PURITANISM. HARRIS, Robert.
Printed by the Assignes of Thomas Man, etc. [i.e. John Haviland], London. 1630 - Early (possibly second) edition. First published in 1618. 12mo. pp. 26. Full plain leather (probably nineteenth century). Robert Harris, 17th century preacher, was a staunch puritan and parliamentarian. During the final decade of the 15th century, the patronage of the rectory of Hanwell, where Harris preached, passed into the hands of the Cope family. Soon the district was noted as a stronghold of Puritan influence. According to Charles Keyser, the church's historian, Samuel's Funeral "was issued in pamphlet form, and was treated as a Bible amongst the early Puritans in Banbury and the neighbourhood.". No copy of this has been preserved in the Church at Hanwell. Later Harris was turned out of Hanwell by royalist troopers who threatened to shoot him, but under the Commonwealth he rose to be Master of Trinity College, Oxford. One of the most important figures in the history of Puritanism, he is best remembered for The Way to True Happiness: 24 Sermons on the Beatitudes. This item is a very rare and important Puritan text: "Be, with Hezekiah, a good Churchman. Repair God's home, and let it never be said that our Churches lie like barns, and that Our Father lets down what Pater Noster set up." STC 12807.Short split at head of spine. The title-page has been professionally repaired at the edges. The page edges are a little chipped and rubbed throughout. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

De Laet, Johannes / Gerritsz, Hessel.
Amsterdam. Excellent condition, fresh paper, original wide margins. 541mm x 460mm; 440mm x 364mm.- Published in the Nieuwe wereldt ofte Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien. Gerritsz was a Dutch cartographer, apprenticed to Blaeu and chosen over him after starting his own business; he gained the appointment of cartographer to the Dutch East -and West- India Company, his are in many cases foundation maps for several regions of the Americas, later used as prototypes by Blaeu & Hondius. Most of his work exists only in manuscript and these maps often are the only Gerritsz maps available to the collector today. Laet (1593 - 1649) was a Dutch geographer and businessman, his overseas trading eventually led him to become a founding director of the Dutch West India Company, a position that enabled him to gain access to updated sources of information, both from the Company's archives and seamen. The map includes Mexico through Costa Rica with considerable detail. The large strapwork cartouche incorporates the title and distance scales and the map is further decorated with a lovely compass rose.

[WOODBLOCK].
For printed images of the 1630 woodcut: John Carter Brown Archive of Early American Images, no. 03472-6 (from 1630 ed.); for the 3 editions that use it: Alden & Landis 630/88, 633/65, 640/111; JCB II, pp. 229, 246, 283; Nissen ZBI 2359 (1630, 1633 & 1640 eds.). An original endgrain boxwood woodblock cut to illustrate an American bison (often called an American buffalo), closely copied from one cut for Johannes de Laet, Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien , 2nd edition, Leiden, Bonaventura & Abraham Elzevier, 1630, p. 249 (book VI, chapter 16). The "West Indies" was interpreted much more broadly than today, so the book covers much of continental America: its comment about the bison places it in "Quivira", probably in Kansas. The present block is a close copy, but is about 15% larger than the 1630 image. Allowing for paper shrinkage it must be about 12% larger than the block used in 1630. It is not cut on the plank but on the endgrain, and the density of the fine-grained wood (roughly estimated at 1.07 g/cm3) suggests it is boxwood. One can also see differences in tiny details, such as the hairs of the tail just below the point where it touches the horizon line.It is often supposed that illustration blocks made from endgrain boxwood were invented by Thomas Bewick in 1768, but many authors have noted that the technique probably predated him by many years, though his work made it famous. The block is in very good condition, with only a small break in the top border. It could be used for printing without difficulty. An endgrain boxwood woodblock, cut by hand to illustrate a bison, co … [Click Below for Full Description]

GERARD (or GERARDE), John
Finely engraved title, woodcut head- & tailpieces, & 2776 woodcuts in the text. 20 p.l. (incl. initial blank & engraved title), 1630, [48] pp., one blank leaf. Thick folio (350 x 210 mm.), cont. calf (well-rebacked by Trevor Lloyd with the original spine laid-down, a few gouges carefully filled-in, corners bruised), panelled in gilt & blind, large gilt device in center of each cover, with initials "W H" on either side. London: A. Islip for J. Norton & R. Whitakers, 1633. First edition of Thomas Johnson's expanded and corrected version of Gerarde's Herball (1st ed.: 1597), the most famous of all English herbals. "Many errors made by Gerard in his text and in the identification of the illustrations were corrected by the apothecary and botanist Thomas Johnson (d. 1644), of London, who prepared an expanded edition of The Herball that first appeared in 1633…Johnson's painstaking revision of Gerard's herbal constituted in itself a valuable contribution to botany and to the art of the printed book. He added the descriptions of many new plants with illustrations, some of them borrowed from the botanical texts published by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp, in this way bringing the total number of engravings to 2,776. Any new passages were carefully marked with special symbols so that the reader could distinguish them from the original text… "The title-page of The Herball is particularly attractive. It was executed by John Payne (1607-1647), one of the most talented engravers of the period…In the upper part of Payne's work we see a luxuriant garden with the goddesses Ceres and Pom … [Click Below for Full Description]

STERBEECK, Franciscus van.
1630. [38], 396 pp.First edition of the earliest Dutch monograph on fungi, by Franciscus van Sterbeeck (1630-1693), a Flemish clergyman, botanist and mycologist. Clusius had done research on fungi at the end of the 16th century, and published the results as part of his Rariorum plantarum historia in 1601. However, Clusius's original manuscript for this part, together with his 87 original drawings, had been lost. Accordingly, the publisher had to use other (and rather inaccurate) illustrations for the 1601 edition. Afterwards, the lost manuscript reappeared, and Sterbeeck used it as a basis for his own work, adding much new material. All species of toadstools and mushrooms are treated in detail, with descriptions of their natural history, as well as their gastronomic and medical properties. The work includes observations on wild growing fruits, nuts, roots, herbs etc. Of special interest are the remarkably fine plates, realistically illustrating a large number of fungi and wild fruits. Lacking the frontispiece and the 10 leaves of the Index at the end. Binding slightly soiled and damaged. The author presented this copy in 1682 to the Capuchin Friars of the monastery at Tervuren near Brussels. A rare and beautiful book.l Myko Libri 2050; Nissen, BBI 1892; Pritzel 8947; Stafleu & Cowan 13.012; cf.
