SMITH, Thomas.
Leiden: Lug. Batavorum. Ex officina Elzeviriana. [1630] [xii], 404, [xii]pp, engr. title. 16mo. Internally clean. Contemp. full vellum over boards, spine titled in ink. Various inscriptions in ink on early prelims.Provenance includes shelf marks & deaccession notes of the Scheib Library (1775), 'Sir Thomas Smith 1512-1577 "His book on the Commonwealth of England is esteemed a just account of the English condition as it was in the reign of Elizabeth", J. Granger, vol. 1st, page 147' (quoted from Granger's Biographical History of England, 1769), & ownership inscription of English solicitor and notable antiquary J.H. Markland (James Heywood) dated 1805. Thomas Smith was a scholar and diplomat who gained favour in the courts of Edward VI and Elizabeth I (though he lost all positions during the reign of the Catholic, Mary I). This, his most important book, was written between 1562-65 when he was Elizabeth I's ambassador to France. It was first published posthumously in 1583. Titled De Republica Anglorum: the Manner of Government or Policy of the Realm of England in English, the text describes social institutions, judicial systems, and governmental procedures in Elizabethan England.

Francis Quarles
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets with a separate title page, note to readers and sonnets to p 369. The seventh is Sion's Elegies with a title page, note to the Reader and text through to p 431. There is an Epitaph - Her Epitaph - after the end page of the Elegies. In original full leather binding with raised bands. The binding is worn with split joints and wear to corners, edges and spine. The contents are in good clean condition and appear complete bar the initial title page and any preliminaries before the dediction to King Charles. There is some browning to page edges.

Small hole in p. 689. Contemporary vellum. Number on spine. Signature of Gabriel Grÿß on title page and the dating "Amstelodami 8 junij 1641." in ink. The French original "Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner" was published in 1576 and the first latin edition in 1577. A German translation in 1580. SELLER, John
1630. London: J. Seller. unbound. Miniature map. Copper plate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 4 3/4" x 5 3/4". This charming miniature map of the Kingdoms of Tesset, Darha and Segelomess covers the northwestern part of Africa includes Morocco and parts of modern day Western Sudan, Algeria and Mauritania. Depicts part of the Barbary Coast including the Canary Islands. Incredibly detailed, the map notes several important cities, towns, waterways and beautifully rendered topography. During this time, the Barbary Pirates operated in this area, despite of which Morocco managed to trade sugar, tobacco, gold and leather with France and England. The map is in good condition with minor toning, especially along the edges. John Seller (c. 1630-1697) was an English instrument maker and cartographer and in 1671 he was appointed Hydrographer to the King. Seller instigated the first English maritime atlas, in an effort to compete with the successful Dutch maps at the time. This map is a nice example of his work.

Doddridge, John
Printed by B.A. and T.F. for Iohn Groue ., London. [8],95,[1]pp. Small quarto. Extracted from pamphlet volume. A1 neatly detached, small ink burn mark in fore-margin of A1-2, lower blank fore-corner of A2 torn away, some tanning and modest foxing; a good copy. First edition. This copy exhibits reading (1) of all the variations noted by ESTC. Sir John Doddridge (1555-1628) preceded Francis Bacon as Solicitor-General, and in 1612, was appointed judge of the court of the king's bench. "Dodderidge got to the heart of matters very quickly, and his arguments-as advocate, as judge, and as parliamentarian-had a compelling lucidity. His writings show the same quality: his reading on advowsons, published in 1630 as The Compleat Parson, is marked by its clarity of structure." - DNB. ESTC S109763. STC 6980a.
