LAMBARDE, WILLIAM.
Printed by R. Hodgkinsonne, for D. Pakeman, living at the Rainbow in Fleetstreet, neer the inner Temple Gate. [n.d. but c.1630], London. 8vo. 4.25 x 6.25 inches. xvi + 656 pp. + [24] pp. Because of an irregularity in the placing of the leaves, 2T-2T3 appear at the end instead of between 2S8 and 2U1; however the catchwords correspond and all the leaves called for in the register are present. Bound in original calf with gilt borders; later rebacked with new endpapers; spine in compartments with raised bands with contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt which may be original. Extremities worn and some foxing throughout but still a good crisp copy. Decorated by headpiece vignettes and initials. The rarest of all the editions of the Perambulation. ESTC records only two UK copies, in the British Library and at Cambridge and one in the US. The standard of printing in this edition occasionally leaves something to be desired and it is apparent in the showing through of leaves in the 'a' gathering (dedication and description) where printing has taken place on wet paper. The 'Carde of the Beacons' was omitted although there is a catchword for it on p. 68. The dating of this edition is problematic. Although ESTC, quoting STC suggests 1640, this is given by Smith and Upcott as being the date of the fourth edition; hence this third edition must have been a little earlier and we have therefore placed it around 1630. Vega Carpio, Lope de. (1562 - 1635)

BOTERO, Giovanni
London: John Haviland, 1630. Small quarto, a good copy but bound without the map mentioned on the title-page; contemporary calf, spine and joints wearing, label chipped. "Lately found out, and by our latest Cosmographers" Early English edition of Botero's famous chronicle. Translated into several languages from the original Italian, it was widely read not only by travellers but also by 'the growing number of politicians who believed that geographical knowledge was essential to them' (Robert Shackleton, Modern Language Review, July 1948). This English edition in particular was one of the early compendia of geography to have real social and political impact, and was recognised as a vade mecum of early modern thought on the subject which included practical advice for travellers: to exercise but to avoid tennis, to dance if young, to take water with wine, and to carry few books - or preferably none - so as to avoid trouble with the Inquisition. First published in English as The travellers Breviat in 1601, a succession of later editions incorporated the newest information and revisions. The information relating to America is in the "Sixth Booke. Of America, commonly called West India" (pp. 625-36), and has notes on Columbus, Vespucci and Magellan. There are descriptions of some ten specific regions, including Mexico, Virginia, and "Nova Francia." The last book, entitled "The Seventh Booke. America Magellanica, or Peruana", features a description of South America including the lands beyond the Straits of Darien, and is positively envious of the gold and other minerals … [Click Below for Full Description]

REY, Jean.
One of the rarest autographs in the history of science. The only autograph in private hands from the hand of French physician and chemist Jean Rey, author of Essays de Jean Rey... Sur la recherche de la cause pour laquelle l'estain & le plomb augmentent de poids quand on les calcine (1630). This extraordinarily rare book, of which only a few copies are known, was Rey's only publication; it anticipated by more than one hundred years Lavoisier's discovery that the calcination of metals involves combination with air - a discovery fundamental to the overthrow of the phlogiston theory and the foundation of modern chemistry. Lavoisier published his discovery in 1774; the following year, chemist Pierre Bayen alerted Lavoisier to the existence of Rey's Essays. Lavoisier was so impressed with "the apparent modernity of Rey's ideas" (McKie, p. xl) that he at first believed Rey's work to be a forgery; he later spoke of the work with admiration. In 1777 a second edition of Rey's Essays, edited by Nicolas Gobet, was published in Paris [i.e., the edition being offered together with the autograph document]; this edition - the earliest obtainable - has also become rare (see Duveen). Of this edition Neville writes: "A milestone work in the history of chemistry, describing for the first time that metals gain in weight on calcination (by combining with the then-unknown oxygen of the air). The first edition (Bazas, 1630) is extremely rare: only seven copies are known. Also rare, this second edition [i.e., the offered] contains a new preface and footnotes by the editor, Nic … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE THOU, Jacques Auguste.
Geneva: heirs of Pierre de la Rovière, 1626-1630. Folio, five volumes bound in four, contemporary full vellum; with contemporary annotations to front blank of first volume. Early edition of the influential, and highly controversial, history of Europe by French luminary Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553-1617). A successful lawyer and career diplomat, de Thou remained devoted to the cultivation of the mind throughout his prolific political career. He amassed an impressive personal book collection and in 1593 was appointed director of the Royal Library. Access to such abundant printed and manuscript material, selected with characteristic diligence, allowed de Thou to write a foundational history of Europe spanning the years 1544 to 1607. De Thou was horrified by the unhappy history of religious intolerance and violence that plagued his lifetime, and his history reflects this (especially the treatment of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572). The sections relating to the massacre were deemed too critical of the Holy See, and were accordingly placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609. This is an early printing (the first edition of the first 18 books was published in Paris 1604), and is complete in 138 books here bound in four stately volumes. De Thou, a classicist by training, wrote in Latin during an era of vernacular scholarship and forbade translation of his opus. Numerous editions, in several European languages, appeared throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This Geneva edition includes a detailed life of the author appended to the final volume. Mod … [Click Below for Full Description]
