ULSTADIUM, Philippum [Philippus Ulstadius].
Caspar Dietzeln und Christoffs von der Heyden, Strassburg / Strasbourg / Straßburg, 1630. Hardcover. Small 8vo. [xvi] + 224 pp. a8 A-O8. Original blanks (not counted in collation) at front and rear. Later pig skin over boards, with paper title label. Fresh endpapers. Decorated head and tail pieces throughout, and numerous delightful woodcuts, mostly of alchemical-type apparatus. Text in German. Philip Ulstadt was a Nürnberg "patricius" who taught medicine at Freyburg "Medicus & philosophus egregius in Academia Friburgensi." His "Coelum philosophorum" was first published in 1528, and subsequently went through a number of editions. It is a treatise on distillation and on the uses of the substances derived from it in the medical and alchemical arts, and is apparently drawn heavily from the works of Joannes de Rupescissa, Ramón Lull, Arnaldus de Villanova and Albertus Magnus. According to Ferguson, the numerous woodcuts "of apparatus, retorts, flasks, receivers, furnaces, &c., &c., are identical with those in the folio editions of Geber, printed by Gruninger in the early part of the sixteenth century." (Ferguson Vol. II, p. 482.) Pages darkened with corners rounded, one small (match-head sized) hole in pp. 41/42 in the margin of illustrations on either side, with no loss save to a couple of letters. Top margin trimmed close to the running heads on a handful of leaves. Neat contemporary owner's name (?) across title page. A few lines of early manuscript notes on verso of final blank. A very good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: Printed by Adam Islip, Joice Norton & Richard Whitakers Large folio (35.5 cm; 14"). [19 of 20] ff., 1630 [i.e., 1634] pp., [24 of 25] ff. (without the initial and final blank leaves).. 1636 When reading Gerard we are wandering in the peace of an Elizabethan garden, with a companion who has => a story for every flower and is full of wise philosophies" (Woodward, p. viii). And indeed, Gerard's herbal is written in "glorious Elizabethan prose, [with] the folk-lore steeping its pages'" (Woodward, p. vii), these factors going a long way towards making it one of the best-known and -loved of the early English herbals. The "herbs" surveyed include plants aquatic and terrestrial, New World and Old, embracing shrubs, plants, and trees, each with a description of its structure and appearance, where it is found (and how it got there), when it is sown and reaped or flowers, its name or names (often with engrossingly exotic etymologies), its "temperature," and its "vertues" or uses (often curious). The story is famous: John Norton, Queen's printer, wished to bring out an English language version of Dodoen's Pemptades of 1583 and hired a certain "Dr. Priest" to do so, but the translator died with the work only partially done. A copy of the manuscript translation made its way into John Gerard's hands and he seized the opportunity, reorganizing the contents, obscuring the previous translator's contribution, incorporating aspects of Rembert and Cruydenboeck's works, and commandeering the result as his own. Gerard abandoned Dodoen's classification, opting for l'Obel's instead, and, in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Drayton "was an extremely prolific writer, producing historical, topographical, and religious verse, as well as odes, sonnets and satires" (Drabble, 292). His highly regarded Heroicall Epistles, featured herein, "present him at his happiest and best" (Pforzheimer 302) and "often rise to a true poetic elegance while some of his odes and lyrics are inspired by noble feeling and virile imagination" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). It presents a Tychonic planetary system, and examines in detail planetary and lunar motion, theories of comets, and presents calculations for planetary distances. It is a highly technical discussion of celestial motion. The next section, comprising six pages, is titled 'Praxes astronomicae', and is also in Latin. This is followed by the final section, which is on the proportional compass, comprising 79 pages. The first pa … [Click Below for Full Description]
