Barclay, John, 1582-1621
Leiden (Lugd. Bat): Ex Officiana Elzeviriana, 1630. 12mo. 690, [6]. The most important of his writings known as "The Argenis" was published originally in the 1621 the year of his death. It was celebrated by Reichelieu, Leibnitz, Grotius, Pople, Disraeli and many literary people for its fine story telling and its wonderful honesty. It was translated into French, Spanish, German and English within the first few years of its appearance. It is a long romance but it skillfully interweaves the leading personages of the era of Henry III of France (and Henry IV) leading up to contemporary events including the Overbury scandal. Since it was royalist in tone and anti-aristocratic and establishing the importance of the state, it was greatly admired by King James who asked Ben Jonson to translate it though the work was destroyed in a fire. Very scarce early edition of a best seller of its age and a tale that was of strong influence to the age of revolution. Bound in full old calf with some loss of calf to head, tail and corners, text clean and bright, binding very sturdy.

CABOT, Vincent
Toulouse, Pierre Bosc, 1630. BACON Francis
1630. First Edition . BACON, Francis. The Elements of the Common Lawes of England. London: John More, 1630. Two volumes bound as one. Small quarto (5-3/4 by 7-1/4 inches), contemporary full blindstamped polished brown calf rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands. red morocco spine label; pp. [24], 104; [8], 84. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $7500.First edition of this important collection of BaconÂ’s maxims of English law—“in the science of the grounds and mysteries of the law, he was exceeded by none”—exceedingly rare in contemporary calf .As Britain's Lord Chancellor, Francis Bacon excelled as ""one of the Makers of English Law. In all the spheres that a lawyer can occupy he was preeminent"" (Reams, 105). Yet the displeasure with which James I viewed his reforms prevented any of Bacon's legal works from being published during his lifetime. Central to this conflict was Bacon's belief ""in a large, modern, centralized nation-state and in a powerful, dominant monarchy. Bacon was against medieval ideas of feudalismÂ… just as much as he was against medieval notions in metaphysicsÂ… Bacon rejected Coke's theory of the supremacy of the common law, preferring to ascribe supremacy to natural law, or to what he went so far as to call reasonÂ… What was needed was the vision of the statesman, and this Bacon himself volunteered to contribute. The statesman was ready to agree that the judges should be honored as lions, but the lions should be 'under the throne.' It was this opinion that recommended him to James I, [yet] Bacon did not succeed in winning James's symp … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHAKESPEARE DRAYTON Michael
1630. DRAYTON, Michael. Poems by Michael Drayton Esquire. Newly Corrected & Augmented. London: Printed by Willi. Stansby for John Smethwicke, (1630). Small octavo, 19th-century full brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $3600.Early edition of collected Poems by Elizabethan poet Michael Drayton, reported to be a friend of Shakespeare, this scarce volume featuring works that “often rise to a true poetic elegance.”Prominent Elizabethan poet Michael Drayton, highly favored in the court of Queen Elizabeth, was a close friend of Ben Jonson, and “there is a tradition that he was a friend of William Shakespeare, supported by a statement of John Ward, once vicar of Stratford-on-Avon, that ‘Shakespear, Drayton and Ben Jonson had a merry meeting, and it seems, drank too hard, for Shakespear died of a feavour there contracted.” Drayton “was an extremely prolific writer, producing historical, topographical, and religious verse, as well as odes, sonnets and satires” (Drabble, 292). His highly regarded Heroicall Epistles, featured herein, “present him at his happiest and best” (Pforzheimer 302) and “often rise to a true poetic elegance… while some of his odes and lyrics are inspired by noble feeling and virile imagination” (Encyclopaedia Britannica). This collection includes Barons Warres, Englands Heroicall Epistles, Legends of Robert, Duke of Normandie and the sonnet series Idea. Containing engraved title page, individual title pages for England’s Heroicall Epistles and Legends of Robert. With woodcut engraved head- and ta … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE THOU, Jacques Auguste.
Geneva: heirs of Pierre de la Rovière, 1626-1630. Folio, five volumes bound in four, contemporary full vellum; with contemporary annotations to front blank of first volume. Early edition of the influential, and highly controversial, history of Europe by French luminary Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553-1617).A successful lawyer and career diplomat, de Thou remained devoted to the cultivation of the mind throughout his prolific political career. He amassed an impressive personal book collection and in 1593 was appointed director of the Royal Library. Access to such abundant printed and manuscript material, selected with characteristic diligence, allowed de Thou to write a foundational history of Europe spanning the years 1544 to 1607.De Thou was horrified by the unhappy history of religious intolerance and violence that plagued his lifetime, and his history reflects this (especially the treatment of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572). The sections relating to the massacre were deemed too critical of the Holy See, and were accordingly placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609.This is an early printing (the first edition of the first 18 books was published in Paris 1604), and is complete in 138 books here bound in four stately volumes. De Thou, a classicist by training, wrote in Latin during an era of vernacular scholarship and forbade translation of his opus. Numerous editions, in several European languages, appeared throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This Geneva edition includes a detailed life of the author appended to the final volume. Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
This Venezuela map by Jansson is based on the cartography of Hessel Gerritsz. It covers the Venezuelan coast of South America, east to the mouth of the Orinoco, and includes the offshore islands from Aruba through Dominica and Tobago. The fine engraving illustrates the mountains, forests, rivers and missions in the interior, but shows place names primarily along the coastlines owing to the relatively few explorations made into the interior. The map is embellished with title and distance scale cartouches, a pair of compass roses and a galleon in the sea. From the Latin edition of the Atlas Major. Copper engraving, contemporary old coloured, two worm holes along the center fold, otherwise in good condition. Amsterdam Amsterdam Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #9830 496 380

BOTERO, Giovanni.
London: John Haviland, 1630. Small quarto, a good copy but bound without the map mentioned on the title-page; contemporary calf, spine and joints wearing, label chipped. Early English edition of Botero's famous chronicle. Translated into several languages from the original Italian, it was widely read not only by travellers but also by 'the growing number of politicians who believed that geographical knowledge was essential to them' (Robert Shackleton, Modern Language Review, July 1948).This English edition in particular was one of the early compendia of geography to have real social and political impact, and was recognised as a vade mecum of early modern thought on the subject which included practical advice for travellers: to exercise but to avoid tennis, to dance if young, to take water with wine, and to carry few books - or preferably none - so as to avoid trouble with the Inquisition.First published in English as The travellers Breviat in 1601, a succession of later editions incorporated the newest information and revisions. The information relating to America is in the "Sixth Booke. Of America, commonly called West India" (pp. 625-36), and has notes on Columbus, Vespucci and Magellan. There are descriptions of some ten specific regions, including Mexico, Virginia, and "Nova Francia."The last book, entitled "The Seventh Booke. America Magellanica, or Peruana", features a description of South America including the lands beyond the Straits of Darien, and is positively envious of the gold and other minerals being gathered there by the Spanish. This section also includes a … [Click Below for Full Description]
