Rome: Mascardi, 1630. First Book to Contain Images of Organisms Viewed through the MicroscopeStelluti, Francesco (1577-1652). Persius (34-62 A.D.). Persio tradotto in verso schiolto e dichiarato da Francesco Stelluti Accad. Linceo da Fabriano . . . 4to. [24, including engraved title by Matthaeus Greuter], 218, [20]pp. Text engravings, including full-page image of the parts of a bee observed with the aid of a microscope (p. 52). Rome: Giacomo Mascardi, 1630. 210 x 150 mm. Limp vellum c. 1630, title in ink on spine. Minor dampstains throughout, light toning and occasional foxing, but very good.First Edition of the First Book to Contain Images of Organisms as Viewed through the Microscope. The book?s striking full-page image of a magnified bee (p. 52), showing minute details of the antennae, legs, sting, head and tongue, ?still has the capacity to arouse the wonder of modern experts? (Freedburg, p. 189). On page 127 is a smaller illustration of a magnified grain weevil, including a detail of the tip of the insect?s snout and mandibles. These remarkable scientific images are found, oddly enough, in Francesco Stelluti?s translation of the works of the Latin poet Persius, dedicated to the powerful Cardinal Francesco Barberini in an attempt to gain the Cardinal?s patronage for the Accedemia dei Lincei. The ?Academy of Lynxes,? one of Europe?s first scientific societies, had been founded by Stelluti, Federico Cesi and Johannes Eck in 1603; Stelluti?s edition of Persius was intended for the most part as a means for advertising the Accademia?s activities. ?Whenever he possibly could, … [Click Below for Full Description]

1630. Madrid. Juan Gonzalez. In 8vo (182 mm x 138 mm). 16 ff. + 173 + 16 ff. ?This important work was compiled from original documents? Sabin. Palau no parecerí … [Click Below for Full Description]

Visscher/Gerritsz
[Amsterdam], 1630. Striking view of the naval siege of the Dutch forces on Bahia de Todos los Santos. 1624 [c.1630]. [Amsterdam]. Old folds now flattened, trimmed on left side touching neatline. 382 mm x 212 mm; 192 mm x 378 mm. Of great iconographic value, it gives a detailed view of the city being sieged by Dutch forces, just after it was sacked and taken. Salvador was the centre of the economic power in Portuguese Brazil; this view was reproduced in several editions, often without the title at top, in fact, we have never seen another example of this edition. In late 1623, a force of 26 ships was sent to attack, raid and take Salvador from the Portuguese; the mission was successful, but for a short while, as the next year it was retaken by the Portuguese. This later attack was also successful, again only for a while, as the Dutch went at it again in 1627; the succession of events was well graphically represented by Visscher and Gerritsz [cartographer to the Dutch East and West India Co.]. Although there is a numbered key on the cities important buildings, there is no text underneath. The map shows the city of Salvador under Dutch siege; the city is well represented and is of great iconographic value. An inset map of the Brazilian coast is found on the lower left side. The Portuguese presence in Salvador was long standing, as early as the second half of the 16th century; the city swiftly became one of the most important in the region; in 1624, a strong Dutch invasion put the Low Countries on the map of Brazilian history. Salvador was retaken the year after the invasion by … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1630, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Etching and engraving, 1630 circa, signed at lower right. Example of the first state of two, before the address of Israel Silvestre was added. Magnificent work, rich shades, printed on contemporary laid paper with ?duoble C with Cross of Lorraine?watermark (Lieure 29), trimmed to the platemark, minor repairs perfectly realized, otherwise in good condition.
