Taylor, John
TAYLOR, John. ALL THE WORKS OF JOHN TAYLOR, THE WATER POET. London: Printed by J.B. for James Boler, 1630. Folio. Later blind-stamped, full calf. (xii), 148, (2), 343, (1), 146 pages. First edition. [Pforzheimer, 1006]. A collection of sixty-three works by John Taylor (1578-1653), who referred to himself as the water poet because of his primary occupation as a waterman on the Thames and his earlier naval service. The book has an engraved architectural title page by Thomas Cockson showing Taylor surrounded by nautical instruments and entertaining a passenger. There are also twenty-five full portrait woodcuts of English monarchs, over 150 woodcut heads of notables, as well as other illustrations, tail and head pieces, throughout the text. Many of the works printed here did not survive in their earlier separate forms. This is a very clean copy, uncommon thus. The work was printed by four separate printers and there are a number of pages misnumbered, all detailed in the Pforzheimer catalogue. Lacks pages 197-224 and price reflects omission since this book normally sells well into the $6,000.00 range complete.

Two earlier maps serve as the basis for Mercator's original plate: John White's "Virginia" and Jacques le Moyne's "Florida", as interpreted by Thomas de Bry in 1590 and 1591. Latin text on back. Some staining in margins and verso. Two pin holes in lower margin. Minor discoloration along centerfold. Full original margins. From the Latin edition of "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas). Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.
