Good copy, binding appears to be mid-18th C., boards somewhat rubbed and edgeworn, contents good to very good, collated complete, tanning, some spotting and stains, minor dampstains to several pages, mainly to margins, indentation and rust-marks from old paperclips to about 10 leaves, some slight corner rounding, verso of title page has old stamp 'British Museum Sale Duplicate, 1787, more modern bookplate on pastedown. Mercator, Gerhard
Greece: Amsterdam Hondius, Henricus. 1630. Copper engraved map of Crete by Mercator, published b yHondius from "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographia .." Original old colour; Latin text to verso. The map first appears in the second part of Mercator's Atlas in 1589 [Me11]. The map of Crete has 6 smaller maps above of Corfu/Kerkyra; Zante/ Zakinthos; Milos; Nicsia/Naxos; Santorini and Scarpanto/Karpathos with the title in the middle. Good dark impression; light toning; some soiling and light spotting mainly to blank margins ; paper fault to lower right margin with old repair. Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) Originally a student of philosophy came under the influence of Gemma Frisius, the founder of the Belgian school of Geography, and became interested in mathematics - both in the theory and the practical application. With these skills he soon became an expert in land surveying and cartography, as well as a skilled engraver. His first maps were published in 1537 (Palestine), and 1538 (a map of the world), although his main occupation at this time was globe-making. He later moved to Duisburg, in Germany, where he produced his outstanding wall maps of Europe and of Britain. In 1569 he published his masterpiece, the twenty-one-sheet map of the world, constructed on what is now known as Mercator's projection. It was during this period, while teaching cosmography at Duisburg, that Mercator realised the pressing need for a modern collection of maps to supersede the Ptolemaic atlases. This project was gradually expanded to be a complete description of the Universe, both … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Apud Sebastianum Cramoisy, Lutetiae Parisiorum [Parisiis] (Paris) 1630, Petit in-8 (10,2x16cm), relié. - Mention de seconde édition, augmentée de quelques pièces. Reliure en pleine basane brune d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin beige. Un coin émoussé. Bon exemplaire. LAMBARDE, WILLIAM.
Printed by R. Hodgkinsonne, for D. Pakeman, living at the Rainbow in Fleetstreet, neer the inner Temple Gate. [n.d. but c.1630], London. 8vo. 4.25 x 6.25 inches. xvi + 656 pp. + [24] pp. Because of an irregularity in the placing of the leaves, 2T-2T3 appear at the end instead of between 2S8 and 2U1; however the catchwords correspond and all the leaves called for in the register are present. Bound in original calf with gilt borders; later rebacked with new endpapers; spine in compartments with raised bands with contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt which may be original. Extremities worn and some foxing throughout but still a good crisp copy. Decorated by headpiece vignettes and initials. The rarest of all the editions of the Perambulation. ESTC records only two UK copies, in the British Library and at Cambridge and one in the US. The standard of printing in this edition occasionally leaves something to be desired and it is apparent in the showing through of leaves in the 'a' gathering (dedication and description) where printing has taken place on wet paper. The 'Carde of the Beacons' was omitted although there is a catchword for it on p. 68. The dating of this edition is problematic. Although ESTC, quoting STC suggests 1640, this is given by Smith and Upcott as being the date of the fourth edition; hence this third edition must have been a little earlier and we have therefore placed it around 1630.
