent much of his life as a Thames waterman, a member of the guild of boatmen that ferried passengers across the River Thames in London, in the days when the London Bridge was the only passage between the banks. He became a member of the ruling oligarchy of the guild, serving as its clerk; it is mainly through his writings that history is familiar with the watermen's disputes of 1641-42, in which an attempt was made to democratize the leadership of the Company. He details the uprisings in the pamphlets Iohn Taylors Manifestation . . . and To the Right Honorable Assembly . . . (Commons Petition), and in John Taylors Last Voyage and Adventure of 1641. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1630. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 14.25" x 19.5". Stunning impression of South America. Many coastal towns are named, while much of the interior of the continent is less detailed. Tierra del Fuego is depicted as a large land mass. Includes several animated vignettes, such as ships sea monsters and indigenous people. Also included is an inset of a birds eye view of Cuzco in Peru. From the "Mercator-Hondius Atlas". Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Minor chipping along top edge and small tear to top right edge. Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.
